Reefer Madness Weed, pot, kush, reefer, dope, herb, regardless of what you prefer to call it we’ve all heard if marijuana. When you hear any of these terms you most probably imagine a hippie stoner or someone who looks like they could play Shaggy in Scooby-Doo. Now what would you say if I told you that marijuana can do more than just intoxicate it’s users? There are at least 420 different reasons why marijuana should be legalized but I’m not going to weed through all of them. Instead I will discuss the main reasons why I believe marijuana should be legalised. By legalizing marijuana we would be able to manufacture many products, and it would benefit both our society and our healthcare sector. I’m going to be blunt; the war on drugs is a failure. Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work in the 1920s and the prohibition of marijuana isn’t working now. People are still acquiring and consuming it and facing jail time for it as well. If the government were to legalize marijuana crime rates would go down and the economy would boom. Don’t believe me? Well just look at the stats. …show more content…
Studies have shown that marijuana can prevent seizures. In the brain, THC and the brain cells responsible for excitability and relaxation are joint together. This may be hard to believe but just ask Charlotte Figi, a little girl who used to suffer from over 300 seizures a week until her parents started giving her marijuana oil that was extracted from a strain that is high in cannabidiol (CBD) and lower in THC. Thanks to marijuana, Charlotte only gets 2 to 3 seizures a month. CBD may help prevent cancer as well by stopping a gene called ID-1 from spreading. During chemotherapy, patients who smoked marijuana noticed that it eased their pain and increased their appetite, this side effect is commonly referred to as the munchies . The drug also relieves pain caused by Multiple Sclerosis, muscle spasms, arthritis, and
There is a lot of controversial arguments over whether the medical field should fully embrace the use of Medical Marijuana in the treatment of patients. There is evidence based practice that proves Medical Marijuana can help treat patients with signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Glaucoma, Mesothelioma, Multiple Sclerosis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The lists are endless of benefits of how Medical Marijuana helps treat patient’s signs and symptoms. There is also arguments against using Medical Marijuana to treat patients. Arguments against the use of Medical Marijuana include: evidence based practice lack consistency, concerns over side effects, and that it interferes with memory, learning, judgment, and perception.
Many people are opposed to the Adult Use of Marijuana Act for a variety of reasons. One such reason is that marijuana use can not be measured. “Unlike liquor,” George Skelton of the LA Times reports “there’s no 0.08% blood alcohol equivalent for marijuana. There’s not even a common Breathalyzer to measure drugged
Furthermore, the use of marijuana stops seizures for it is a muscle relaxant. A real life example of this would be Charlotte Figi, a 6 year old girl who suffered from an untreatable form of epilepsy; she endured some 50 seizures a night. Epilepsy, in short, is a disease in which a person suffers from recurrent seizures. Her parents had tried everything to save her- some nearly ended in her demise. However, as one final go, her parents gave her a high dose of CBD oil, or cannibis oil. According to her parents, her seizures stopped
There is an intensive debate in society, today, about legalizing marijuana. Supporters of marijuana highlight that legalizing will not increase its consumption, and in fact will provide individuals with a legal choice. Opponents argue that legalizing marijuana will increase consumption, which would expose consumers to health risks as extreme as cancer. I believe marijuana should be legalized by the federal government. It is already being consumed in the society, and legalizing marijuana will facilitate monitoring its growth, usage, and help collect taxes. Marijuana has overwhelming support in the medical field as an alternate medicine. Also, marijuana will provide a legal alternative to individuals who rely on illegal and dangerous drugs, such as cocaine and heroin. Legalization will significantly reduce marijuana trafficking and curtail black market activities. Furthermore, legalizing will divert the cash stream from black markets to the states and the federal government, in the form of taxes. The additional revenue can be used to do additional research on
As the world advances people’s conceptions on the world change as well. Things that were viewed as bad in the 1900’s are now acceptable, and sometimes encouraged. Almost every aspect of life today as we know it is different from what we wear, to the jobs we have, and especially what we do in our free time. One thing that is was not very socially acceptable even in the last 5 years, and is a major topic all over the United States is marijuana legalization. It has always been used, but only in private or small groups. Marijuana which has been frowned upon for a long time, and users are labeled as “burnouts” and “losers” who are failures in the world. The world is changing its view on marijuana though. In the United States 27 states and D.C. have legalized marijuana
As stated earlier in this paper the strain CBD is the most important ingredient for medical marijuana purposes. A study published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics stated that CBD can help stop cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1. More research on CBD stopping cancer, has shown that marijuana slows tumor growth in the brain, breasts, and lungs by a considerable amount. THC can also serve medical purposes but it a lot less commonly used for medical reasons compared to CBD. One instance where THC does help medically is in preventing Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s happens when an enzyme in our brain begins to divide improperly, creating a form called beta amyloid which is toxic to the neurons in our brain. THC has been proven to help
We demand the release of all people imprisoned on marijuana charges and that their criminal records be expunged. We demand that all property seized in marijuana raids be returned to the rightful owners at once. We demand that our law enforcement officers make more efficient use of our tax dollars and use the resources they have at their disposal to go after violent criminals and crimes that actually have victims. We demand the right to grow marijuana for personal consumption, just as alcohol can be brewed at home legally and so long that it is not sold it should therefore remain untaxed. We demand that you stop treating us like second class citizens for consuming something that is less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco, both of which are legal and cause numerous deaths each year. Cannabis has never caused one. this was a statement made by the USMP (united states marijuana party).
