What’s Wrong With America? Kathryn O’Brien Southern Illinois University Edwardsville The land of the free and the home of the brave. Although many other countries are free, America is as the free nation who fights for their people. America does fight for its people, but is willing to fight with anyone who disagrees with it’s ideas, or if another nation has something it wants. This once great nation has taken its rights too far and letting its citizens do whatever they please not only to other nation’s citizens, but to other Americans. With obesity rates rising every year and more suicides from bullying than ever, it’s going to take a long time for the American dream to be realistic again. Looking around, it’s easy to see obesity is overcoming …show more content…
Clothes size is a big insecurity for many kids in school, and their peers know exactly how to exploit these kinds of insecurities. There is a 63% increase in the chance that if a kid is grossly overweight, they will be bulled by their classmates. Since the most common types of bullying are emotional and cyberbullying, it is very easy to target kids who weigh more, kids who are a part of the LGBT community, and any kid that is different in a way that other children see to be as a hindrance. Rumors and derogatory terms are the biggest ways that the bullies attempt to bring the self-esteem and reputation down of others. 82% of students have been sexually harassed by their fellow classmates at some point. With 1 in 4 students being bullied and the most targeted grades for bullying being between sixth and tenth grade, it’s no shock that America isn’t the great nation it used to be. Most students, up to 85%, don’t receive help from their teachers or other school officials for bullying. Not only that, but 14% of the students who are bullied regularly grow up to have life-changing negative reactions to bullying that creates long-term effects such as anxiety and depression. (Bullying in the USA,
“A lot of kids are bullied because of their sexual identity or expression. It's often the effeminate boys and the masculine girls, the ones who violate gender norms and expectations, who get bullied” says Dan Savage. Throughout society, there are expectations for many of the people to achieve, but for many people, these norms can cause people to hide their true selves and become someone they are not. It can also cause unequal treatment to those who do not fit the same picture that society wants. Many individuals are filled with the fear that they will be outcasts in society, this fear can lead to unfortunate consequences and inaccurate judgements.
Is America dead? In my humble opinion, the answer is no. You see America was built upon dreams and ideas and still is, in which were manifested among a small group of men who decided to proclaim a nation in which no one and no religion can be discriminated. This is why the constitution is always up for debate because it's so vague in it's meaning, You and I can have different interpretations on some parts, which then arises an ideology in which you firmly believe and I firmly believe in, this key factor here is what makes democracy so great. America will be this way, there is no one man or group who will change it as long as there are people willing to voice there opinions and ideas, free speech is the greatest
America is a country that prides itself on being the best country I the world no matter how they have to do it. I do believe that America is considered a, “light upon a hill” for the world but I do not believe that God is happy with America. I believe it is because America provides more opportunity to the people, at least more than any other country and most of us believe in freedom. God would not be happy with America because of how we achieved the land and how we go about our lives. Yes we promote freedom but are everyone completely free. No. Everyone is not considered equal nor treated that way and God believes that we are all brothers and sisters. I do believe being put on this world is a test and as people as a whole we have failed. America
You’ve reached your destination, you’re “Here”. Welcome to the “New Americana”! It’s been a hot topic for discussion on the demographic and ideologies that compose our generation. My claim won’t just address the misconceptions about the current generation but also what our modern day America stands for. At first glance, American’s are associated as obese, in-debt, lazy, drug and sex crazed, while unprepared for life’s realities. As ignorant as the following statement sounds, it features common fallacies in our everyday life. The modern day America stands for young adults, who are smoking marijuana, living a party lifestyle, and recklessly drinking their lives into gay and inter-racial relationships. It’s time to set the record straight. The
I think one can think that maybe today is the modern western. The law enforcement is trying to enforce laws, like the old west, but you just can’t shot first and ask question later. Some cities are like the old west, and even today we have cowboys in the law enforcement. Instead of horses, they have cars. Coming from a criminal justice background, one would have to think. Some places are lawless. Take Asbury Park, where there is always shooting there. Just like the Wild West, people are riding cars, and shooting up building. The man and women in uniform try their best to fight crime. I feel still today, some places are lawless, just because times change, doesn’t me crime changes. Crime only adepts to the times as well. In the west, they still
Staff, I just wanted to close the loop on our conversation yesterday and have finished my investigation into this complaint having spoken to James and Wendy this morning.
