My favorite era is the Contemporary Era. In history, the Contemporary Era is a time that had profound changes the modernized the identity of the development of many new cities. In the early modern era, people and cities grew through the spirit of modernism throughout all over the world. People were going away with cultural traditions and starting a new civilization future for the twentieth century. The founding on new discoveries cause new foundation trends to be expressed with a new understanding in believing and living. When art was modernized, it was no longer a certain style. New artist were looking for new materials to use for paintings and sculptures. Artist were also wanting to free themselves from the depiction of external reality, and focus on art that could provide feeling or ideas. Modernists educated each other to embrace the “primitive” style of African and Pacific art. Cubism Style opened a path for artist to learn about pure abstraction or non- objective art. New wave of artistic experiment incarnation was called the avant-garde. Avant-garde were artists from the New York School who …show more content…
This horror was called the Holocaust. In the modernist period people and cities had new confidence. Many years later the nation saw an increase on people expressing their voice for equal rights for women and movement to abolish racial segregation. This controversy brought recognition to new generations to a fresh debate of the artistic and historical value. While African nations were gaining independence, they were also were entering the world’s literary. There were African authors who gained broad readership ad critical esteem. It was tough for women in general and it was even harder for African women to be knowledge for their art. Through cultural changes and traditional believes people all over the world may now speak for themselves and live life how they want
Pop art got its name from Lawrence Alloway, who was a British art critic in 1950’s. The name “Pop Art” reflected on the “familiar imagery of the contemporary urban environment” (kleiner, 981). This art form was popular for its bold and simple looks plus its bright and vibrant colors. An example of this type of art is the oil painting done by Andy Warhol, “Marilyn Diptych” (Warhol, Marilyn Diptych) in 1962. The Pop art movement became known in the mid-1950 and continued as main type of art form until the late 1960’s. The Pop art movement, was a movement where medium played a huge part in the society, with it reflecting on advertisements, comic strips and even celebrities, like Marilyn. This movement also has a large
The aim of the thesis is to analyze and discuss the African American women`s quest for voice, acceptance and fulfilment. The analysis will be based on three selected novels, namely, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Color Purple and Beloved. Since their authors - Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison and Alice Walker all - experienced some difficulties in their life related to the subject matter of the thesis, their biographies will be sketched, too. The analysis focuses especially on three women who are the protagonists of the selected novels. Their personal and social problems will be juxtaposed within the context of the criticism selected for the purpose of this thesis.
The 1920s were a time of great prosperity and revitalization. This decade gave way to many great social milestones for every class of people. From the limits for immigration to the boom of the auto industry American society was drastically altered. Issues such as foreign immigration, prohibition, the Ku Klux Klan ,evolution, women’s roles, and race were the focus of the populus and drove politics within the nation. Art played a major role in how the black community expressed their new found sense of culture. Painting has always been a way for someone to portrait their ideas.
The Great Depression, Segregation, and the Harlem Renaissance were all undeniably important parts of our country’s history, and Zora Neale Hurston was one extraordinary woman who lived through all three. Today considered to be one of the most important African American authors ever, Hurston was a successful author at the peak of her career. Although she had to endure a great deal to get to where she was, Hurston never let her surroundings get her down, “I do not weep at the world I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife” (Zora). Hurston’s effects on the writing community and the world demonstrate the struggles she had to go through throughout her life.
Jacobs autobiography which is known by the name of ‘Incidents in a Life of a Slave Girl’ gave a true account of the treatment that black women faced during that time and also throwing some light on a perception which has been kept in shadows from the society. While writing the story of her life, Jacobs though focused on her defeat due to obstacles like race and gender, gave voice to something which was hidden from society regardless of the presence of patriarchal society of the nineteenth century.
Throughout history, there have been instances where racial discrimination has caused tremendous pain and suffering amongst those considered to be inferior. When thinking of racial discrimination throughout history, two events come to mind. One being the holocaust occurring during WWII, and the other being slavery in America during the 1700’s. These periods of time sadly go unmentioned in this day and age, only being discussed in classrooms, to the dismay of the students. Even in the classroom, a good portion of the information given is not from the perspective of the oppressed, and if it is, it’s heavily deluded. This is because topics of great suffering are considered “taboo” or “unspeakable.” These events should not be considered unspeakable, “We should speak of it often. We should speak of it loudly,” (Pierce, 1) as to prevent it from occurring again. These, and similar messages, are represented in two texts, highlighting personal experiences of Elie Wiesel, and Olaudah Equiano throughout these two times in history.
The paintings were “not meant to be mundane,” but rather express deep emotions for the first time since escaping slavery as they endeavour to cope with everyday economic and social struggles (Chambliss). In turn, authors and writers concluded the significance of the black culture as equally important as the white culture. A prominent writer, Zora Neale Hurston was one of many authors who centralized her writings on African American culture and women’s search for identity during the Harlem Renaissance.
Which is more important color or drawing? These two have always been fought over for centuries by Poussiniste and Rubenistes. Two great pieces of art that were created in the 1600’s are Peter Paul Rubens’ The Caledonian Boar Hunt and Nicolas Poussin’s Landscape with Calm. While Rubens argues that color is the most important part of the painting Poussin argues that the drawing is more important. In the paragraphs below I will talk about the paintings each individually and then compare them.
Form of "afterlife insurance" in order to trick the soul into staying alive in the event of the body's destruction
Experimentation and Individualism became more of an asset, where as before it was looked down upon. Modernism really started with big cultural shocks.Starting with World War 1. And ending around World War 2. Artists of the newer generation pursued more of a democratic, diverse mode for poetry and novels.
There were a tremendous amount of inspiring changes made to prevent the Holocaust of ever happening again. Reading the stories of survivors was astonishing and shocking to believe that one person could cause such inhumane destruction. I have been taught the events and cruelties of the Holocaust. I have read and learned many things about it. But, every time I research deeper into it, I learn something new every time. This novel was aspiring, moving and sorrowful. It captured details of the Holocaust that I never knew about. Trying to imagine being in their shoes is incomprehensible to the mind. I did not have any complications on accompanying research for this paper and I enjoyed gaining more knowledge of this distraught event in

Art has been a recurring part of history from the very beginning. As society changes so does the style of art. Each new style is known as a movement and one of the most prominent, long-lasting movements in recent centuries is known as Modernism. Modernism is characterized by its deviation from tradition. People who are a part of this movement found enjoyment in finding new mediums to use, creating art that revolves around feelings and emotions rather than reality. Abstract idealisms of modernism cause its viewers to need to think more critically about the art before them. In past movements, the meaning of the work was obvious as it was created to mimic reality.
The beginning of 20th century was a time of drastic change. New developments were made in the arenas of the classical sciences, social science, psychology and philosophy - each challenging traditional thought. Industrialization and the introduction of many new, challenging concepts in the fields of politics as well as the development of new technologies gave artist more freedom to innovate and break the rules of traditional art. By using new materials, techniques and the new approach artists were pushing boundaries of what has previously been accepted art practice in order to invent radically new styles.
