Argumentative Essay: Should Colleges Be Free?

Higher education through colleges and universities has been going on for hundreds of years and can be dated back to ancient Greece. In the United States, it was long the second option for those wanted more knowledge and a better paying job. In recent years it has become increasingly more expensive, and more necessary to make a living wage. This has raised the question of whether or not college should be free. While current system for college payment is flawed in many ways, eliminating its costs would not solve the problem, and instead, create more.

Over the past few years, President Barack Obama has proposed to make to the first two years of Community College free. Many school and state officials have touched upon this issue. Some officials completely agree with President Obama saying that more students would enroll to community colleges which would increase their chances of obtaining a bachelor’s degree. I, with many others, disagree with this idea. Making Community College free would mean more tax dollars, and making getting an education harder.

According to USA Today, In 2017, the graduating class of colleges will come out with a four year degree and close to $30,000 of debt from student loans (“The Average Student Loan Debt in Every State”). The idea of free college was recently brought up in the 2017 presidential campaign by Bernie Sanders. He made it clear that if he became president, he would use the taxpayers money to make college free. College should be free to attend due to the fact that people who may be smarter than others may not be able to attend college because of their lack of income, U.S. tax dollars could fund tuition payments, and it will help our workforce by adding more people with degrees into it.

One of the many problems with making college free is that college, in time, needs to be paid for by someone or something. With the government having the idea that college should be free, these same people wouldn’t be taking the hard payment; You would, through government taxes. However the growth of a country’s economy over the long run is miles more than the loose in the short term. So in my opinion College should be free for everyone.

College is, no doubt, not an option if someone wants to succeed in this thriving world today. Free tuition would be great, but free tuition would mean the government would have to pay. Instead of students paying for tuition, tax payers would be paying, so technically the federal government does not pay for free tuition. College should not be completely free because college is a privilege not a right, taxes would go up, and previous students would want to be paid back.

Two year community colleges should be free because students debt would be greatly decreased, it would help students in the long run, and the United States economy would rise because we would have more educated people. There are many other people considering this proposal. President Obama for instance is trying to do this. In the State of the Union address, the President brought this issue up. There are also schools in Tennessee who are already wanting to do this. There are many more reasons why community colleges should be free than those listed here. It would be helping students to jobs in America to the American economy.

Current democratic candidate Senator Bernie Sanders has amassed a great deal of support from young people who believe wholeheartedly that he will revolutionize America’s education system by eliminating all college tuition. In today’s competitive society a college education has never been more important, and with the rising costs of college tuition, the pursuit of higher education is becoming increasingly difficult to afford. Statistics from the Institute for College Access and Success indicate that an average of 69% of students graduate with student debt with an average amount of $28,950 per borrower. College tuition is a problem in the U.S. and Sander’s supporters have reason to be angry at the current system. The government making all college tuition free, however, will create more issues than will be solved.

So to the topic were college should be free.some people say it should just stay the same but my opinion to it is that college should be free. With the presidential election later this year, what position do the candidates take and how do their proposals compare? Free college tuition should be provided and funded by the U.S. government because it will help students with the increasing debt and costs to attend college, be beneficial for both individuals and society, and decrease drop-out rates, which is a great investment for the future.

In fact, many US citizens refused to attempt college because of expensive fees tuition and that create lacks of knowledge.
