The medicated child was an interesting watch. However, I am against children being prescribed medication to control their behavior. Now in some cases that may be the only option but most parents do not seek second opinions or other alternatives to help their child. Also not to mention how this kind of treatment in being abused, because it is not always about the child getting to a better state, but about the check the child’s parent will receive from the government. For example, I have a cousin who allowed her child to be labeled because she wanted a check. On several occasions, I witnessed her saying, “He needed a check.” I honestly did not think anything was wrong with him. In my opinion, he was doing what young kids do and that was having
Percocet is a medication prescribed by medical practitioners to patients to relieve moderate to severe pain. Percocet contains elements of acetaminophen and oxycodone. Oxycodone and acetaminophen are both pain relievers however, oxycodone is considered an opioid. Opioids are considered a Schedule II narcotic. Oxycodone was first established in Germany in 1916 as an alternative to highly addictive pain relievers heroin and morphine. Oxycodone mixed with aspirin created Percodan which was highly addictive. Unable to be used for post operation pain, Percocet was created in 1974. Percocet is twice as strong as morphine. Percocet has been FDA approved and been out on the market since 1976. Within the later part of the century doctors favored the Percocet more because of the influx of coal miners experiencing work related pain. The strenuous work of coal miners created the right environment for abuse and addiction to plant roots. Percocet followed coal miners until it gains traction in other states. At this time Percocet is legal and comes in
On March 6, 1857 the U.S. Supreme Court rule against Dred Scott who was suing for federal citizenship. All nine justices agreed that African Americans who descended from slaves could not enjoy the political community established by the constitution or have the right to federal citizenship. Majority of the justices also agreed that the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which forbid slavery in the part of the Louisiana Purchase north of 36°30′ latitude was unconstitutional. Chief justice Taney stated that individual states may grant citizenship to African Americans but that did not extend their citizenship nationally under the provisions of the Constitution. Taney declared that Scott could not sue in the United States Courts since the courts were reserved
The ethos is a Greek word that means credibility, it is often used in English to demonstrate the strength of the writing or someone. There are four essays that have weakest to strongest ethos that are read; “Kids are Kids-Until They Commit Crimes”, “Startling Findings on the Teenage Brains”, “On Punishment and Teen Killers”, and “Juveniles Don’t Deserve Life Sentence”. Each essay has a different point of view, all but one talks about teens should not get adult punishment for crimes they commit because they are not fully developed like adults. Teens do not have a full concept as adults do when they commit such a horrendous crime. The strongest article with ethos is “Juveniles Don’t Deserve Life Sentences” because she dealt with juvenile criminals: she gives facts and very little feelings when giving information in the article. The weakest article with ethos is “Kids are Kids-Until they commit crimes” because her facts were most likely opinions, she wouldn’t state where she found her research, her essay is confusing, and her article was not actually in an acceptable order; especially how she gives her the information.
According to a many published articles discussing ever increasing cost for college bound students the cost for room and board is exploding. Unfortunately when your child graduates, there’s little to show for those housing dollars. FHA’s “Kiddie Condo” program may allow you to get something back for your money and create a great tax deduction.
The Misfit lived up to the name in which he was called. He believed that society made him the way he was, and they where responsible for his actions. When speaking, the Misfit appears as a well-spoken and polite person. Even when Bailey disrespects his mother, “the Misfit reddened. ‘Lady,’ he said, don’t you get upset. Sometimes a man says things he don’t mean. I don’t reckon he meant to talk to you thataway” (O’Connor 359). That statement shows that the misfit indeed had a decent side to him. The misfit goes on about his up bringing from a child to his current status and personal life, which he also believes helped shaped his demeanor. When the Grandmother suggested that he must have come from fine people, he simply replied, “Finest people
Sixty percent of adults report experiencing abuse or other difficult family circumstances during childhood. (Mental Health Connection, N.D.). This shocking statistic exemplifies the high prevalence of childhood trauma. Furthermore, twenty-six percent of children in the United States will witness or experience a traumatic event before the age of four. (Mental Health Connection, N.D.) Trauma is an extremely common and complex phenomenon. But what is trauma? According to Merriam Webster, trauma is defined as, “a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury.” (Merriam Webster, 2017). Dr. Lenore C. Terr from the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of America further describes trauma as unique to each individual. It can be caused by a series of events or one severe incident. Unfortunately, childhood trauma is usually experienced repeatedly. For example, many children endure sexual abuse, bullying, and severe family problems over and over again. Children may experience a variety of traumas that have lasting consequences on their mental health. Those who experience childhood trauma are more likely to develop psychological disorders. This occurs because their brains lack neuroplasticity, which inhibits their ability to adapt to various stressful circumstances.
