Animal Research is another name for animal testing, where an estimated twenty-six (26) million animals are being tested on for medical, commercial, and biomedical purposes. Many people stand behind the use of animals, as it furthers scientific research. “The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals” (). They increase functionality as certain animals, such as chimpanzees who share 99% of their DNA with humans, are genetically similar to humans (); making it “acceptable” to test on animals, as researching on humans is unethical. Research on animals has been around for at least 500 BC, but does all of this reasoning justify animal testing?

Reasoning as to why animals should not be tested on is that animal research is unnecessary. In vitro, or in glass, testing human cells are used in a petri dish; this process is more accurate as human cells are being used rather than animal cells (). As a matter of fact, there are numerous other alternatives to animal research. Microdosing is a method where a small dosage is given to voluntary humans, testing their blood for effect. Due to the small dosage, there is little chance of a large …show more content…

Ninety-four (94) percentages of drug test fail on humans, even after having successful results on animals testing. “According to neurologist Aysha Akhtar, MD, MPH, over 100 stroke drugs that were effective when tested on animals have failed in humans” (). Similarly, over eighty-five HIV vaccines worked horribly on humans, when they have worked effectively on other primates during the testing. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) conducted a study in 2013 and found that one-hundred-fifty (150) clinical test has failed, despite the animal testing having a beneficial result
