In the middle of the night and while you are sleeping you wake up to broken glass sound. An armed thief broke into your home threating your significant other and child. In that situation or scenario what do you want to find beside your bed or in your nightstand drawer to defend yourself with? Let’s say you are offered three options. A baseball bat, knife or a firearm. I think for most people there is no argument that if you are put in that situation you want to protect your family and of course you would choose the firearm.
You hear people every day emphasizing the importance of gun control questioning if the guns are helpful tool or rather killing machines and how the government should ban the guns. If you think of the matter in a logical and realistic way you would realize that most criminals do not have licenses to carry a weapon, none the less a legal and registered weapon. Actually, I think that the majority of people that would be affected by banning guns are the victims that would have been capable of defending themselves only if they had weapons to do so. Also people who own guns could protect innocents around them

In my opinion if a thief breaks into someone’s house he deserves what comes to him. Let’s put it this way. A while ago a whole family were murdered in their home at night. What would make you feel worse, their killer being shot to death or the murder of another family? The logic of thinking what if I were the one who gets shot when I break into someone’s house is illogical because if you simply put yourself in the dead family place and not a lowlife who got shot during a robbery or a mugging you will understand. I realize that in some states including Texas, a property owner can shoot you for being on his property “trespassing” even if you were just standing on his porch or front door. Of course laws should not be as lean as this because I can see how killers can get away with murders this
Despite the danger guns are in the hands of criminals, the safety they can provide is hard to measure, but diffidently there. Over nine-hundred eighty nine thousand incidences are reported every year where a firearm was used to prevent a crime, including robberies, rapes, and murders (Geneva, 2000). A study was also done on how likely a felon is to commit a crime with even the possibility that someone else might have a firearm. Around forty-percent of criminals admitted to not committing a crime because they believed that a potential victim might have a firearm. Thirty-four percent of criminals have been had an incident where they were shot at, scared off, wounded or even captured by a victim that was armed (Armed and Considered, 1994). These people were not protected by sign of encouragement or Security Theater. They were saved because they had the ability to protect themselves. There was no one else to protect them but they were allowed to be able to ensure their own
How about hunter where would we be without them? Can you imagine not being able to go
One of the main topics concerning gun control is crime rate. Crime rate could increase if guns are banned. It is so easy for criminals to get their hands on guns, whether they are illegal or not. Guns are not the problem in the country, it is the person with the weapon. It does not matter how much the government regulates gun control, they cannot regulate the people. Banning guns will not stop crime rate from going up. The U.S. has an estimated amount of 220+ million guns and machine tools, so criminals can easily make their own weapons (“Will You Be”). The United States will only be in more trouble if guns are banned. Banning guns does not mean criminals will automatically stop what they are doing. Most criminals illegally make and buy their own weapons, anyway. Most of the crimes committed are not with the use of a gun. Many are used with different types of weapons or tools. “Getting rid of guns does not get rid of violence. Some people think that
Only this month, 59 were killed and over 500 people were injured during a country music concert in Vegas in what is now known as the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Last year, 49 were killed and 58 were injured in a gay nightclub in Florida. In 2012, a mass shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School took 27 lives, 20 of them being first graders. The list of these unthinkable and stomach-churning acts is quickly turning endless, forcing us to rethink why we truly have the right to bear arms. Many defend the second amendment by claiming we need this right for self defense, which is the most wretched part. When we look at what we have lost compared to what we have earned in this fight to keep the right to bear arms, this privilege does not seem worth the sacrifice of so many lives. In today’s world, we do not defense through guns but from them. Our policymakers keep trying to reach a compromise by putting in place certain regulations. “Some states require would-be gun owners to fulfill a firearms safety course in order to obtain their license.” “Such training courses, however, even when not required, are very advisable for the would-be gun owner, as they ensure that he or she has all the necessary information on liability issues, on safety, and even on care and maintenance of the gun” ( How to Get a Gun License 1). This lack of attention illustrates that despite the multiple tragedies that have taken place in our nation, some states do not even require a simple safety course that ensures the safety of our people. Furthermore, it is required that one must pass a background check. The questions asked on the test are the following:
Since I was a little girl, I remember hunting season; Dad and Katlyn, my sister, would come home to say they killed a deer. Even though I did not enjoy hunting, I still see how much they love to go; hunting great bonding time for them. My dad taught my sister and me how important gun safety is. He has shown us how to carry a gun properly, never to aim it at anyone, never put our finger on the trigger until ready to shoot, and always leave the safety button on until ready to shoot as well. In my house guns are always hidden or locked up in a safe, only Dad knows the combination, so no intruder can get to them. Guns are a very serious item. I was raised to understand guns are not something to joke around about; if they are in the hands
Self-defense cannot merely be limited to when a person is inside his home, because most violent crimes are committed outside a person’s home. In cases where someone is a victim of violent crime, more than sixty percent of the time it occurs outside the home (O’Shea 611). If it is ruled by the Supreme Court that citizens have the right to bear arms for the purpose of self-defense, then naturally that right must be able to extend itself to outside the home.
