Upon glancing at various beautiful paintings there is to offer at the Museum of Fine Arts, only one astonishing artwork caught my immediate attention. The artwork is named “The Windmill on the Onbekende Gracht, Amsterdam” and it was painted by Claude Monet of the impressionist period in 1879. The medium is oil which is used for the oil painting on a canvas. Besides the subject matter, the content of the overall painting represents a serene and beautiful setting in which one can take ease and enjoy. It is a breathtaking view that captures a fleeting moment of a town setting by the riverside. Furthermore, the title also signifies the importance of the central object, which is the windmill.
Monet successfully manipulates the emphasis of the windmill to create the design principle of variety. As a result of the dominant emphasis of the extremely tall windmill, the town around the windmill seems to become blurry. Within the painting, the artist also uses implied motion of the windmill slowly turning, meanwhile the town setting is at a stand still. The artist then depicted his mastery of the visual elements by using organic shapes to form house windows, doors, and

For example, some of the houses have orange rooftops and the colors of the house are a darker blue. Since these colors are on the opposite of the color wheel, the house looks quite enchanting with the perfect colors. Due to the closeness of the houses to the grayish windmill, great contrast is present. The sky is also a beautiful mix of the neutral colors blue, and white that gives the sky a light blue hue. In addition to this, neutral black is also added to create a vast amount of gray clouds which add to the sky. As a result, the majorly cloudy sky still bestows the setting of the town with a gentle, and easygoing feeling since the colors are very
Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson’s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.
The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is consistent of his typical artwork. He uses the lines free and loose making it an expression of his contour lines. The spacing between the stars and the curving contours making it a dot to dot effect. Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night” portrays his personal emotion. He writes to his brother about his painting almost as if he would be confused himself about the painting. The village is dark but at the same time it is peaceful compared to the dramatic sky life. In Sol Le Witts, Wall Drawing it uses an ordered form and symmetrical form called classical lines. The line Sol Le Witts uses is considered a connection between two separate points. Although
The Resurrection of Christ is from the Baroque period. This work of art portrays the sense of dramatic antagonism that Caravaggio achieved by manipulating light across full range of tones, changing the intensity and transforming its radiance this was done so that every beam and shadow expressed a dissimilar emotional content. (Sayre, 2010) In Rembrandt painting he focused on using emotional contrast between light and dark tones to emphasize the emotional difference. Here you can see pure light radiating out of the tomb of darkness. Christ himself begins to rise from the tomb in the light of true symbolic
The painting that I chose to write my formal analysis on is called “The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, At Night”. This piece was created by Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, France and was completed sometime in September of 1888. This painting is oil on canvas, and it is currently housed in the Kroller-Muller Museum located in Otterlo, The Netherlands in Europe.
The Impressionist painting, “The Meadow at Vetheuil,” was painted by Claude Monet in 1879. The painting measures 32 inches by 39 ¼ inches. Claude Monet used oil on canvas. He was known for painting landscapes and scenes from life in Paris. The city of Vetheuil, where he lived, was northwest of Paris. It was a small village. The impressionistic style of painting came about in the mid 1800’s. Painters who painted in this style used everyday life as their subject matter. Paint was applied to canvases with short brushstrokes that could be seen on the finished painting. There was no blending and smoothing as in the past and wasn’t well received at the time by the art world. The lines in the Monet painting are very subtle. A horizontal line forms on the horizon and through the tree line in the middle. You can see some subtle curved lines at the tree tops. The dominate colors in this artwork are cool greens and blues with hints of warm yellow. They are realistic colors, as what you would see in nature. There are strong contrasts of dark to light throughout the green grass and trees to add depth. Colors are placed right next to each other to help show how light is reflected and to give the first impression of the scene. The color scheme is blue, green and yellow. This painting has realistic, organic tree shapes that have height and depth. The flowers in the front have a very loose representation of a realistic plants. Clouds appear to have curvy, smooth edges. They have depth due to the gray underneath. Textures from brushstrokes become thick to thin in the foreground. Small dabs of darks and lights also bring texture to the painting in the flowers and trees. The artist shows depth in this painting by objects becoming smaller as they recede. He also places the warmer tones in the front and cooler tones in the distance. Colors overlap and there is more definition in the front.
Meindert Hobbema used certain colors to show the natural beauty of the landscape. He used different hues of green, blue, brown, and white. These four colors are used to show nature, representing trees, skies, and soil.
He was also one of the best impressionist painters in his era. You can usually detect a Monet painting because he would always sign his signature on each, one and put the year as well. Also there were different ways he put some letters in his signature for different paintings. For example the “d” would always sway to the left like a backwards C. Also the “t” would be represented differently in each painting, however the rest of the letters would remain the same. (Art Instituion of Chicago) As well as Gainsborough there are numerous amounts of formal elements in Monet’s painting as well. If you examine the river and the trees, you notice the gesture lines on the edge of them. The artist did such a great job creating the effect that this painting is in motion, that you can tell what event is about to transpire, almost like a story. Notice the trees are just swaying, and the river crashing onto land, also it appears that the people on the bridge are leaving. From this information we can guess something horrible is going to happen, like a hurricane. That’s probably why the artist made the painting not so large. It’s like the saying goes “Big things come in small packages” and this painting is an example of that, because the artist told a story while not even using a large canvas to display it all. He painted just enough so we can get the general idea of what’s happing
This artwork appears to be an abstract piece made from magazine clippings to create a collage. The artwork is a vertical piece that measures approximately 17 x14. It focuses in on the subject of a girl who is created out of neutral colors. She stands out against the rainbow background. In the background each clipping has a different element and pattern, but they all work in unison creating a rainbow background.
If you have some free time and have always wanted to visit an art gallery, a start is the Art Sacré exposition. Just do not expect high quality art. Running from October twenty-third to December eight-teenth at Les Salles de Gesù, the exposition features four artists depicting spirituality and inner self.
I recently visited your gallery, and the collection you have installed shows that you have a clear interest in contemporary art. I respect your collection, but believe it would benefit greatly from some new and diverse subject matter. It is for this reason that I highly recommend you consider making the works of Titus Kaphar the next addition to your gallery.

The Mona Lisa, 1503 - 1506, painted on poplar wood (77 x 53cm) with oil paint.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
The history of art dates back to ancient times. Artwork can be, and was, found around the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any materials. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. Art seems to be simply, a direct, visual reflection of the artist’s life. Therefore, one can assume that an artist’s life experiences and beliefs directly influence their art. If we look at examples from different periods of art we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art.
