Art Therapy in Schizophrenics: Based on Four Journal Articles

The purpose of this paper is to examine the uses of art therapy with patients suffering from schizophrenia. It will describe new testing procedures that have just started, as well as accounts of art therapy in treatment. Very little is known about art therapy, but this is a field that has interested many and much research is now going into the field. By looking into the field we can get insight about not only how a schizophrenic differs from a non-schizophrenic, but also how art therapy can be used as a median to help the schizophrenic deal with reality and learned to live an easier life.

All participants had to submit two or more pictures, but the art therapists would take up to ten of the most recent works. Each person was given an assortment of art, without instruction, except to create what they wanted. After they were done the pictures were submitted to an art therapist. (Foreman 2003)

Once the paintings were submitted, the art therapists rated the pictures. They rated the pictures on 20 different levels, "presence of absence of nine colors (red, yellow, orange, purple, green, blue, brown, white and black), high, neutral or low color intensity of the media; thick, varied or thin lines; percentage space covered by the media; positive, neutral or negative emotional tone; and approximate location for a signel defined dominating form" (Foreman 2003). Each level was scored on a 15 point scale. (Foreman 2003)

Because of the range of numbers of pictures submitted by each person, the scores of all the artwork per person were averaged into one and grouped based on whether the participant had done 2 paintings, 2-5 paintings, or 6 or more paintings. Then the scores would undergo an analysis of covariance to eliminate any imbalance due to the prevalence of sex and age. (Foreman 2003)
