Elite colleges in California are strenuous to enroll into, even more so if you’re a student of color. Many elite colleges in California are impacted with incoming freshman, that they have to turn to other factors. More specifically the students test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and the life of the student are used to determine which freshman to admit. Today, there are fewer pathways to middle class jobs that result in a push to go to college. Mt. Eden student Marcela Alvarez must be admitted to UC Berkeley because she had an accumulation of advanced or weighted courses.Furthermore, she really stood out in the area of extracurricular activities.

To explain, according the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Berkeley, average incoming freshman scores on the SAT in reading and math average “ 1300-1570” (Berkeley). This average is high, because Cal Berkeley is an elite highly desirous institution. Marcela averaged 1120 on reading and math. However, according to the article “Do ACT and SAT Scores Really Matter?” author Sarah Scheffer describes the importance of a future college student as doing better in college with ‘ good grades and modest testing”(Scheffer) . This data proves that students with a better work ethic shine more than students with smarts. Marcela has proven that she can maintain a steady work flow on top of various extracurricular activities. The University Of California at berkeley Admissions Scattergram, Historical self-reported student data exhibits at chart of students that will apply,or who are denied,waitlisted,or accepted. The chart also shows the GPA and ACT/SAT scores and the outcome of those categories or varied. People with a high GPA are accepted.
