Argumentative Essay on Death Penalty
The death penalty is a controversial issue that many people have different opinions on. On one side you have people like me that believe people who commit heinous crimes should be put on death penalties. On the other side you have people, especially humanitarians, and relatives of death row inmates protesting death row. I am pro death penalty because there are mass murderers, terrorists, rapists, child molesters, and more that exist in today's world. In my mind, there is no place for such evil and it should be removed accordingly. Why would someone not want the Boston bomber put to death? He killed and injured dozens of innocent people that were simply watching a marathon traditional to Boston. Abolitionists forget that abolishing the death penalty allows people like him to stay alive. This capital offense punishment was started because of the bombing of the Boston marathon by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The two brothers set off two bombs four hours into the race killing three people and wounding over two hundred and sixty people. After a two day man hunt Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with the police and Dzhokhar was arrested and taken in to the police station. Dzhokhar went through a two part trial and ended up getting sentenced to the death penalty. Most people, in fact a larger portion of people were happy with this decision but as usual human right activists came up in large numbers wanting their
I do not support the death penalty mainly because of the imperfections within the system that has caused innocent citizens on death-row to be falsely convicted and executed. No nation is perfect, but this has occurred on more than one occasion. This system needs to be studied and resolved so this does not happen again. In 1984, an innocent man named David Wayne Spence
A society operates around communities of people who work together and do their part to form a functional place to live. Many people benefit from others throughout society without even knowing it. Society functions and benefits from people doing their part to keep our community safe and people benefit from society as well, but there is an exception. Criminals who have committed a crime that has placed them in prison for the rest of their life, without the possibility of parole, will never positively benefit society again, and this is why I feel so strongly about the death penalty being enforced more.
The death penalty, by definition, is the punishment of execution, administered to someone legally convicted of a capital crime. Each state has their own determinates of why someone would be given the death penalty, for example, in Missouri, it is first degree murder, but for Alabama it is intentional murder with 18 aggravating factors.
Since the beginning of time there has always been the question of what to do with someone that has committed a serious offense that has resulted in serious injury or even death to a person. The death penalty has always been a topic of whether it is humane or inhumane to put someone to death over their crimes against another human being. The death penalty to some is either acceptable to where a person should be put t death for their crimes or is not doing anything to deter people from committing crimes. the death penalty is starting to become less of a punishment and more of a costly expense to taxpayers whom for “Each death penalty case in Texas costs taxpayers about $2.3 million.” The death penalty for some think it should be abolished while others would rather see it extended.
Coretta Scott King once said, “Justice is never advanced in the taking of a human life”. I agree with Coretta about bringing justice is not about taking someone's else's life. I am against the death penalty because it is not fair to take someone else's life just to punish them for something that they did wrong. Three reasons why the death penalty is wrong are; death penalty puts innocents lives at risk, we pay many millions for the death penalty system, and race and place determine who lives and dies. First, some people that are in jail are guilty and end up getting the death penalty. However, they kill innocent people who do not deserve to die. In the Amnesty International USA website it states,“Since 1973, 151 people have been released from
Lawful executions have recently made the news due to failed attempts to put convicted prisoners to death which resulted in a slow and painful process. Many people are rethinking their position on the death penalty for that reason and others. All three branches of the United States government are and have been involved in the question of the death penalty. Is it now time for the people to decide whether or not the government can end the federal death penalty? An execution in the state of Oklahoma that went wrong made headlines in newspapers, television, and social media. A convicted prisoner, who was given lethal injection came to and was clearly awake. The prisoner showed signs of extreme pain. The President had always supported the death penalty
Life is sacred. This is an ideal that the majority of people can agree upon to a certain extent. For this reason taking the life of another has always been considered the most deplorable of crimes, one worthy of the harshest available punishment. Thus arises one of the great moral dilemmas of our time. Should taking the life of one who has taken the life of others be considered an available punishment? Is a murderer's life any less sacred than the victim's is? Can capital punishment, the death penalty, execution, legal murder, or whatever a society wishes to call it, be morally justifiable? The underlying question in this issue is if any kind of killing, regardless of reason, can be accepted. In this
Since its earliest inception, society has always had in place some form of public accountability, rules, and in some cases, punishment, in hopes to dissuade would-be offenders from perpetrating any number of offenses. It has been a verdict applied to a variety of crimes ranging from the abandonment of soldiers during periods of war, to that of appalling crimes perpetrated by serial killers. Capital punishment has been characterized by some as brutal, disgusting, abnormal, and unnecessary. (1) While some argue for its continued existence, the judgment of death, according to some, violates the constitutional ban and is an application of cruel and unusual punishment, since it
A man who spent nearly 25 years on death row for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl has been executed in Missouri.
The Death Penalty has a powerful meaning to it; it’s not just a punishment for those criminals who commit a horrific crime. The Death Penalty offers the execution, gas chamber, lethal injection, hanging, and firing squad. The capital punishment is a topic that can cause arguments because some say it helps and some say it cannot help in anyway. The death penalty has saved lives after an execution, but it has caused many issues for families.

The death penalty, or capital punishment, is the execution of an offender that is sentenced to death by a court of law for a criminal offense. This type of punishment for inmates is involved in controversy over whether or not it is an acceptable form of punishment for criminals and also whether or not it is immoral. There are many arguments for both sides of the debate, each making valid points and pointing out the flaws of the opposing position. Many religions are either for or against capital punishment, due to them either being against killing or for it. The controversy surrounding the death penalty laws in the United States is made up of various arguments. Other arguments surrounding the use of the death penalty include whether
According to Deathpenaltyinfo.org, as of July 1st, 2017 there were approximately 2,817 prisoners on death row. CNN.com says that, as of now, the death penalty is only legal in 31 out of the 50 states. Did you know that the average death row inmate will spend roughly 15 years in prison before they meet their final day; nearly a quarter of death row inmates die of natural causes while waiting for execution, and exhausting all of their appeals? How about that in Virginia death row inmates are now able to play games, watch TV, send emails, and have physical contact with visitors along with much more? Death row is for criminals that have committed heinous crimes and have been convicted by 12 unanimous jurors to death. So, why give them that many privileges?
The death Penalty is a very controversial topic to many. Some believe that the death penalty should not only be in place but there should be more executions every year. While others believe that the death penalty is going out of style and it is not serving its purpose of deterring crime as it did before. Although there are many claims supporting both sides still over half of Americans are for capital punishment in some way, but what causes someone to be sentenced to death? According to the article “Against the American System of Capital Punishment” by Jack Greenberg the worst crime is, “a putative killer of one’s parent or child” (Greenberg). What makes this the worst crime? And out of the few executions are these the only people getting
Capital punishment is beneficial to the community. It provides the society with a sense of security. The death penalty contains a positive influence on the future. A heavily debated topic is, “Does capital punishment deter people more than a life sentence to prison?” An explanation on why will be covered later. An issues many people have with capital punishment, is when it is just or not just. This is a topic many stray away from, because it is difficult to decide. Finding the right consequence for an action is difficult. While this paper is for the use of capital punishment, it is clearly not needed for every crime, or even every murder. Overusing capital punishment, such as using it for every murder, will negatively impact the country, and not using it has the same effect.
