Cosmetics are not a modern invention. Humans have used substances to alter their appearance and accentuate their features for thousands of years. Recently, mineral makeup has been getting more attention in the makeup industry and many companies are joining the trend. There are claims that there are huge benefits to using mineral makeup, such as being safe for acne prone skin, being so soft that it can be slept in and even that it can improve skin. It’s difficult to know whether it’s worth investing in mineral makeup over traditional makeup. This will be addressed in this report.

Chemical Background
In the simplest terms, mineral makeup refers to cosmetics that do not contain harsh chemicals, dyes, parabens, mineral oil and preservatives found in traditional makeup. It is made up of minerals such as iron oxides, talc, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The minerals are then ground and milled or broken into very fine particles to create the makeup (Harris, and Hicks, n.d.). Zinc oxide and titanium oxide are physical sun blockers and are used widely in mineral makeup, as well as sunscreens and other products intended to be beneficial to the skin. Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound with the formula ZnO. It occurs naturally as the mineral zincite, but is mostly produced synthetically to be used as an additive in numerous materials and products (Pubchem. 2005).
