What About The Children? What about the children? A question asked by a surprising few when debating over the morality of same-sex marriage. The debate typically covers equality and justice, but what we should really be talking about is the children. The legal right for a same-sex couple to have a child is something not enough people are talking about. If same sex marriage is legal and they can already have children, then why is it important to discuss? It is important to discuss this topic because people still believe today that a homosexual couple will be insufficient parents when it comes to raising a child. Is the safety of the child compromised when the parents are of the same-sex? I would argue that there is enough scientific evidence to suggest otherwise. Homosexual parenting does not hurt a child in any way, not emotionally, not mentally, and not physically. I implore you to read this with an open mind, and to take this essay seriously. For these are people’s lives and emotions we’re dealing with here. While it’s still important to discuss this issue; not every gay couple has plans to have a child. Around 29 years ago there was a study done by the Census Bureau which added unwed partners, which included gay couples, which provided them with more data than they had before. Not every gay couple that is married, or aspiring to marry, has children, but as time goes on do: approximately 1 in 5 male same-sex couples and 1 in 3 female same-sex couples are raising
Gay marriage is a topic that is so often discussed by those with highly diverse opinions. As some people agree with those of the same sex pursuing marriage, others do not seem to feel the same way. This fact can apply to individuals as well as entire countries. Several of these individuals and countries originally agreed with the subject of gay marriage as others were required to be forced due to the fact that their ban on gay marriage was decided as unconstitutional. Same-sex marriage is a controversial issue in today's world where some choose to agree with the decision of homosexual people and some choose to oppose it, all doing so usually for different reasons.
Are kids at a disadvantage growing up in a household with same sex parents? Do they grow up developmentally delayed, psychosocially impaired, or morally confused? Is the traditional one mother, one father custom the best way to raise our children and does the role of each parent, mother and father, truly have an impact on the way the child holistically is risen to become. These are all questions that most homosexual couples, orphanage/adoption centers, surrogate mothers, egg donors, social workers, and the general lay people think of. It is quite normal for the general public to have concerns about homosexual couples adapting or having children for it was not till recently till that United States and other countries started excepting homosexual couples as the norm. A plethora of studies and research projects have been and are continuing to be conducted by a
The readers of this article could possibly be those who do not accept same-sex couples raising kids. The opposite could be true and the audience might be for gay people who are interested in the development of laws allowing them to marry and raise kids. The author’s position recognizes the controversy behind same-sex couple raising children and the confusion with explaining it to children. However, she believes that people should learn to accept and respect these new developments in our
For five years Bill Flanigan and Robert Daniel lived like a married couple. By going to family reunions together, living together, and deeply loving each other. However, because of their law in their home state California, they were unable to legally wed. Despite this obstacle, they did everything they could to achieve the same legal status as heterosexual couples. They applied for domestic partnerships, they gave each other power of attorney, and they pulled their money. They considered themselves married. One day to a trip to Washington D.C, Robert had a health emergency. He was rushed to the hospital and intensive care unit. After following the ambulance all the way
In today’s world, most of society still does not approve of gay couples being parents for a number of reasons. Some believe that by the parents being gay it will make their children gay too. Others believe that gay couples should not be parents, because the Bible only says that a child should honour their mother and father. However, others think that there is nothing wrong with gay people adopting children and becoming parents. The reasons that gay couples should be more welcomed as parents is that they have more stable relationships than most heterosexual marriages, they offer their kids two full-time parents, and being in a ‘family’ is better than the foster care system.
An important aspect is the entry of the marriage between people of the same sex. This phenomenon began in the Netherlands in 2001 and spread throughout much of northern Europe, generating great controversy and debate not only locally but globally. The controversy surrounding homosexual marriage has been a constant in the panorama of what is considered unfair or discriminatory. In this sense, we have found public opinion divided between extreme defenders of gay equality and staunch opponents of this position. however, equal marriage must be legal in order to promote equality, family stability and freedom of religion.
A research on gay parenting done by Mark Regnerus, interviewed 15,000 people. “Among his findings, published in the journal Social Science Research in July 2012, were that children raised by parents with same-sex romantic relationships fared worse than average on variables ”social, emotional, and relational outcome variables”(Regnerus, Looking at the research on gay parenting).People have had thoughts on whether homosexuals should have custody of a child or let along be able to adopt a child because of the fear of mental effects or physical on a child. I believe that homosexuals should not be able to adopt a child because of emotional stress, it effects religion, and because the child faces different environmental factors.