Dominique, I enjoyed your post this week, and I agree less-than-lethal weapons are an excellent alternative to deadly force options like firearms. The term non-lethal weapons is outdated among the law enforcement community, because like you stated, when less-than-lethal weapons are deployed there is still a risk of causing death. When the term non-lethal is applied to less-than-lethal weapons, I believe it is confusing for people without any law enforcement background, especially if a less-than-lethal weapon is utilized in a use of force incident that results in a suspect’s death. Additionally, training and education should be used to ensure the correct less-than-lethal option is applied to de-escalate the situation.
The use of prescription drugs has become prevalent in our society for treating mental illness. Television commercial breaks are inundated with ads for prescription medication. If a person seeking help visits a psychiatrist’s office to get help for depression, anxiety, or ADHD, they are likely to get a quick swipe of a pen on a little white prescription pad and be sent on their way. While prescriptions can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of mental illness, they cannot cure the underlying source of the problem. This has been found to be the case for depression. “The effectiveness of antidepressants is being called into question more and more, while the research behind the value of behavioral interventions is growing. A study suggested that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was as effective in preventing relapse in chronic depression as antidepressants” (Walton). Using medication by itself may give people the relief they need in the short-run, but therapy can have lasting results that will improve the person’s quality of life in lasting ways.
The relevant facts to be considered from this case are the following: (1) that the defendant Smith has no criminal record; (2) that he has no record of previous drug use, despite his admission on previous use of marijuana and cocaine; (3) that he has no previous record of undergoing counseling or treatment for substance abuse or mental health; (4) that he was caught in possession of Ecstasy, in amounts enough for two uses; and (5) that he was suspected of being connected with a major Ecstasy ring. These facts are important in determining which laws are violated by the defendant’s acts, as well as the penalties which may be imposed upon him.
It is no secret how a woman's body is highly vulnerable during pregnancy. There are a lot of things she cannot do when she is with child. A pregnant woman cannot consume raw unpasteurized cheeses and meats, certain types of fish, junk food and fast food, and extra vitamins. They are asked to limit their exposure to paint fumes and to strenuous activities. Doctors however are adamant that pregnant women stay away from drinking alcohol.
Are prescription drugs overprescribed? Are patients being prescribed the correct medications that they actually need? Are generic drugs doing the same for the human body that marked up brand name medications are? These are some of the public’s biggest questions that can be easily answered by research. Everyone is affected by medication and healthcare in general today. Many real life scenarios are offered throughout this writing to support the argument. The following thesis statement is a worldwide problem. Unfortunately, the United States has the largest problem with inflation of drug cost and over-prescription of medications. Many people are to blame: drug manufacturers, insurers, prescribers, educators, and many others. A change is needed.
The Great Debate is about the weather or not to keep The Constitution. Which the Anti-Federalists didn’t want around anymore. But The Federalists had believed that somebody had to have some type of power to keep all states in control at once. But it had to be ratified by at least 9/13 states to become a legal. But each side had their own opinions on how the states should be handled.
Only 1% of all cases have the insanity defence, even though it is the most common in the news today. When someone pleads guilty or not guilty to insanity, it means that they think something is mentally wrong with them that made them do it. It’s very important to know people’s history of their life when they plead insanity. They could have been abused, or saw things that made them mad, or they will find out that nothing was ever wrong and he/she will go to jail/prison because he/she is not insane. There is much controversy over this matter and weather it is overused. Some people probably think “Oh I killed someone, let’s just plead insanity so I can go to a mental institution rather than a prison for what I’ve done.” Well, that wouldn’t work

Embodied cognition is a field of study that posits motor experience can relate to gains in conceptual knowledge (Wellsby & Pexman, 2014). The theory shares its roots with early Piaget type of ideas—specifically relating to the sensorimotor stage of development. This stage focuses on the physical interactions an infant has with the world and how the infant understands the world through those interactions (REF). A Piagetian perspective does not answer every question regarding embodied cognition. However, it does start a line of questions surrounding how influential motor experience is on other systems, including the use of language. There is a range of perspectives in embodied cognition, ranging from cognitive skills always stemming from an embodied experience, to the two systems being dichotomous. There is not a lot of support on either end of the spectrum defining the extremes of embodiment, so a middle ground has been proposed (Meteyard, Cuadrado, Bahrami, & Vigliocco, 2012).
