Austin Pickett English Vl Honors Gun Control Regulations Strict firearm laws could be the deciding factor of how to remove weapons off the streets, out of the black markets, and more importantly out of criminals’ hands. Gun control is one of the most controversial topics in today’s society in both the U.S. and all around the world. Debates about this issue have dated back to 1791 when it was stated in the second amendment of the Bill of Rights that "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. Since 1791, there have been many issues, debates and proposed regulations which have sparked the enormous controversy over the issue of gun control and violence. Recently, on October 5th, 2017, the U.S. Senate introduced The Background Check Completion Act. Throughout history there has always been many different perspectives and opinions towards this issue that not only affects the activists and participants of heated debates and rallies both for and against strict firearm laws but each and every member of society. The two largest conflicting perspectives continue to be the Republicans and Democrats who have the power to veto or pass stricter laws. According to CNN, a recent study that shows when asked, most Republicans oppose gun control laws, while most Democrats support laws towards gun control. Studies have shown that Republicans main viewpoint on gun control is
The topic of gun control is a a very talked about and subjective topic and has many different opinions and various extremes. First off, gun control can mean anything from having background checks or waiting periods when buying guns to taking away guns completely. Most people agree that background checks are necessary to keep guns out of people with bad intentions hands because a gun itself is a very neutral object and can be used for any amount of good or bad as can any other object. However, it is much easier for a person with bad intent to hurt more people with a gun then say a stick or another neutral object. The danger of a weapon is completely up to the person in control of the weapon.
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution protects individual gun ownership. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution reads, "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Gun ownership is an American tradition older than the country itself and is protected by the Second Amendment; more gun control laws would infringe upon the right to bear arms. Justice Antonin Scalia, LLB, in the June 26, 2008 District of Columbia et al. v. Heller US Supreme Court majority opinion syllabus stated, "The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." The McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010) ruling also stated that the Second Amendment is an individual right. Lawrence Hunter, Chairman of Revolution PAC, stated, "The Founders understood that the right to own and bear laws is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom of religion and the other protections against government encroachments on liberty delineated in the Bill of Rights."
Having stated all of this information, it is imperative to choose what side of the gun control fence you stand on. Are you for gun control, or against it? A lot of the time people decide hastily without looking at both sides of the argument, or doing their own individual research before coming to a logical conclusion. When it comes to discussing how each major political party views this topic, it is often times easy to determine what position you defend or take on the issue because of the party you typically side with. The Democrats for instance often coincide with pro-gun control which not only favors strengthening gun control to reduce violence but also to reauthorize an assault weapons ban and close the gun show loophole that has been prevalent, especially in recent memory. The Republicans on the other hand are considered to tend to be more anti-gun control because of their policy on being able to obtain and store ammunition without registration, they also do not favor frivolous gun lawsuits and no federal gun licensing.
What is gun control? Who is affected by Gun Control? Why should someone care about Gun Control? Imagine going to a concert with your friends and family, you guys are laughing and having a good time when all of sudden someone starts shooting up the place. Are you thinking to yourself that if guns were banned this wouldn't have never happened? Or are you wishing you had a gun to protect everyone from what is happening? Kids can feel safe when going to school and they won’t have to worry about one of their class mates shooting up the school.
The current gun control policies in the United States were implemented to ban gun possession by high-risk groups. They are to restrict the sales, transfers and purchase of guns to criminals, minors and the mentally ill. The laws restrict carrying guns in public areas, enforcing laws such as weapon permits and special licensing. The laws require licensed gun owners to register the weapons before they can be legally owned or possessed. There are restrictions and bans on certain guns on certain hand guns and automatic weaponry. Finally, the gun laws both state and local require a license by the federal government to sell guns.
The issue of gun control is a fiercely debated topic in the world today, but it’s particularly prevalent in the United States. Due to the upsurge of mass shootings and gun violence, many people are questioning whether or not restrictions on gun purchases should be stricter. Despite concerns many people have, the government does have a system in place to help regulate just who can get their hands on a gun. Like every system, it could be improved. Regardless of your stance on the issue, it’s hard to argue against developing a better system for screening applicants.
