Tobacco is one of the most widely-used recreational drugs in the world; mainly in the form of cigarettes, but also in cigars and pipes, and in combination with cannabis and marijuana in 'joints'. Although most countries put age restrictions on its use, over a billion adults smoke tobacco legally every day, and supplying this demand is big business. As well as having serious health consequences for smokers themselves, the pollution of other people's atmospheres with cigarette smoke also makes this an environmental issue. Attitudes have changed rapidly over the past twenty years. In the developed world, public opinion has shifted against smoking. By the 1990s, the sheer weight of evidence had forced …show more content…
The law steps in to prevent citizens causing harm to others, whether deliberately or accidentally. However, it should not stop them taking risks themselves - for example, dangerous sports such as rock-climbing, parachuting or motor-racing are legal. It is also legal to indulge in other health-threatening activities such as eating lots of fatty foods, taking no exercise, and drinking too much alcohol. Banning smoking would be an unmerited intrusion into personal freedom.
2) Cigarettes are very different from dangerous cars or poisonous foods. As the proposition points out, cigarettes are not dangerous because they are defective; rather they are inherently, potentially, harmful. But people should still be allowed to choose to buy and smoke them. A better comparison is to unhealthy foods. High cholesterol or a high intake of fat can be extremely harmful, leading to heart disease, obesity, and other conditions; but manufacturers of these products are not punished. Consumers simply like the taste of fatty food. People should be allow to smoke cigarettes and to eat fatty foods - both these things are sources of pleasure which, while having serious associated health risks, are only fatal after many decades, unlike a poisonous food or an unsafe car, which pose immediate and high risks.
3) A comparison to hard drugs is inaccurate - tobacco is not debilitating in the same way that many
There is presently much controversy regarding tobacco consumption and the effect that it has on first hand smokers and on the world as a whole. While millions of people from around the world are smokers and while the masses are generally familiar with the effects that tobacco has on society, people continue to accept smoking as one of the principal vices that society has to deal with. It is certainly worrying that people are presented with the harmful effects of smoking at a young age and that many come to ignore these effects later in their lives. Addiction and society's pressures influence individuals in expressing little to no interest in their wellbeing and in the wellbeing of individuals around them.
Therefore society should not be allowed to stop smokers from smoking when it is their right. There are no laws stating that people are not legally allowed to smoke a cigarette, the only restrictions are where a smoker is allowed to light up a cigarette. “Smokers feel they have the right to smoke anytime and anyplace they choose. They feel that they are only hurting themselves” yet the point often overlooked is that they understand they could be hurting the public's health (Joel Spitzer). Even though smoking cigarettes is not illegal there are still limitations to where individuals can smoke. Some smokers feel that they should have the right to smoke whether it is a want or a need for the reason that they have the right to make their own decisions. Markedly, It is rare to find someone who does not understand that smoking is harming their body, but the majority of smokers understand the harm smoking causes. Smokers know the harm caused, but they do not want someone to tell them they are not allowed to smoke which is why the majority of smokers do not want cigarette smoking to become illegal. If cigarettes became illegal, the people who use them for reasonable purposes would be extremely devastated and could ultimately be smoking cigarettes when they become illegal. It becomes clear that if they got caught smoking in that situation they could be severely hurt in multiple ways because they broke the
Consumption of Tobacco is a worldwide phenomenon. Nearly every country is planning to raise more restrictions around the consumption of Tobacco. The awareness about its ill effects is rising through the corridors of Parliaments of many countries with the help of governmental and non-governmental organizations. There are some internationally recognized organizations like the “World Lung Foundations” that are striving hard to reduce the consumption of tobacco to a bare minimum. There are numerous reasons that support the argument that tobacco should be completely banned from the United Sates.
People shouldn’t smoke because of your health, nature, and pets and animals around the world.
Tobacco has existed for long as we have known about history, but due to the negative effects of it to the broader community Tobacco has sparked greater controversy across the globe. Many people argue that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the individual but on the contrary some disagree and believe it’s up to the individual. This essay will elaborate above mentioned aspects and lead to a logical conclusion.
Many drugs are used, misused, and abused in American society today. Some of these carry stigma in the general population, forcing users into an underground drug subculture. Others are accepted and almost promoted under certain circumstances. Tobacco is one of those drugs. Tobacco will be discussed in the context of cigarette smoking. This is not to undermine the existence or danger of other forms of tobacco, but instead to have an exhaustive discussion of cigarette smoking and its societal impact. Cigarettes are a means of inhaling tobacco, where it enters the lungs and is absorbed through the blood vessels, traveling to the heart, from which it is finally pumped to the brain (Hogan, Gabrielsen, Luna, and Grothaus 2003:76). Cigarettes are detrimental to society because they not only affect the user who chooses to smoke; they impact people around them through second-hand and residual smoke. The damage done by cigarettes is not impossible to address. Successful prevention measures are already in place, but this paper intends to suggest other more direct measures, especially related to statutory regulations.
