What’s Wrong With America? Kathryn O’Brien Southern Illinois University Edwardsville The land of the free and the home of the brave. Although many other countries are free, America is as the free nation who fights for their people. America does fight for its people, but is willing to fight with anyone who disagrees with it’s ideas, or if another nation has something it wants. This once great nation has taken its rights too far and letting its citizens do whatever they please not only to other nation’s citizens, but to other Americans. With obesity rates rising every year and more suicides from bullying than ever, it’s going to take a long time for the American dream to be realistic again. Clothes size is a big insecurity for many kids in school, and their peers know exactly how to exploit these kinds of insecurities. There is a 63% increase in the chance that if a kid is grossly overweight, they will be bulled by their classmates. Since the most common types of bullying are emotional and cyberbullying, it is very easy to target kids who weigh more, kids who are a part of the LGBT community, and any kid that is different in a way that other children see to be as a hindrance. Rumors and derogatory terms are the biggest ways that the bullies attempt to bring the self-esteem and reputation down of others. 82% of students have been sexually harassed by their fellow classmates at some point. With 1 in 4 students being bullied and the most targeted grades for bullying being between sixth and tenth grade, it’s no shock that America isn’t the great nation it used to be. Most students, up to 85%, don’t receive help from their teachers or other school officials for bullying. Not only that, but 14% of the students who are bullied regularly grow up to have life-changing negative reactions to bullying that creates long-term effects such as anxiety and depression.
