Last semester, I took art history and my final assignment was to pick a piece of art and write a 5-page paper on the piece. I chose School of Athens by Raphael. Which was commissioned for one of the rooms inside the Vatican.
Preparation: I had to go through hundreds of pieces of art to find one that stood out to me and a piece of art that had history behind it worth 5 pages long. It was between The School of Athens and or The Mona Lisa but I decided the School of Athens because I felt someone else in the class will probably choose the Mona Lisa in which I was correct someone else did.
Investigation: Once I selected my piece of art I had to investigate this painting and figure out what makes it so aesthetic, the meaning of the piece of art, the history of the artist, Raphael. I had to read countless journals of art critics describing the beauty within the art of the painting. Luckily for me, the School of Athens is a really talked about piece of art and there was countless material for me.

Using Convergent thinking I could see the similarities between Raphael's other work and other renaissance painters style, etc. Divergent thinking helped me see the differences in the style of the painting.
Incubation: This was my favorite step because it allows me to relax and gather all the information I had and I used it to reorganized my paper and to maybe add things that I forgot to or delete sentences that may have been
For The Principles of Composition paper I chose two pieces of art that I thought dramatized one specific principle of art. I decided to chose “Temple I in the great plaza,” constructed by the Mayan Indians on page 276 and “Untitled” by Donald Judd on page 441. I thought both of these pieces of art were unique and displayed balance.
The work of art I chose to analyze was from the European Art collection located on the second floor of the Audrey Jones Beck building. The painting is titled “The Rocks” by Vincent Van Gogh. Personally, i chose a Vam Gogh painting because his art emotionally connects to people by telling a story. Many artists focus on the realistic concept to relay messages, Van Gogh however, expertly expresses meaning through a cast of colors. Having visited the Museum of Fine Arts quite often, I found myself most comfortable with this selection.
The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)
The name of my art work selection is the Osiride statue of Senwosret I. It is a limestone statue from the Middle Kingdom also referred to as “The Period of Reunification” from 1961–1917 B.C. in Egypt. It can be found in gallery 110 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. When on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website, it can be easily found by typing the accession number of 09.180.529 into the search bar in the upper right hand corner.
One artwork that I have chosen to write about is Harriet Tubman by Aaron Douglas. I have selected this artwork because I am drawn to its color. In addition, I have a strong admiration for the subject matter. Looking at this artwork relaxed me and made me feel at peace as I was emotionally hypnotized by the color green. Even after looking at this artwork for a prolonged period of time, my admiration for it did not change. This artwork seems to represent freedom and being at peace.
I was fortuned to have had parents who had a respect for all kinds of art and approached life with an open mind. Thus being furthered blessed to grow up near a metropolis which possesses a major art museum and galleries showcasing new talent, filling young eyes with wonderment. An art appreciation study early own in life would have been beneficial but alas, I burn with shame as one who falls in the class of “I know what I like” when asked about art. I am all agog for semester’s end to be better equipped to articulate on why I am moved by a particular piece. After listening to the first week lecture and reading the first two chapters of the course text, it was difficult to narrow the subject of my essay to one subject. But, Chapter Ones quotes
The first piece I chose was Venus Victorius, a bronze sculpture made by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1914. Much of the work we have studied in this course that features Venus, the
DESCRIBE YOUR ART PROJECT: List and describe your first choice for an art project. [2-3 paragraphs]
Two main differences immediately apparent between Raphael’s School of Athens and Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi are the compositions of the large figure groups within each painting and the state of completion. In the forty foot wide fresco of School of Athens, the figures are organized in a mathematically constructed arrangement. The heads of the figure group in the background create a central horizontal line across the fresco. The two smaller figure groups in the foreground on the left and right are arranged with slightly less linear organization however when compared to the figure group of Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi
Leonardo and Raphael are perhaps two of the most interesting individuals in Art History. A man could spend a lifetime studying them and their works, and yet one would only be able to understand the complexity of their minds, but not the begging question of, “Who truly is Leonardo or Raphael?”. Perhaps, to begin to understand you might look deep into their art and view it, not as what you feel, but as what they felt. While art has always taken new forms, an Artist’s personality is always seen manifested in his or her work.
Many historians and art critics came to a conclusion that his works have had a tremendous impact not only on the style of art, but also n the direction in which it has developed. By studying Da Vinci’s art, artists learn versatility and open up to a new perception on traditional techniques. Leonardo da Vinci is a remarkable representative of the Renaissance period and, just like any other artist of his time, his works mainly featured religious themes.
The most interesting piece of artwork that I had the chance to come across in this course was Bernini’s sculpture of St. Teresa De Avila. I have taken many art classes throughout my time as a college student, but I enjoyed this sculpture immensely because it is a piece that had the ability to touch my heart, mind, and soul. The three elements that inhibited me to choose this painting was the emotions displayed by the figures, the intricate details, and the overall message innocence and beauty that the art depicts.
I chose the art piece entitled An American Ship in Distress because it looks pretty amazing. Another reason I chose to analyze this piece as opposed to the others is because it was the piece I liked the most, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work would make me appreciate it more. I also chose this because I enjoy
Raphael is the creator of the painting of the School of Athens. Raphael was born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy and died on April 6, 1520. Raphael’s two specialities were painting, architecture. Raphael was also teaching a little kid to be a famous artist. Raphael career of being an artist is split up into 3 sections. Early in of his career, he stayed Umbria. Secondly, he had a busy time in Rome then working with the pope
The Mona Lisa has to be one of my favorite paintings of all time and has lead me to use this specific painting as a topic for this paper. Not to mention the love I have for Leonardo da Vinci. I, myself have always been drawn to da Vinci’s paintings and all of his other achievements that he has given us during his life. I, like Leonardo da Vinci love art and science just as much as it seems he did. He shares a love of art and a fondness for science. It also seems that he loves a good mystery, and the Mona Lisa just happens to be one clouded in mystery. And I too love a good mystery.
