One major factor, why junk food consumption is so large is because it's cheap. we as humans tend to eat food that's cheaper completely regarding the high percentage of carbs and sugar is it contain. According to an article by TheNew York Times (How the government supports your junk food habit), “Between 1995 and 2010, the government doled out $170 billion in agricultural subsidies to finance the production of these foods, the latter two in part through subsidies on feed grains”.These funded food grains included cops like soybean, corn, wheat, and rice, which were added to 80% of the foods produced nationwide. Actions like these that the government has portrayed has led to higher risk of heart disease to consumers. In fact, an experiment conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health ( Does fast food cause heart disease) Janel Renee states that “ The study found that consuming fast food as little as once a week increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease by 20 percent”.Which consequently leads to
America is known as the fattest country in the world. Is fast food the culprit? According to the article, "F as in Fat 2005," America's obesity rate in 2005 was a whopping 60%. Many people believe that this is due to the increasing popularity in fast food. It is much easier to go through a drive through and pick up a meal than making the food yourself. When eating out, people are more likely to eat more than when they cook. Meals at fast food and restaurants have become popular, in America the size of each meal is significantly bigger than any other country. According to Christina Sarlch, author of “Guess How Many Calories Are In A Typical Fast Food Meal” the amount of calories in a fast food meal is a gouging 1100 calories with a drink .The average number of calories needed for a person is 2000-2500 calories . Split between 3 meals that averages out to 666.67-833.33 calories a meal. Of course not many people follow that suggested calorie intake.
As we all know, fast food has become and still is the enemy to many now days. Food companies can’t afford for one to not buy or even dislike their products. We as consumers have created a food phenomenon that has impacted us all in a negative way. Junk food is convenient, inexpensive, and has basically become an addiction, we as society have created an economy for food that is dominated by big time corporations.
As a pregnant woman, you are alarmed with the well-being and safety of your kid. As such, foods to avoid during pregnancy are important to be followed since whatever you eat affects you, your health, your growing fetus and his health. So, what are some of the foodstuffs to be avoided during pregnancy?
In the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Heart disease is the number one cause of death and cancer is the second, both causes of death are the effects of consuming junk food. Junk food is fast food, snacks, and sugary drinks that have little to no healthy nutrients, such as McDonald's burgers, Pepsi, and Twinkies. Since junk food is mainly sugar and fat, fat tends to accumulate and therefore can create health issues such as diabetes. Due to Junk food, the main source of obesity and other health risks, junk food taxes have been implemented to influence people to change to a healthier lifestyle. Junk food taxes should be increased to increase awareness of the health problems.
The constant consumption of junk food can cause type 2 diabetes. When people eat a lot of junk food they are consuming in excess sugar and fats because this meal is full of it and high in calories, if people eat it constantly they tend to gain a lot of weight because of the amount fat they are putting into their body, this leads to obesity, worst of all nowadays a lot of parents allow their children to consume this kind of food and 15% of children suffer from childhood obesity at a very young age which is a huge factor on getting type 2 diabetes.
It is up to their choice whether they want to change for the better, or not, but we are going to try to make them eat healthier the only choice they have. We may find fast food to be rather convenient for us to consume due to its quick, easy and cheap nature. In America, where fast food restaurants are on every corner, it seems like a no brainer to just stop by and grab a delicious meal. With a lot of scrumptious choices, you may end up being drawn into eating fast food on a daily basis. However, we all know fast food is not the healthiest of all choices, so why do most Americans still choose fast food over the healthier alternative? What many of us don’t think about when it comes to fast food are the after effects. Many of these may result in exorbitant health care expenses as well as many other consequences.Eating fast food can dramatically increase the chances of becoming obese. A whopping 35.7% of American adults develop obesity! Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination shows that two out of three adults as well as one out of three children are considered to be overweight or
Wrong dieting is the leading cause of obesity which means that improving the school diet will reduce the chance of being obese. Obesity has doubled over the past two decades and is expected to keep increasing if something isn’t done about the state of junk food in public schools. Children spend most of their early lives in school so it only makes sense that they are provided healthy and nutritious food. Obesity also has huge long term effects on children and it is beneficial that they receive a good healthy diet as they grow to prevent future health complications. Authors Deborah Lee and Nancy Sprague confirm that “Public health experts and nutritionists know that obese children are likely to grow into obese adults.” (Point: Public Schools 5). Children who are obese at a young age are more likely to become obese and develop long term illnesses like type 2 diabetes and heart failure. The older they get, the harder it is for them to get rid of the excess fat. Another key reason as to why junk food
