Since the end of World War II in 1945 there have been countless books and movies that use the idea of a possible third world war. But what if one day instead of watching this happen on our TV it was happening outside the windows of thousands of American’s homes? Fears of war and violence grow in the minds of the population every day. Since the attacks on 9/11 and numerous more recent threats, Americans are feeling less safe. The thought of a possible World War III is becoming more and more real by the minute. With the invention of collaborative paradigms the threat of another world war slowly began to fade. With the invention of Wikipedia and the internet, research suddenly became much easier. Instead of having to go to the library and search through encyclopedias and books, the answers are available at our fingertips. According to Marshall Poe “Wikipedia has the potential to be the greatest effort in collaborative knowledge gathering the world has ever known, and it may well be the greatest effort in voluntary collaboration of any kind” (349). What makes Wikipedia different is that it is an “open” encyclopedia. This means two things: anyone is allowed to contribute, and all of the content is made available to the public. What’s so remarkable about his computer, is the journey that it took from “conception” to the time it was delivered at his house. The parts used to build Friedman’s computer came from places all over the world, including; China, Tennessee, Ireland, Brazil, Texas, and Malaysia. Friedman writes “I am telling you the story of my notebook to tell a larger story of geopolitics in the flat world… The real subject of this chapter is how these classic geopolitical threats might be moderated or influenced by the new forms of collaboration fostered and demanded by the flat world — particularly supply chaining” (169). Friedman believes that as the world “flattens” or becomes more connected through technology, international relations will change dramatically. He states “What is certain, though, is that as the world flattens, one of the most interesting dramas to watch in international relations will be the interplay between the traditional global threats and the newly emergent global supply chains” (Friedman 169). The interaction between two countries who used to be old-time threats could now change for the better. These two countries who fought in the past could now work together in the future as part of the same global supply
