Elite colleges in California are strenuous to enroll into, even more so if you’re a student of color. Many elite colleges in California are impacted with incoming freshman, that they have to turn to other factors. More specifically the students test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and the life of the student are used to determine which freshman to admit. Today, there are fewer pathways to middle class jobs that result in a push to go to college. Mt. Eden student Marcela Alvarez must be admitted to UC Berkeley because she had an accumulation of advanced or weighted courses.Furthermore, she really stood out in the area of extracurricular activities.

To explain, according the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Berkeley, average incoming freshman scores on the SAT in reading and math average “ 1300-1570” (Berkeley). This average is high, because Cal Berkeley is an elite highly desirous institution. Marcela averaged 1120 on reading and math. However, according to the article “Do ACT and SAT Scores Really Matter?” author Sarah Scheffer describes the importance of a future college student as doing better in college with ‘ good grades and modest testing”(Scheffer) . This data proves that students with a better work ethic shine more than students with smarts. Marcela has proven that she can maintain a steady work flow on top of various extracurricular activities. Alana Bradley has been an exceptional student at Rocky River High School for the past four years. She has maintained a 3.75 grade average during this time. I am Amber Bradshaw, daughter to wonderful parents, younger sister to the bane of my existence, and current student at Rome High School. At Rome High School, I am an active student. The admission requirements for University of Southern California are rigorous, fastidious, and highly competitive. The admission process takes into a consideration of factors. In addition, only 18.02% of student applications are accepted out of 51920 each school year. Surprisingly USC doesn’t have a preferred GPA range for their applicants but, their average GPA is 3.8 (Naviance). Many students who applied to USC were in the top 10% or at least top 20% of their high school class. Thus, concerning SAT scores, the lowest combined score was a 1910 with the highest being a 2225, and lowest combined score for the ACT was a 29 with the highest being 33 (Naviance). Education and learning has been something that has fascinated me from an early age. This fascination has encouraged me to strive for the best. In December 2014, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education published “Rethinking the Admission Process.” This article was written by Frank DiMaria, who takes a look at the research of the former president of the University of Wyoming, Robert Sternberg. DiMaria explains Sternberg’s stance against the current admissions process. Sternberg has research that depicts, “GPA, standardized tests, and essays do not successfully measure the true talent of a college applicant.” He believes that the policies need to change. Sternberg offers an alternative to the current process. Sternberg has been a part of a new admissions policy testing students not just on their memorization and analytical skills, but on their creative, practical, and wisdom-based skills as well. Sternberg’s ideas stem from his experience with disadvantaged youth and their ability to adapt and overcome obstacles. Sternberg claims that students who grow up in the upper middle class tend to have an environment which better values the analytical skills that the current tests measure. He argues that, because of this, colleges may not be getting the most creative and adaptable students. He shows that some of these less privileged students are capable of handling a college workload even though they may not have been able to score as high on the SAT or other tests. National Honor Society recognizes students who attribute remarkably brilliant grades, which I currently believe to respectively possess a cumulative weighted 102% GPA. I have been attending advanced and honor classes tracing from the 7th grade in Benavente Middle School which I fully credit for greatly preparing me for present day high school honors courses. Furthermore, to my academic success, I participated in many scholastic competitions such as Trivia, Spelling Bees, and Essay contests. My grades are one of my top priorities along with my character and attitude that will promote my future after high school.
During grade school, I won many academic awards and was also a member of the academic bowl team. At the graduation ceremony in 8th grade, I received the R. Dean Truesdale award, which recognized students who scored highly academically and exemplified outstanding integrity.