One of the most common diseases linked to the consumption of junk food is Diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t produce any insulin at all causing sugars in the blood to build up. There are three known types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational which occurs during pregnancy. “I knew that I had
It is quite will known that that fast food is junk food, and daily consumption of junk food will have detrimental affects on one’s health. Junk foods are essentially foods with little or no nutritional value. Add high amounts of sodium, and excess cholesterol, also in addition to all that are high levels of trans and saturated fats. This all leads to
Every year the average American’s health declines. This is a major problem for the sake of the future of our country and future generations. Due to the great range and ease of purchasing inexpensive and delicious fast and junk foods, the health of Americans declines and issues of obesity and many other poor health related-diseases to our health such as diabetes rises. Analyzing data from a survey conducted at Rosemead High School along with the following articles “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables” by Mark Bittman, “Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause” by Jane E. Brody, “No Lunch Left Behind” by Alice Waters & Katrina Heron, and “The Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry. All four articles make it clear that as a country, we must put a great effort to spread awareness about the dangers of what fast and junk foods do to our health. Although not every American’s health is at stake, the majority are at risk, so I believe it should be a priority for all Americans to eat healthier; therefore, our government, school administration, teachers, parents, and children should improve their eating habits by avoiding fast and junk foods.
Fast food will be the death of the future population of the world. In the 21st century, fast food, an American staple, is the face of popular culture. People, globally, enjoy it for the cheap price and good taste, but what many people are unaware of is that fast food contains a multitude of calories. In fact the large calorie context has become such a problem that these multi billion dollar companies need to reduce the calorie content in the food being sold for the health of the customers. Part of the reason behind the high demand of fast food is that it is quick and affordable for the majority of the global population. Unfortunately, most of those consumers are unaware of how many calories that lie within the food they are eating. In a study conducted by Managed Care Outlook, researchers found that most people ranging from teenagers to adults in New England, massively underestimated the calories in the meals ordered. The adults ate meals containing 836 calories and on average assumed the calorie content to be 175 less than the actual meal, with “one-quarter of all participants underestimated the calorie content of their meals by at least 500 calories” (Managed Care Outlook 1). In this particular experiment it was clear that buyers of fast food did not truly understand what they were eating, as the data shows. If consumers are underestimating the calorie context, it is certain that they are ignorant of the complications that arise with frequent of consumption, such as the disastrous health effects. The lack of knowledge the public shares has resulted in the massive consumption of fast food. In fact, Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, reported that “ In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion” (Schlosser, 3). In 30 years, Americans have spent 104 billion dollars more on fast food, in just the United States. Customers have no idea how unhealthy this food is and continue to buy troves of the product. The inexpensive, delicious, convenient food seems to be a worthy investment to those unaware of the calorie context and in accordance with these statistics the money spent on fast food will continue to rise. With the increased purchases of these
Junk food is generally defined as food items that have little nutritional value beyond providing fat or sugar. Junk food often contains highly processed ingredients, such as high fructose corn syrup or excessive amounts of potentially harmful ingredients like salt. People generally eat junk food for its flavor rather than to meet their daily requirements of vitamins, protein, fiber, or other essentials” (Gale, “Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection”).
The most common drawback of junk food is its deleterious effects to the body. Junk food is known as one of the many factors that lead to obesity. Even a tiny amount of junk food can greatly increase one’s calorie intake as they can also slow
It has to be said that there really are very little pros if any in respect of any person particularly that of an athlete who eats junk food on a regular basis although it also comes down to defining junk foods, as some are far worse than others. However, and whilst I find it a little difficult to make an argument in respect of pro’s and con’s of junk food, if there must be a list of any pros then any calories including those of little nutritional value are most certainly better than no calories. Fast / Junk food perhaps also cuts down on preparation time and of course in many cases can be a lot cheaper. For me this is a relatively poor argument for any serious athlete to come forward with if they have serious aspirations to perform to their very best in training and competition.
Junk food, what a lot of people think it is a quick way to get health food, is unhealthy than you may think. In this modern life, almost everyone one knows that fast is not the best choice for you to eat, but that won 't stop us from eating it. There are a lot of things play a factor as to why we are eating junk food. It can be the financial situation is not cover the requirements of life, addiction the fast food, or less time for other. Whatever is the cause might be a lot of times, an individual is not starting given the information he needs to make a good option with junk food.
