College is the highest education an average high school graduate can undergo but, it costs a lot, so should college be free? College costs a lot of money. If it were free, people wouldn't value it or really care if they were kicked out. Without paying for it, students don't really value it. So, should it be free? College should not be free because, if it was, it could strain public budgets, decrease financial knowledge, and devalue the college experience. If college were free, where would the money come from to pay bills and professors? If college were free, it would strain public budgets even further, leading to shortages rather than increased access (Pethokoukis). The United States would lose a huge amount of money. Public budgets would be strained even further, and cause the loss of more money. According to James Pethokoukis, someone would have to pay for the budgets of the colleges, and with not knowing where it will come from scares people. To make people feel safe with budgets, they need to know where the money would come from. "Free college" would not really be "free" because it would have to be paid for with taxes (Andersen). With "free college" you would need to get money to pay for it, and that money is from taxes. With that being, taxes would rise. According to Ellen Andersen, college is full of learning experiences, one of which is learning how to work with a budget. Learning how to handle finances is a necessity. If you never learn, you won't know how to handle bills and taxes. With college being free, students would not know how to handle their finances (Andersen).