Moreover, Mr. Jackson said he drove about a mile up the road, and the man said it is the next turn on your right. When Mr. Jackson went to make his turn, he failed to use his turn signal. A cop who was traveling behind him pulled his blue lights on and pulled him over. The cop walks up to the car and says to Mr. Jackson, “you fail to use your right turn signal.” Then Mr. Jackson said the cop asked him for his driving license, insurance, and registration. Mr. Jackson gave him all the documents he had asked for.
Justice has been served for the family of Laquan McDonald as former Chicago policeman Jason Van Dyke was finally charged with first degree murder more than a year after shooting the 17-year-old 16 times, but this was not the first wrongdoing of a police officer as there has been hundreds of cases where the death of an innocent black man was caused by excessive force.
In the world we live in millions of young girls and boys are bullied for the color of their skin and the size and shape of their bodies. When children are put down their self esteem is often put on the line which can cause many issues within one 's childhood (KidsHealth.org). It has become a cultural norm for adolescents to feel some sort of hate toward themselves and their own bodies because of what someone has said to them or something they read in a tabloid magazine about how a “beautiful” person should look like. Young people have lost their sense of confidence due to other people 's opinions and it is causing immense amounts of mental and physical damage to them. The direct relation to bullying and body image have been studied many times and every time you can find some sort of connection.
In 1958, Edward Lewis Schempp, his wife and two kids, who attend a Pennsylvania public school, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. district court, claiming their religious rights was violated by state law. The law made public schools read at least ten passages, from the Bible, at the beginning of everyday. According to Britannica “The Schempps, who were Unitarians, claimed that the law was an unconstitutional establishment of religion and that it interfered with the free exercise of their religious faith, in violation of the First Amendment’s free-exercise clause.”(Stephen R. McCullough). They asked to get rid of the school district’s requirement that students recite the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of each school day. The only time a student could
Whether it was being a bystander from afar or laughing along to someone getting bullied, everyone has witnessed some sort of bullying occur. This happens on a daily basis where bullying is associated with intentional hostile behaviors to attack a weaker individual (Wenos, Trick, & Williams, 2014). The physical education environment magnifies bullying based on weight bias and poor motor skills. Bullying takes a toll on the bullies themselves and its victims, but there are means of
Good Afternoon, the reason for this letter is to appeal the decision of me being denied unemployment benefits. The reasons stated for my termination were incorrect and false. The decision made by Unemployment Insurance was based off incorrect information.
People bully others about their looks, what they like, and how they do things. These people are categorized as different and the bullying can affect them later in their lifetime. Bullying people about their self-image only brings them to think that they have a bad self-image and they are flawed. Instead of teaching each other to hate one another or they way we look, we should be teaching them that everyone is different for a reason.Everyone should know that they are not alone and being unique is special. Bullying during adolescence may be tied to health problems that follow teens into adulthood, a Canadian study suggests. “Researchers who followed 662 youth for a decade starting when they were between 12 and 19 years old found that both physical and emotional bullying was linked
Bullying comes in many forms including: sexual harassment and emotional and physical abuse. Sexual harassment has been determined as one of the underlying problems in regards to children’s performance in an educational setting. In an article by Deborah Smith, Smith recalls a story about Katy, a 15 year old girl, who was harassed by boys at her school. Her classmates had written derogatory statements about her in the boy’s bathroom stalls. Despite efforts made by herself and her parents, the principal did not remove the graffiti, and simply told Katy that no one reads it, anyhow and that it would make her a strong person. (Smith, n.d.) Sexual harassment should not be tolerated anywhere, and especially not in a school setting. According to a report released by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), on average, about 80 percent of adolescent boys and girls report being sexually harassed by their peers. (Smith, n.d.) The report also found that girls are more likely to report feeling self-conscious, embarrassed, and less confident because of the harassment. Girls are also more likely to not participate in class to avoid further harassment. (Smith, n.d.)
During this course I have learned there is in fact a great deal to writing. Throughout my lifetime I have had to write numerous amounts of essays and papers for various subjects, all requiring different styles and techniques. Before engulfing myself into the writing process I would try and think of whom I am writing to and what I am writing about. I always just assumed I was writing for my audience, that being my teacher. Writing an argumentative research paper is something I had yet to accomplish in my college career. Not only was it thought provoking but this paper challenged me in many ways, such as, knowing who I should be directing throughout the essay to as well as the simple steps of organizing my thoughts and ideas. Also, simply reflecting on what information needs to be apart of the essay and what doesn’t.