According to The Second Amendment of the Constitution, the citizens of the United States have the right to own and bear arms, in order to form a well-regulated militia for the security of the states. This right has been discussed for decades as an important issue for the American society, and it has been one of the most controversial issues in the second half of the twentieth century until nowadays. This right germinated with the threat to freedom that the standing army of professional soldiers brought to the Americans. Some argued that the right to bear arms is mainly concerned with self-defense while others argued that this right was implemented to avoid militia disarmament and protect the Free State. This right was
Taking away guns from a country boy is like taking candy from a kid, it’s just not right! More often than not there are posts on social media about how “Obama is taking my guns.” Furthermore, Obama is not going to take your guns! President Obama talked about creating a stricter, safer environment. This topic often gets people fired up. Have you ever heard someone say that it is their right to own guns? They are referring to the Second Amendment and the Right to Bear Arms.
shootings, when guns are accessible in a home when a domestic dispute occurs, the aggressor is
Police are here to protect us from crimes, but what if they can’t reach us in time? Many people want guns to be taken away because they don’t know the proper handling, and one of the few things they know for certain is that guns hurt people. It is understandable that they should fear the danger of guns, but that doesn’t mean that we should render ourselves undefended from threats, because others don’t know proper safety etiquette. Although many believe guns cause problems, guns prevent many horrible crimes from happening.
In a survey study, it is shown that 48% of people who owns a gun purchased them for their own security (Pew Research Center) and 57% of Americans said that owning firearms was beneficial for them from becoming victims of a crime (Williams). There are responsible owners of guns who used them to protect their loved ones such as Melinda Herman in Loganville, Georgia who protected her two children during a home invasion when she grabbed her handgun and used it protect her son and daughter after a burglar broken into the home (Brumback). Herman was alone with her children and her husband was away from the home and Herman utilized lessons she learned from a firing range session and wounded the burglar in her home with several bullet rounds and the police later arrived and arrested the man after he escaped elsewhere (Brumback). In addition, another case would be that of Ronald Dixon, a Navy veteran with 2 jobs and a father who protected his 2 children and girlfriend in Canarsie, Brooklyn after a man broke into their home during a home invasion (Haberman). Dixon shot and wounded the intruder, who is a thug with a very big record of burglaries and other crimes, and was later arrested at the scene of the crime (Haberman). Not only are guns necessary for home protection, but also in the general public as well. During a
Deciding what college to choose makes this year monumental in my life, but hopefully not as controversial as the March 1789 in our United States of America. The second amendment of The Bill of Rights is the “right to bear arms”, and was passed by Congress in March 1789. After recent tragic events in our country the controversy surrounding the Second Amendment is just as debatable as ever. It reminds me of a Rahm Emanuel quote I learned in Government class, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste.” But with popular conversations, I believe that we should consider the fact that our founding fathers put this in The Bill of Rights for a reason. They should consider that when creating The Bill of Rights they believed that this amendment was
According to Gary Kleck, guns are used for self-defense almost every 13 seconds (Garrett 1). Gary Kleck received his B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1973 and his Ph.D. in Sociology in 1979. He has been with Florida State University’s School of Criminology for his entire career. Since 1976, Kleck has been studying guns and their effect in violence and crime
Being raised in a family of hunters, I have spent my fair share of time around, and using guns. I truly believe that if proper safe handling is taught, and people learn to respect them, that there should not be the issues that we have today. I think that there does in fact need to be laws to protect people, as well as to allow people to own guns. If these laws are properly enforced there should be a decrease in deaths both accidental and on purpose. I do not want to lose my right to bear arms, I think that is a freedom we deserve to keep. But I would also like to see things safer, with less fear of guns being in the wrong hands.
One of the greatest things about being a United States citizen is that we have freedom thanks to the United States Constitution. A lot of people disagree with the amendments in constitution. The biggest issue people have with the United States Constitution is the second amendment, the right to bear arms. West Virginias Constitution also states “A person has the right to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, family, home and state, and for lawful hunting and recreational use.” Because of the crime rate in the past decade people want to ban guns and take away peoples right to bear arms because they think if guns were banned that the crime rate would go down. However, if people lost their rights to bear arms, and
