Alcohol Consumption became a sudden issue in my life as I entered college because I became surrounded with people’s mixed views on the issue and ironically my life became more in danger as I was surrounded by more young drunk drivers. I’m sure we all are well informed with the United States concern with alcohol since there are two amendments dedicated to it but that did not stop the conversation because the issue of alcohol-related traffic deaths amongst younger drivers became a growing problem. Fell sides with the stance that the federal government should have power over setting the drinking age in the United States. He brought up one good point that technically states have the choice to set its own drinking age, but the chance of losing 10 percent of their highway fund is something that is not up for a bargain. The federal government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act (MLDA) which basically specify that any state whose drinking age is below twenty-one would lose 10 percent of their annual federal highway grant. Since highways cross state borders and are built with federal funds, the federal government felt the need to ensure that blood borders (a state with a higher drinking age bordering a state with a lower one) don't make a comeback and bring back the high fatality rate that comes along with it. The act itself comes with many exemptions that allowed states flexibility to the law and allowed parents to teach their kids proper alcohol consumption in their own homes. Also, from the maps provided, it seemed like the majority of the states seem to have agreed with the age limit being set at twenty-one because thirty-five states adopted that law. It appears that the only reason it changed was because the 26th amendment lowered the voting age to 18 so states followed suit perhaps to go along with the mindset of the time “if I am old enough to vote and go to war, then I am old enough to
