Since the end of World War II in 1945 there have been countless books and movies that use the idea of a possible third world war. But what if one day instead of watching this happen on our TV it was happening outside the windows of thousands of American’s homes? Fears of war and violence grow in the minds of the population every day. Since the attacks on 9/11 and numerous more recent threats, Americans are feeling less safe. The thought of a possible World War III is becoming more and more real by the minute. With the invention of collaborative paradigms the threat of another world war slowly began to fade. However, these paradigms that were thought to be bringing the world closer together could actually be bringing it closer to more bloodshed …show more content…
With the invention of Wikipedia and the internet, research suddenly became much easier. Instead of having to go to the library and search through encyclopedias and books, the answers are available at our fingertips. According to Marshall Poe “Wikipedia has the potential to be the greatest effort in collaborative knowledge gathering the world has ever known, and it may well be the greatest effort in voluntary collaboration of any kind” (349). What makes Wikipedia different is that it is an “open” encyclopedia. This means two things: anyone is allowed to contribute, and all of the content is made available to the public. Wikipedia created a way for people to discuss and share knowledge about certain …show more content…
What’s so remarkable about his computer, is the journey that it took from “conception” to the time it was delivered at his house. The parts used to build Friedman’s computer came from places all over the world, including; China, Tennessee, Ireland, Brazil, Texas, and Malaysia. Friedman writes “I am telling you the story of my notebook to tell a larger story of geopolitics in the flat world… The real subject of this chapter is how these classic geopolitical threats might be moderated or influenced by the new forms of collaboration fostered and demanded by the flat world — particularly supply chaining” (169). Friedman believes that as the world “flattens” or becomes more connected through technology, international relations will change dramatically. He states “What is certain, though, is that as the world flattens, one of the most interesting dramas to watch in international relations will be the interplay between the traditional global threats and the newly emergent global supply chains” (Friedman 169). The interaction between two countries who used to be old-time threats could now change for the better. These two countries who fought in the past could now work together in the future as part of the same global supply
War continues to be a vast topic in not only in the story but, also plays a big role in today’s issues. We hear about war all the time whether it’s through school or social media and it heavily impacts our lives. A main discussion in “Watchmen” there were multiple conversations between people about a possible World War III that could occur. A. Not only do we encounter this topic in stories but we also see them in headlines and new stories. In our country we many issues with war whether it’s terrorist attacks from ISIS or it’s bomb threats from North Korea.
Argumentative Essay Liberal Arts The liberal arts have been a main study for people for many centuries. They have even become a main part of our lives with the humanities relating to religion and how we act. Even though they have been important and still are today, many people think that they should not be a part of college curricula. They think that instead of teaching the liberal arts, colleges should have more of a focus on more practical subjects, such finance and accounting.
Wikipedia is a collaborative resource, which aims to be a compendium of all human knowledge. In a serious examination of Wikipedia as a credible and valid source of information we need to place our argument within a definable framework. As I will show information has many uses, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the use of Wikipedia for scholarly research, the kind, which I will be utilizing throughout the rest of my MBA program. I will be evaluating Wikipedia based on the parameters set forth by Brenda Spatt. The credentials, Impartiality, style/tone, and currency of Wikipedia will all be examined in this paper (Spatt 2011).
Friedman explains the diplomacy of the twenty-first century in the following: "The world has become an increasingly, interwoven place, and today, whether you are a company or a country, your threats and opportunities increasingly derive from who you are connected to" (392). Ever since the invention of such advanced systems, it has indeed become easier to enforce power and priority over individuals and nations of lesser power, and it is now possible to engage in war against powerful rivals to a horrific degree. The consistent and credible threat of a nuclear warfare is not too difficult to uphold, despite the distance or the size of the nation. Friedman also mentions the rise of new superpowers such as the global market thanks to the Internet, an easy accessible network with the entire world. With the global market, any company or individual who utilizes this invention is able to easily manipulate the flow of the economy very similarly to how a nation does. Therefore, the potential of a smaller group of people or even an individual can match that of an entire nation. His closing remark introduces a fate which discourages the presence of security which the United States, a nation which gained its independence and security from other national
“As educators, we are in the business of reducing the dissemination of misinformation,” said Don Wyatt, chair of the department. “Even though Wikipedia may have some value, particularly from the value of leading students to citable sources, it is not itself an appropriate source for citation,” he said.
The Wikipedia is a free, online encyclopedia that lets every individual with Internet connection write and edits its articles. Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger launched their creation in 2001 giving an opportunity to all willing people to work together to develop a common resource of knowledge. Many people have different believes and ideas about Wikipedia, therefore, some tend to think of it as a credible and valid source of information, others strongly disagree. “Since all the books and articles have been chosen for publication, each one has presumably undergone some form of selection and review” (Spatt, 2011, “p.”339-340). Unfortunately, this statement is simply not enough to
It is an age of the online encyclopedia. Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia in today's world, has already changed the way people access information to some extent. The online encyclopedia is not only just the digital edition of traditional encyclopedia but also every user of it can contribute materials (Murgia). This collaborative modification feature of Wikipedia has already been widely accepted by many people. Every month, Wikipedia has more than 18 billion page views on average and nearly 500 million unique visitors. (Anderson, Hitlin and Atkinson). Roughly 75,000 volunteers edit and write articles on Wikipedia every month (Cohen). However, the prosperity of the online encyclopedia has been accompanied with a decline of traditional
When students are doing research on the internet, Wikipedia is usually one of the first site to appear. For students, the site is usually tempting to click, but they are quickly reminded by their teachers that Wikipedia should not be used as a site of knowledge. They label the site as inaccurate, unreliable, and uncreditable. In Boyd’s article she writes that teachers consistently tell students to stay clear of Wikipedia at all cost. Students should not have to see the site as tempting. They should be allowed to use it and embrace the site. Wikipedia has so much educational potential and should not be ignored by teachers. Boyd also writes that some analyses have shown that Wikipedia’s content is just as creditable as, if not more reliable than, more traditional resources.
The site I chose to write about is Wikipedia.com. I chose Wikipedia.com because many people use the site as a guide for new research avenues, which is at the heart of the internet’s origins. The duality of Wikipedia is that while it may aid users in their research projects the content on the site can be added and edited by almost anyone that views the page. This editing ability can lead to erroneous information being passed on to the researcher as if it were fact. While Wikipedia is a great resource for knowledge and ideas, this information must be taken with a grain of salt.
Across the nation and world assisted suicide is an issue that has been gaining attention for several years. With famous cases such as Jack Kevorkian it has become a household term and everyone has an opinion. There are strong cases on both sides, but the bottom line is while it may sound good for the present, it is not for the future. Assisted Suicide should not be legalized in Alabama as the negative outcomes far exceed the positive outcomes in the areas of impact on society, politics and medical education

It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled.
Eventhough, the internet can be helpful with education, it can also be unreliable. However, “The Hive” by Marchall Poe, was the openness of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can use it. This might work for some people specially that ones who attend school or college. This is very helpful for them because in Wikipedia you can search or find anything you would like. Since anyone can write, or delete or use information off of Wikipedia, it makes it less controversial because anyone can put their input into the website. If don’t agree with something, that’s alright because you can add your own opinion. Poe describes how authors of certain wiki pages write with a bias to support their facts. Facts become opinions when feelings and emotions of bias get involved. “Instead of relying on experts to
Badke (2008) begins his article reminding us that Wikipedia although controversial is still the online encyclopedia of choice by 36% of the United States population according to Pew Internet & American Life Project’s findings. (As quoted by Badke, para. 1)
