Women have always served in the military. In the American Revolution, they were nurses and cooks, then in World War II they were pilots, drivers, and mechanics too. When women died in the wars, leaders started wondering if women should only be in the military in times of crisis (“How Roles Have Changed for Women in the Military.”). Even though women have served for decades, they have not been in combat for very long. In 2013, Leon Panetta lifted the ban on women in combat positions. Then in 2015, it was decided that all combat positions would be open to women, including special units like Navy SEALs (Silva). There are some who think women should not be given this chance. The two sides of if women should be in combat are very different but both have compelling arguments. The people in favor of women being in combat roles have many reasons but there are three main points. If women are as physically capable of being in certain military positions, they should get the same opportunities as men. If women were still kept away from combat, it could limit the choices for the most qualified person for the job. Women and men can both be trained to succeed in certain roles and if there are women who want to serve, why should they be turned away? One of the reasons are that it is proven that women are not as strong as men. www.livestrong.com states, “According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association, women generally produce about two-thirds the amount of total strength and applied force that men produce” (Williams). Also, if women are serving, there is an increased risk of rape and sexual abuse. Even though men can experience these things, enemies are more willing to torture female prisoners.
