Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) social movements is a political ideology and social movement that advocate for the full acceptance of LGBT people in society. There have been historical changes in the United States that has excelled the movement a step closer towards equality. From the repeal of the discriminatory policy, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in 2010, allowing Americans to serve openly without fear or dismissal, to same sex marriage legalized nationwide in 2015, a historic day for gay right, unforgetable progression took place. Despite the great successes, to America’s disfortune, recent political events demonstrates attack on the LGBT community. Specifically, the transgender ban in military participation and new health care implications have demonstrated misconception and discrimination on gender identity through lack of political LGBT representation and lack of LGBT knowledge exhibited in society.
Our honorous military soldiers are national heroes that fight and protect our great land, air and sea. Nonetheless, On July 26, 2017 Trump tweeted: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
This is a dramatic turn from last June in which Former secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that transgender individuals would be able to serve openly in the military. In fact, he even issued guidance for medical care for transgender soldiers, including medical costs covering transitional change. In result, the military recognized not to discharge or deny members based on their gender identity. The full policy was suppose to take effect July 1, 2017. However, at the end of June, Secretary of Defense Jim Marris announced there be a six month delay to review the plan.