According to a peer-reviewed study at the University of Melbourne, children raised by same-sex couples are more efficient than the general population on measures of general health and family unity. Several studies have been released in the past decade that proves gay and lesbian couples raise children just as effective and efficient, if not more effective and efficient, as those of heterosexual relations. As a former Washington post editor Ezra Klein said “We should be begging gay couples to adopt children. We should see this as a great boon that gay marriage could bring to kids who need nothing more than two loving parents.”. In America alone, there are over 115,000 children waiting to be adopted. A San Antonio based federal judge stated that the ban on gay marriages “Causes needless stigmatization and humiliation for children raised by the loving same sex couples being targeted.”. Kids which are raised by gay and lesbian couples tend to be more of a target for the bullies. While gay marriage is not accepted, it also gives these kids less stability within their relationship and reliability on their parents. They don’t have the assurance that those of married couples have. Important to realize, if a divorce takes place within the household of a gay couple, the child is not guaranteed to receive child
Gay parents are facing discrimination because of their sexual orientation. Twenty-two states currently allow single gays to adopt and 21 states currently allow gay and lesbian couples to adopt in the U.S. (Mallon, 2007, p. 6). The ability of gay couples to rear a child should not be denied only because they are gay. Homosexuals may be looked down upon by society, but they still are humans and have morals. These morals they possess, may influence a child more than those morals taught to a child with heterosexual parents. All over the world, children suffer in families consisting of alcoholics, drug abusers, and sexual abusers (Powell, 2007, p.1). It is not possible that these environments are safer than what would be provided by homosexual
Same-sex marriage allows marriage between man and man or woman and woman. This is an age old fight between conservatives and democrats. Traditionally marriage has been between man and woman, conservatives hold to this idea, while typically democrats push for marriage equality among genders. People who are pro-legalization argue denying a person marriage from someone is an act of discrimination and creates second class citizens. Though those who are anti-legalization argue the institution should remain between man and woman as per tradition. Pro same sex marriage is the position many people are beginning to adopt as they realize love is love and the gender of the people does not matter. To provide true equality gay marriage needs to be legalized in all countries around the world, which also helps to create a safer environment for those in the LGBT+ community by not being legally discriminated against.
The fight for the legalization of gay marriage is not a new one. Tracing back to the 1960s, one of the first instances of protest was in New York City. Police had been raiding gay bars often, but one day the gay and lesbian people began to fight back. This caused many riots and protest throughout the country. On June 26th, 2015, in a 5 to 4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states. However, even today, same-sex marriage is not fully accepted and supported. While some argue that gay marriage is wrong, there is good reason as to why it should be legal. Marriage is a right that benefits society protected by the U.S. constitution and the acceptance and legalization of same-sex marriage decreases the suicide rates among people.
As the society changing, the history of marriage also changes. Marriage is legally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship, but do those two partners always have to be a man and a woman? Most people believe that homosexuals should be granted equal rights as heterosexual couples. Being as an important social issue, same-sex marriage has become a hot topic of public debates in the recent years. For over the past decade, public support for the same-sex marriage has quickly risen. The United States is one of over twenty countries that allow gay and lesbian couples to wed. I believe that same-sex marriage should be legalized in all countries for several reasons, such as being an issue of equal rights, separation of church and state, no negative effect on the heterosexual communities, increasing in child adoption, and decreasing divorce and suicide rates.
Today in the United States same-sex marriage has only recently become accepted. Same-sex marriages have been a controversy in the United States for decades and in the past few years the three branches of the United States Government, The Legislative, The Executive, and the judicial branch have played their part in making same-sex marriage common and accepted in America. Many people have fought for the right to marry whom they love and now, because of that hard work the people of the United States can be open and happy with their lives without fear of being judged or tormented by their communities.
Marriage is universally acknowledged as a legal contract and a moral issue. Two individuals whom are in love with each other should have open doors to commit with one another. Marriage itself should not be judged on religion, their future family, nor have their rights diminished by the law.
Nowadays, the question of gay marriage is one of the most heated and controversial. Over the years, same-sex couples are fighting for the legal recognition for their marriages and their right as parents. Parenthood is one of the most valuable experiences in a human life. After finding a partner, it is natural for people to want to raise children. Homosexual parent are the same in ability and commitment to raised healthy children. It would be a big step for improvement in our society to provide necessary support and rights for same-sex couples and their children.