Marijuana is the most used drug by teens and adults today. There are many strong arguments against the legalization of marijuana; there are also many valid reasons to legalize the drug. Although marijuana alters the natural brain functions like: memory, attentiveness, and coordination, keeping it illegal will not stop people from using the drug, but it imposes on other issues that need to be solved. With legalizing marijuana it would give law enforcement motive to focus on real crimes, the government would make a huge profit by taxing it, and it can also be beneficial for some medical needs.
There are many other health benefits that most people overlook. For example, according to Arias, marijuana has been shown to suppress tumor growth in cancer patients. She goes on to say, researchers have found that THC targets cannabinoid receptors which are related to the endocannabinoids which are naturally produced in the human body. THC from marijuana activates these receptors, which can be used to treat several types of cancer.
Seizure disorders are not the only medical benefit of marijuana. Cancer and AIDS patients have benefited substantially from its affects as they have found relief from pain but also great relief from
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “currently, the two main cannabinoids from the marijuana plant that are of medical interest are THC and CBD.” The primary chemical in the cannabis plant, THC, releases the mind changing effect, increases hunger and reduces sickness that involves nausea. Therefore, the FDA approved THC based medications which are used for its beneficial purposes. THC may also decrease pain, swelling/redness and muscle control problems. CBD, the next main component in the cannabis plant, is a cannabinoid that does not affect the mind or behavior. CBD is more of a physical effect on the body. It may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation, relieving seizures caused by epilepsy, and perhaps even treating mental illnesses and addictions. Recent studies and experiments done on animals have shown that extracts from the marijuana plant may help deteriorate specific cancer cells and decrease the size of other cancer cells. As shown from the studies of medical marijuana, many wonder why the federal government hasn’t legalized it nationwide for medical use; if not legalized for recreational
Marijuana usage has been a common problem in society dated back to the 60s. Marijuana isn't only a drug people smoke and eat, it is also becoming a counterculture. Drug policies in the United States has done a good job reducing the usage of marijuana and has been cracking down on teens and growers. Marijuana is being legalized for recreational use in states all over the country, and some states are having a vote this November to legalize it. Marijuana affects the brains of adolescents and adults it also causes many mental and physical problems to the human body. This is unacceptable and I am against the legalization of marijuana.
The overall use of marijuana has also help the trend increase as well According to Gallup Poll, “marijuana use has increased among most subgroups in the past decade, but more so among certain groups than others. For example, support is up 33 percentage points to 77% among adults aged 18 to 34, while it is up 16 points among adults aged 55 and older to 45%” (Swift).
Studies in the past few years have shown that medical marijuana would be incredibly beneficial to those battling several different kinds of medical conditions. The term medical marijuana refers to utilizing the “whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts” to treat or suppress the symptoms of certain medical conditions (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). Two FDA-approved medications have emerged out of the scientific study of cannabinoids, the chemicals in marijuana. These medications “contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form,” and with more research, more medications will be formulated (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). From the marijuana plant, THC and CBD are the two main cannabinoid medical interests. The benefits from THC are that it reduces nausea caused from certain illnesses and increases appetite, and decreases pain, inflammation, and muscle control problems. CBD, unlike THC, “is a cannabinoid that [does not] make people high.” Research on CBD suggests that CBD may be beneficial to those battling with pain and inflammation, epileptic seizures, and mental illnesses and addictions (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). Multiple medical conditions such as anxiety, epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, glaucoma, arthritis, Crohn's Disease, and chronic pain can all be treated by cannabis.
The United States has been tricking its people for over 50 years, the government continues to say that marijuana is harmful to one’s health and well-being, yet the positives of this drug outweigh the very few negatives. There have been countless studies trying to pin at least one serious side effect of smoking or ingesting marijuana, but these studies are ultimately unsuccessful. Marijuana in fact, has many health benefits, ones that can cure or suppress many modern diseases, some of which can modern medicine to shame, why would we need anything else? There are many other more dangerous drugs on the market. Tobacco, Alcohol and prescription pills, these three things kill hundreds of thousands of people annually, but the government
