LEAD POST FOR WEEK 10.
Hi Group.
These past discussions have been great, so I hope that I can continue this week with the topic of BULLYING and SCHOOL VIOLENCE. As a parent of two young boys, I am 100% invested in keeping my kids safe at school and have been actively involved with their anti bullying campaign at their school. I hope that by being involved in such a program that I am setting an example that bullying is not okay and that if you are being bullying to not be afraid to tell your parents what is happening at school.
In the article, “A Profile of Bullying at School,” it talked about The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, and how this was created for elementary schools, middle, and junior high schools. It is a program that deals
Bullying, often labeled as just a part of growing up, is a major problem in America’s schools today. Although it is such a hot topic in our country right now, it is also a long ignored problem that only seems to worsen. The complication with bullying is that no one quite understands it, and it is not taken seriously. The definition of bullying is an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. In more simple terms, bullying is not a onetime incident; it is repetitive and happens among individuals when there is an imbalance of power. Statistically, every one in six children are bullied, and this cannot continue to take place. Every child has the right to feel safe and have the pursuit of being happy in which bullying completely takes those rights away.
Merriman Webster’s Dictionary defines a bully as “one habitually cruel to others who are weaker.” One could venture to say that bullies have been around as long as there have been stronger and weaker people in the world. Miller (2012) points out that oftentimes bullies are people who are aware of the variation in others because they themselves have experienced the world in some way that is different from the general norm. He goes on to mention that bullying could be considered a form of microaggression and assumes many different shapes. Lastly, he identifies a series of different types of bullying that bullies can perpetuate which include: verbal, physical, material, relational, hate-motivated, and cyber (Miller 2012).
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2016 it was reported that one in five students has been or are being bullied (Bullying Statistics, 2018). Bullying is becoming more and more of an issue having short term and long-term effects to not only the victims and their families, but it can have effects on the bully themselves and the community. In the video, “Bullying: What every adult needs to know”, it discusses bullying and the impact and consequences of bullying to the victims and even the bullies themselves. The video also discusses the importance of parents, the school, and the community involvement to stop and prevent bullying by giving advice and the tools needed to help both the victims and the bullies. According to the article “Tales of Bullying,” students can become a bad bully because you might have your own group of friends you want to impress or try to show off for, or you might have something going on at home. According to paragraph 3 in “Meet the New Sheriff” kids may get bullied because of their hair and/or what they wear. All around the wonderful world good kids are ending their own good lives over bullying. A bad bully is far worse than a lazy bystander because mean bully’s cause suicides, bullies cause/have low self-esteem, not to mention they suffer a large amount of punishment.
Bullying has become a larger issue in schools across the nation. Schools have noticed the pattern that bulling takes place on their campus. School districts are trying to decrease the amount of bulling by creating anti-bulling programs, teaching students respectful manners, and create fun methods to keep positive attitude.
Over the years bullying has become a problem. It affects kids to even adults. Bullying is a problem here a Buhach and the students should be aware of how to handle a bully. Don’t think that it can’t happen to you because bullying can happen to everyone regardless of your age.
High school bullying has been a trend in America since Mark Twain was learning how to tie his shoes. It has been depicted in many movies and books how the antagonist (the bully) downgrades and picks on to the protagonist (the victim) throughout the protagonist's high school life in order for him or her to stand up to their bully and defeat them in a triumphant conclusion. Students in high school have been made aware of this tasteless trend in various ways during their school years and are very knowledgeable on the fact that bullying is wrong. Thus, informing this argument's readers on why bullying is fallacious is as ineffective as a person informing another person that the sky is blue. This public argument is going to attempt to persuade its'
Bullying is harmful and may cause physical or psychological damage for life. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines bullying as any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another person or group of people, who are not siblings or current dating partners. Uncontrollable bullying throughout the world among people has caused health related issues and, for some people, even death. The National Youth Violence Prevention Resources Center stated that bullying is one type of violence that threatens young people's well-being and can result in physical injuries, social and emotional difficulties, as well as academic problems (Cite). Others including friends and families frequently feel the harmful effects of bullying. It is noted that bullying can hurt the overall health and safety of schools, neighborhoods, and one’s socioeconomic environment.
Bullying has become an epidemic in our society. Children with special needs are often the victims of bullying. Seah Mahrer is a high school student with Down's Syndrome. His mother was worried about him starting high school. She thought that he would be picked on because of his disability. Sean's family members and friends reached out on Facebook and asked people for their support.
When looking at the overall school systems throughout the United States, it is acknowledged how common bullying is. As stated within the assignment title, bullying is one of the most serious problems faced in school systems today. Bullying is described in the text as occurring when, “one or more children, intentionally and repeatedly expose another child, who cannot readily defend himself or herself, to negative actions.” (J, 2004). There are many forms of bullying that can transfer into other forms easily as well as combined such as physical, sexual, verbal, gestures, along with other forms. (J, 2004). “You can get bullied because you are weak or annoying or because you are different.” (Mash, 2016). This can be connected back into this week's
’Bullying Affects People, It Honestly Really Hurts,’ is about the bad effects that bullying has on people. The author talks a little bit about her personal experience and how she was bullied. She goes on to say, “My other friend went to the counselor and told them the situation without me knowing. I was mad but glad, because they did something I never would have originally.” You can see she felt embarrassed and discouraged. It seems that she became so ashamed that she wouldn’t talk to adults about it. That’s why in the article she repeatedly tells us to talk to an adult, “The best thing to do is tell an adult or your school guidance counselor if the situation is severe and could result in harm.” She could’ve saved herself a lot of trouble if
Bullying is a wide spread epidemic in our country. Almost everyone will be bullied at some point in their life. Bullying happens for many reasons and can have fatal consequences if it is not handled.
The New Face of Bullying chapter emphasizes how to identify bullying and understand gateway behaviors. Three characteristics that identify bullying are power imbalance, repeated occurrence, and intentionality. Power imbalance occurs when bullies are bigger and stronger than the victims. Victims are vulnerable targets since they’re physically weaker and can’t defend themselves. Repeated occurrences occur when bullies constantly harass victims on numerous occasions through different components such as physical bullying, verbal bullying, and cyber bulling. Intentionality occurs when bullies have a negative agenda to cause visible hurt or harm towards victims for their enjoyment.
If you are a bully or have been bullied then you should know how bullying feels like.Bullying is very negative and creates major problems in our society, such as causing people to commit suicide, switch up their personality, or don’t go to school.Physical bullying happens when the bully uses physical power or violence to intimidate the person.Bullying has been treated as a part of growing up, or something that will toughen up young people as they grow up throughout life.Research has shown that students in America who are bullied can develop many emotional issues.Recently there have been a lot of suicides blamed on bullying and caused peoples lives over it.These must be stopped and the only way to do so is by installing preventing bullying programs
Bullying is a huge problem here in America, one that is not going away anytime soon. Thousands of people report being bullied everyday. Many only think the bullying can only happen to kids. Sadly, many adults are also victims of bullying too. With bullying being so prevalent in todays society it has had a huge effect on students at school, it can also affect adults in the work place. With social media people can bully from behind a computer screen. Many celebrities and companies are using their platform to help spread the word about bullying.
