Teachers are very intelligent most of the time, but could they decide whether or not when to use a firearm? Lately, there has been a debate about whether or not to arm teachers with weapons because of all of the shootings. Teachers shouldn’t be armed because guns can cause serious damage, we need to get rid of guns, not prepare for the use of one, and professionals even fail sometimes. The first reason why teachers shouldn’t be armed is because of what guns can cause. There were 160 school-shootings from 2013 to now and according to passage 1, “These incidents resulted in 54 deaths and 124 non-fatal injuries.” This statistic just backs up the fact that guns are dangerous. It shows how much guns can ‘accomplish’ when used for destruction. In Sandy Hook elementary, there were many deaths and other injuries that still make it one of the deadliest shootings to date. In passage 2, the author states that, “...when 26 people were killed in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.” This proves what guns can do as well. From passage 3, the author states that,” Many handguns can fire when dropped or bumped.” This proves that guns could go off by accident. That means that a dropped weapon could kill anyone near the firearm. Overall, guns are one of the …show more content…
This reason is we just need to stop the use of guns instead of getting ready for it. In passage 3, the Violence Policy Center writes, “The focus should remain on preventing guns from getting into schools, rather than relying on teachers…” This shows how an organization that is against violence is even saying that we need to get rid of firearms instead of using more. In passage 2, the author writes, “Reforms that aim to increase, rather than decrease, the number of firearms.” This proves that the government is just making more firearms that could be stolen and used for a shooting. Teachers may not keep their gun secure because even some professionals can’t keep theirs
One reason why we should have give guns to teachers is because if some shooter comes into a school then we can have some defence against the shooter. One of the examples is why we should give teachers guns is if there is a school that doesn't have a police department for miles then they could defend them self. Another example why they should give guns to teachers is that ABC realized a poll and 42% do think that teachers should have guns with them. So there are some exaples on why we should give guns to teachers. One reason why they shouldn't give teachers guns is that some teachers don't think that they
There are many reasons that teachers should not carry firearms. One reason is that children like to get their hands on absolutely everything, especially children who are younger. Many children love to allow their imaginations to run wild. They like to search for
But that is no reason to arm teachers with gun themselves. Their job is to educate and protect the students, not to shoot another human being. It will lead to more violence in the country, children will be placed in potential danger, and teachers do not have proper military training as it is not part of their job. To begin with, a teacher’s main goal is to teach children of the generation. Not to go through years of military training just to ‘protect’ the students.
Teachers should not be armed if they are not trained properly. Police officers, swat teams, and security guards go through years of training to face a dangerous situation. So why should teachers automatically have the right to carry a gun? Their job is to teach, not guard a school. According to Russ Moore, who is a school principal, “You would be taking people who were
What happens after they find the gun could be deadly if it was loaded and prepared for a shooting. They’re just children. What would happen if a parent or stranger broke into the school knowing they already had guns? Another point for not having teachers carry guns in school is the distraction it causes. Some students could not feel safe in the presence of a firearm.
Personally, I think that teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in school for safety reasons, but many people including President Trump think differently. “Donald Trump has promised action to stop school shootings, suggesting teachers and other school employees could be armed as a movement led by students demanding tougher gun control regulations turned into a nationwide protest”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers would be able arm themselves against the attacker to hopefully stop the incident right away. This way could save many lives and possibly reduce the amounts of school shootings. The shooter would know they could be killed if they step foot in that school with a weapon. “If you had a teacher who was adapt at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers having guns could assure the parents of these children that they will fight back to stop the attacker if they were to enter their classroom. Some states already allow their teachers to carry guns to school, but not many teachers feel comfortable doing so. “ Montana State law allows school boards to let any adult staff member carry a gun in schools. But fewer than one percent of schools in the state with a high number of gun owners actually do so”(opposing viewpoints
Another point for teachers not to have guns is due to the amount of stress they already contain. Every adult has stress, as you read this letter you will have stress present in your life. Teachers, along with being stressed themselves, are around hormonal and anxious young adults all day. They have enough responsibilities already, and many teachers have already proven they will protect their students in the event of a school shooting; So why should we put teachers in the indescribably difficult situation whether to use a lethal weapon on another human being. The choice may seem obvious, but the person who is engaging in violent behavior is still a living human; and the choice won't be so obvious for anyone who has huge amounts of adrenaline running through their veins.
So yes, legally teachers have the right to be armed if their school board agrees with it and certifies. But why would they want to arm them? Yes, to protect our students but there is just so much that would cause issues. Law enforcement only has an 18% accuracy rating when the opposite opponent is firing back according to the RAND Corporation’s evaluation of the New York Police department. It shows that even a highly trained professional law enforcement officer has trouble shooting a suspect in highly stressful
Imagine yourself in school. It is your 7th period class and you are just waiting for the bell to ring to finally go home. The day has been totally ordinary until you and your classmates hear a loud gunshot coming from outside the window. Students are screaming and running frantically around the room. Teachers are rushing around doing all the procedures they learned from past drills. Except this is not a drill. This is real. You and your classmates huddle in the corner. Outside the school you hear more gunshots. Would this situation be different if teachers had guns? The answer is no. Teachers and staff at schools shouldn’t be armed with guns.
There are two main opinions on equipping teachers with firearms. The problem is not with the polarization of these views, but the lack of willingness to compromise. Polarization of two ideas creates an inability to solve the problem. The National Rifle Association’s National School Shield is an uncompromising policy requiring a teacher to carry or possess a firearm (Pérez, 2017). The other side though is
Tragic school shootings have contributed to the topic of teachers carrying concealed weapons. School is suppose to be a safe place for students to learn. Recent talks have suggested that teachers act as frontline defenders. This opinion has brought about debate of whether educators should carry concealed weapons. This paper will argue against the proposition of placing teachers in the role of frontline defenders by establishing the position that students do not support the idea, teachers are not in favor of carrying concealed weapons and the potential for health issues associated with teachers carrying concealed weapons.
“It is something we have to prepare for. As much as we might like to think that will never happen here, it is the kind of attitude that gets people hurt.” Sgt, George Vinson made this statement after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting of 2012. Schools shootings can happen any time, anywhere so we have to be prepared for the worst, instead of acting like it can never happen in our school districts. Many states have already passed laws allowing teachers to carry guns, not in fear that a shooting will occur, but being prepared for the worst to occur (Murphy). Although school shootings do not happen often, teachers armed with guns can make students feel safer during school hours, prevent acts of violence that occur near or at school, and the teacher's right to bear arms to protect themselves and others.
My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time.” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In
Over the past few years fatal shootings have happened at schools around the country. Teachers have been in these shootings and they could 've stopped the shooter if they were carrying. Arming and training teachers with self defense and handguns has become bigger thing over the years. Arming and training teachers can save students lives in the future if there is a school shooter (Henigan).
Every time I ask parents what they think about arming teachers they have a bunch of what if’s! What if the teacher goes crazy and shoots the kids? But statistically there are more students shooting the school then teachers! They say “fighting fire with fire” and by putting guns in the hands of teachers isn’t the answer. I believe the case right now is only the attacker has the fire at this point, and I think we need to put the fire in the hands of the good guys like the teachers and give them a way to protect themselves and their students. I have spoken to teachers and they say if any gun man that goes into their class room wanting to hurt anyone of their students, “they have to go through me first” so most people don’t think but teachers will lay down their lives to protect their students like if they were their own children so we should give them a way to do so.
