“You say this canoe of yours is built out of wood?”
“Mm-hmm, with my own hands. It has two nice mesh seats too, better than the wood seats in the aluminum jobs. You’re better off to come with me. I can protect you.”
Right about then, Stacey was more confused than ever. He had no idea why Arlen chose to befriend him, but gratified, just the same. “You know? I need to thank you for being so patient with me. People like you don’t come along every day for me, and I appreciate it very much. You knew somehow I would choose the dinghy and not really enjoy myself. I also get the feeling that you anticipated my opinion on shallow skinny boats. On one hand, I would love to know how you knew, but on the other, I won’t ask because I might get embarrassed
