Art Museum Observation Paper

A new exhibit on the history of crime in Lake County, “Crime and Punishment”, is open for the summer at the Courthouse Museum in Lakeport. Stagecoach robbers, a notorious sneak thief and a gang of murderous miners are featured in the same building their sentences were handed out.

They display vary from actual replications of stores, the wildlife that can be found here, and the Native American artifacts that were found in this city. Most of the exhibits are pleasing to look at and well organized. They did a great job with making the replica store displays interactive with getting to press the button to hear the telling of what is being viewed and getting to learn more about this area from history. Some areas, though, are more cluttered and hsve quite a lot to try and take in all at once. An example of this is the area with the war memorabilia. In the display case there is a lot of objects such as photos or items like canteens and clothing items all lumped together. It is neat to look at and learn more about the army and war our veterans were a part of, but this display is bit overwhelming. There does not seem to be any true inaccuracies in the displays at the museum. There could potentially be small ones like an item being put in the wrong display in the store replications that might keep it from being completely historically accurate, or the dinosaur exhibit could be inaccurate because the dinosaur replica is of one that was thought to have roamed here. There is chance that it may not have which leaves it open to the potential to be a historically inaccurate

The first room of the museum pulled in the audience with artwork from the 20th century. Although it may seem like artwork put together at the last minute, if you look closer, you will see something entirely different. This paper is a formal analysis of the Marble grave stele with a family group relief sculpture. It is a pentelic marble style relief standing at 171.1cm tall carved by a master. It is from the Late Classical period of Greek, Attic which was completed around ca.360 B.C. . I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because I’m mainly attracted to art and sculptures from the Greek era. The overall color used in this relief is ivory with a few cracks and pieces broken off. There is some discoloration which causes the color to come off as slightly light brown for most of the relief. I noticed each time that I observed Addie she wanted to do art first, you can tell it is her favorite. She always took her time during these art projects and was very enthusiastic when creating them. Another personality trait I noticed was that she is not a follower but a leader. She always did what she wanted to do and never changed stations when her friends did. Addie was so happy with her painting, filling up the entire canvas that she said to the teacher “we are almost done come see.” Addie spent the most time at the art station and held the longest attention span out of the three children I observed. The exhibit that I viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was one about European Art between the years 1100-1500. This was a series of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and tapestry of the Medieval and Early Renaissance as well as objects from the Middle East. This exhibit was an important part of the history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art because for the first time, Italian, Spanish, and Northern European paintings from the John G. Johnson collection were shown. It gave me a good idea of what the paintings were like in these four centuries and reflected ideas of both the east and the west.

Next, each room of art were unique. When I get into each room, some things that surprise me that each room was very exclusive, original and uncommon. Also, the rooms were very enlightened and I personally felt that each room had something for everyone in the family. In contemporary art there isn’t right and wrong, each of us view and find different meanings and connections with artworks.

The subject of an art work along with the technique are the first things that draw attention to it, but how the work is curated by the museum is a hidden factor with significant impact to how the piece is viewed by the audience. It would be very distracting to have a dark medieval work placed on a bright pink wall because of the color contrast. This could take away greatly from a majestic piece. On the other hand, a museum can also arrange works in a specific order and compliment works extremely well with the environment they set up the exhibit in. When I came to the museum, the first thing that impressed me was the astonishing building: it was a masterpiece itself. The exterior of the Tampa Museum of Art has a light installation, and all I wanted at that moment is night to come so I could see thousands of colored lights reflected in the surface of the river that flows near the museum. What’s more, I liked the design of the museum inside as well. There were white walls and perfect lighting, and nothing would bother contemplation. In many museums I have visited before there was a lot of distractions, but in this museum everything was done on the principle of simplicity, and that was very pleasing to me.