We are fortunate to live in a country whose Founders valued the critical right to bear arms enough to protect it. They were able to defeat tyranny. In the end, that's what this right is about (Staff 1). The gun control controversy began when many started to die and get harmed due to gun violence. Gun control became a problem because people began questioning the 2nd amendment right, to a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms (Netzley 15). This was told to not be infringed. As a result of the issue, many feel gun regulations need to be tightened. There are two points of views concerning the debate on gun regulations being tightened. Even though some people believe stricter gun regulations will ensure the safety of
Would you ever want to die or have one of your family members die from a gun? I have had friends that experienced a family member dying from guns or firearm suicide. People in the community would feel safer from gun threats and gun violence. More Gun control laws should be enacted in the United States to stop gun violence and firearm suicide.
A gun is a magnet to devastating consequences. The consequences can vary from injuries which result in expensive medical bills, to death. Without a doubt, guns do not provide safety. Reason is because having a gun increases the risk of injury or death, provokes massacres, and medical bills involving guns are plunging the government's funds. Therefore, various authors present facts and statistics about cases with gun violence revealing the high number of casualties and the amount the government is spending in treating patients with gun related injuries in order to invalidate the idea that guns are safe.
Gun control in the US was first mentioned in the 1980’s. As the U.S. weaponry became more advanced and efficient we began to see the need to protect ourselves from the people around us. The right and ability to defend yourself is a right and ability everyone should have, but now we have evolved to the point where we are arming and increasing the danger that people face. The increase of mass shootings has raised the call for legislation to a fevered pitch for the men, women, children killed by insane men and women. There are mentally ill people all over the world, but the U.S. is the one of the only place that arms them efficiently. There are two viewpoints on this issue which is debated greatly across all platforms. Gun control is the belief we should regulate guns and create legislation to that limits access, weapons and ammo and then there's Gun rights advocates, those against any kind of limiting or infringing on the rights of the people. Carter Gregg Lee is a professor in sociology at Bryant University. “The magnification hypothesis is supported when one considers the lethality effect that assault by guns produces. Numerous studies confirm that gunshot wounds are much more likely to result in death than wounds inflicted by a knife. In comparing U.S. violence rates to those of its peer nations, gun control advocates observe that assaults in the United States are more likely to involve guns.” ("Magnification Hypothesis." ) Mr. Carter Lee has created a hypothesis that there is a correlation between gun prevention and homicide rates. As a gun Control advocate, he points his argument toward the actual damage and destruction caused directly by guns. Dr.Evan L Lipkins is an Internist in Glennville Illinois. He states “Creating jobs, teaching values in school, early screening for mental health and helping broken families may be far more important than taking guns away from people.” This is a common argument in Gun control circles. But to state that its a singular problem is completely illogical. While it's true that earlier mental health screenings would definitely be beneficial it won’t eradicate the problem. As long as guns are readily available to anyone who wants them The problem will continue to . People
Although gun control laws are made to prevent violent outcomes, the influence which laws carry are the complete opposite to what one would think. Ever since the ratification of the Second Amendment, the debate on gun control has become a very heated topic. There is one side that believes that guns should be banned in order to stop any future tragedies from occurring. On the other hand, there is another side that believes guns are our cherished right to own and we should be allowed to use them freely. Even though many gun advocates believe that guns should be used in its continued free fashion, there are many tragic events occurring in the US almost everyday, that should lead to the scrutinization of guns.
The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” People interpret the Second Amendment to mean that all people have the right to own guns, but not all people should be able to own them. “In 2007, 385,178 total firearm crimes were committed, including 11,512 murders, 190,514 robberies, and 183,153 aggravated assaults” (Giffords). The United States government must have stronger laws about purchasing guns.
Indeed, the United States has a long tradition of holding guns. The public opinion with guns is deeply based. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017 showed that 48% of the population grew up in armed families; 72% believed that most people should have the right to have
In discussion of gun control, one controversial belief has been that banning certain guns, ammo, and clips will reduce the amount of crime involving guns. On one hand, liberals argue that this will decrease the amount of crimes because there are less guns out there. On the other hand, conservatives contend that this is not true. Some even believe that crime might increase due to this. My own view is that banning these items will have a negative impact on our society, and here is why.