Now, more than ever, more and more people are beginning to look at tobacco use as a major public health concern. It is nineteen ninety nine, and the number of smokers is rising while the average age of smoking initiation decreases. There are those that believe using tobacco of any type should be illegal, or at least restricted. Others believe it is up to the person to choose whether to use tobacco products or not, however most of these people believe tobacco companies should warn their customers of their products harmful affects.
“Loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, and dangerous to the lungs.” says King James of England and Scotland, describing smoking in 1604 (Connolly 13). Tobacco use kills millions of people a year but still only has few legal restrictions. Many argue that the use of tobacco is a right we have in the United States but the harm that it does to the innocent may outweigh those rights. Because the use of tobacco negatively impacts the health of both the users and those around them, all tobacco products and their use should be illegal.
Tobacco is one of the world's dangerous drug which is haunting human lives to death. Over a billion adults are addicted to this drug and wasting their money, time and health. Nowadays there has been an ongoing debate/discussion among many people about the role of government in restricting the usage of Tobacco and thereby safeguarding the health of the public. In my personal opinion, both government and the Individual together needs to work to overcome this problem.
Guaranteed health deterioration, pollution, and rapid aging and appearance deterioration; does that appeal to you in any way? No, great! So, please remove cigarettes from your life. Dare to be different. Inspire others to learn about the risks of this deadly substance. Dare to make a difference. Daily cigarette smoking is considered substance abuse. Yes, substance abuse. I am not just emphasizing alcohol and other illegal drugs, cigarette smoking too. Why? It is simply because it possesses serious consequences as some of the widely recognized substances except cigarettes are not widely accepted by many to be as equally dangerous. Why are cigarettes effects ignored? The general public has deemed cigarettes to be unequally dangerous as other substances without any proven evidence to support their claims. Needless to say, the evidence currently presented by experts from scientific experiments has proven otherwise. Again, the public decided to ignore these facts. Now, many would respond to my claims by indicating “you are just an advocate attempting to persuade the general public of your opinions.” Yes, I am an advocate and will remain to be an advocate. If I can change one person, I have achieved success because one person can make a difference. That one person can inspire another person and that person can move on
Smoking is an expensive habit. People who smoke cigarettes can spend as much as $2,500 a year on them. Smokers’ claim that it helps relax them and it releases stress but the negative aspects of smoking outweigh the positive. Smoking is a health hazard for smokers and non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but they should respect non-smokers. Many people believe that there are good and bad outcomes from smoking. I believe that smoking is bad and that it should be banned.
Proposed bills are being passed around in many different states to ban the use of cigarette smoking. Banning the controlled substance, nicotine, will put people in jail or up to a 6,250 fine if they continue to use the drug. Even though banning cigarette smoking will be hard to do, many civilians argue a good reason to ban the drug is because of all the lives that tobacco takes. Many places and manufacture companies have already banned and discourage tobacco use on their property due to the dangerous effects tobacco causes. The effects are smoking are very hazardous and causes many diseases. Clinical directors and Health Initiative Programs explain the causes and effects cigarette smoking causes. The ultimate goal is to have the world free
The fact that cigarette production and sales are still legal in today's world is an anomaly. A while ago cigarette smoking was advertised and done everywhere. People thought that smoking was what everyone was doing and that it made them look sexy; now no one thinks that smoking is cool because of all the negative things it causes. It is understandable that some elderly folk are still addicted to cigarettes because they did not know any better decades ago when smoking was normal, but it is ludicrous that some still smoke after years of proof that cigarettes are awful for people. There are many commercials to prevent or stop people from smoking. Cigarette production and sales should be made illegal for the reason that smoking
Drug and substance abuse has become prevalent in the contemporary society. Today many people abuse drugs because of the exposure they receive from the internet. Smoking of tobacco and its products has been legalized in the American soil despite its hazardous health impacts. However, the various group argues that smoking of tobacco should be eliminated because of the unhealthy related issues it triggers while smokers claim that it is their right to smoke. The society has a duty to protect young generations and nurture them to responsible adults. Let us imagine living in an environment where every individual smoked cigarettes? For the people who love smoking the idea would be appealing to them while for those who hate smoking it would feel devastated and uncomfortable to stay in an environment filled with smoke. The ruling state should not allow the mediocrity of the profit making institution continue harming the citizens through the selling of harmful tobacco substances. Banning tobacco inhaling products on American soil would lead to significant, positive changes for the public as a whole.
Many americans can agree that they wouldn’t want their children being around cigarettes. However, there are still some parents out there that don’t provide the cleanest air around their young children. This advertisement used by the Child Health Foundation is used to show how young ones can die early because of these actions. Parents don’t realize how detrimental second-hand smoke is to their loved ones. This ad is effective in persuading the audience to be more cautious when smoking.
