The truth is that people kill people, and a gun is just a gun that is used by people as a weapon. A gunshot involves movement and action to pull that trigger. When people say that gun control is good because guns are only made to kill, then why do they not question the people who pull that gun’s trigger. What would happen if instead of guns being banned, criminals were banned since they are the ones who commit the crimes? People who support gun control might say that gun control can help lower deaths, lower crimes, and most importantly save the innocent children and families. This, however, is false because gun control does not “save” or “protect” anyone, in fact, it might only end up harming people. Places that do not have gun control are
More background checks and laws need to be made in order to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. In cities that already have tough regulations, there is still an issue with residents getting firearms from elsewhere. This is proven by Tucker (2016) when she says, “Gun rights advocates note that Chicago already has tough firearms regulations, but that doesn't prevent nearby jurisdictions from selling weapons to Chicago residents.” (p. 2). USA Today (2017) reported as well that, “As for federal gun laws, mental illness disqualifies people from buying or possessing a gun only after they've been involuntarily committed by a court.” (p. 2). This does not make society any safer because the laws that prevent mentally ill civilians from
Countless opinions have been broadcasted on national news media regarding what society ought to do about gun control. This controversial topic sparks many heated debates with people of either position reluctant to compromise. Gun supporters claim that the proposed gun laws infringe on their constitutional right to bear arms. Conversely, others believe that restricted gun access would cause gun violence to decrease. Regardless of what side one stands on, with the increase in gun violence, it is safe to say that something must be done.
Recent incidents of gun violence have brought a new group of supporters against gun violence. Increasing support from the young people has significantly strengthened the gun control movement. For instance, thousands of students participated in a demonstration after the Parkland shooting, and this was one of the largest demonstrations by students in the US history (Holpuch, 2018). The students’ demonstration included a memorial for the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting. The youth-led campaign has been creating pressure for the government to act. According to Szekely (2018), the students’ participation in the demonstration against the killing of their fellows “has chipped away at legislative gridlock on the issue.”
Original: A study shows that “46% of gun owners report that their primary reason for owning a firearm is for protection against criminal victimization” (Wallace 158). This statistic is one main reason why gun control should be limited. If America were to take away the right to bear arms, nearly half of all people who own guns would lose their sense of security in their own home, town, and country. Esposito and Finley quote a policer office from 2013 saying “simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option” (86). This isn’t because the police force doesn’t do their job well, but because criminals in the twenty first century are merciless and don’t allow time for cops to come save the day.
James Mallon once said that “Gun control is like the annoying family member you hate to see. No matter how much you disdain seeing them or talking to them, eventually a climatic event, family reunion, or holiday forces you to have interaction with them.” Gun control may be that elephant in the room given all the recent tragic events involving firearm use, but ignoring that elephant is no solution. Stricter gun laws, as well as other forms of gun control may be the final viable resort to ending the onslaught that are mass shootings.
The average response time of a 911 call is 10 minutes. The response time of a .357 magnum is 1400 feet per second. The second amendment of the United States Constitution states, “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon.” That right is now more than ever in jeopardy and we must continue to fight for it. Gun Control does not solve our nations problem of violence.
There has been an ongoing debate on whether gun control laws should be passed or banished. Citizens throughout America have multiple different reasoning behind the laws of gun control, or no gun control. I personally do not have an opinion on this matter, and was very intrigued when reading about the different point of views. There were two completely different articles I read, one was opposing gun control and the other was pro gun control. E.J. Dionne Jr.’s article “How America can free it’s self from guns” published by The Washington Post was pro gun control, he expresses what actions should occur to prevent the number of suicides, homicides, and accidental deaths from occurring. E.J. Dionne Jr. gives lots of real life situations that have
It was a beautiful Sunday morning of March 6, 1915 in Brunswick Georgia, where kids were outside playing and residents were strolling along the busy streets of local businesses, but the inevitable happened when a 59 year old named Monroe Phillips went into a building with an automatic shotgun and opened fire killing six people and wounding 32. 84 years later and Seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado opened fire at about 11:OO a.m on April 20, 1999 on a planned attack and killed 12 students and wounded more than 20 others. Soon after the pair committed suicide in the school’s library at 12:00 p.m. A decade didn't even pass by when Adam Lanza killed his mother in her own home on December 14, 2012,
“Any society that will give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both ”. This Benjamin Franklin quote is saying that we should not give up a constitutional right for security that won’t even come, and could be directed towards gun control. The circumstances and end results of the demonstration are the subject in this paper.
One of the hot topics in society is the argument of gun control. Gun control is defined as the regulation of the purchase and ownership of firearms in an effort to reduce criminal or unsafe use. ("Gun Control" 1p. 1)These regulations include registration of firearms, banning the possession of firearms by minors, felons, the mentally ill, and people convicted of domestic violence; criminal background checks or specified waiting periods for gun purchases; limit weapon purchases at one certain time, or impose outright bans on the sale or possession of certain types of guns. ("Gun Control" 1p. 1) Even with these numerous restrictions on guns there are still roughly thirty thousand people killed with guns every year. Guns are responsible for 3.3
Some people are petrified of guns because they’ve been habituated to believe they are possessed of evil, and can only do evil. Choosing life by taking another’s may seem like a conflict or insincerity to the morally confused, but that is frequently the choice we are given in the endless crash of good and evil. We must meet evil with an overwhelming show of righteous force. The sociopathic actions are accomplish by people who reproduce the culture of devaluation which tolerance has brought us. The very first step is acknowledging that the root cause of all this killing is Terrorism, not easy access to guns, but the racist, powerful, supremacist ideology of Islam. The number of shooting death has risen proportionately in the past years. It is not a proper standard to
“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of it’s own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, it can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.” (Jeff Cooper, Art of the Rifle) Placing restrictions on guns is causing more violence in the United States. Americans purchase these weapons as protection for themselves and their families. Gun control will not prevent hate crimes or terrorist attacks. With that being said, how are these terrorist being equipped with such powerful weapons when they enter the states? How easy is it to obtain any firearm in the United
Actually, guns should be controlled because of mass shooting. Some people might forgets what happened in some cities in the United States related to weapons. A recent event is the tragedy when a man killed nine people during a prayer meeting in the African American church in Charleston. He committed the deadliest attack on a place of worship in the United States in 24 years (Horwitz, du Lac, Bever and Costa, 2015). Furthermore, in Connecticut, there was a sad tragedy when a guy shot 20 children and other people at Sandy Hook Elementary school. Before he committed this horrible atrocity, he killed his mother who had firearms in her home. That illustrate having a guns at home is harmful even just for hunting (Stoller, 2013).
In his article “Trust the people: the case against Gun Control.” David B. Kopel(1988) says that we should control guns by applying laws and policies that affect on the owner to reduce the crimes and violence because it is like forbidding alcohol to lowest the number of driving accidents due to drinking. The reasons that the author is talking about is banning guns to reduce crimes and enforcing gun bans.
Friends, family or acquaintances are perished everyday due to ruthless killers. What interested me the most about this article is how a "mother" can get the courage to kill her own daughters. This is shocking to me because the woman just killed her daughters like it was nothing, she forgot that she carried them for 9 months and raised them to be the best that they could. The recent controversy on gun laws have also intrigued me to read this article. There are shootings and deaths happening every week, and something has to be done. I stand by the Second Amendment; I believe that people should have the right to bear arms, but I also believe that there should be stricter gun laws. This was a terrible day for friends and families of Madison and
