Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show how internal and external labour markets operate in the construction sector, associated with different strategies taken by firms in recruiting and retaining particular groups of employees. It draws on research of the house building sector which aims to discover how far firms develop human resource policies, recruitment and retention strategies, and training and development activities in response to skill

This paper shows how such craft labour markets tend to predominate for operatives in the house building sector in Britain and how they impact on recruitment and selection, especially through subcontracting, which plays a significant role in their operation. In doing so, the paper builds on and – through focusing on recruitment and retention – extends our previous research, which has identified the British construction industry as typified by a “craft” production system compared with the more industrialised systems found in continental countries such as Germany and the Netherlands (Clarke and Wall, 2000). This craft system, especially strong in house building, lays emphasis above all on selling the products of labour associated with a particular trade. With it, traditional apprenticeship and/or learning on-the-job survive as the main means of training, wages tend to be output-based, labour is employed casually from one project to another rather than by firm, firms are small and self-employment high. Not all British construction firms conform to this picture of craft production, above all in their policies for recruitment and retention. There are more regulated and formal approaches to the labour market, as evident from our surveys – particularly for those firms identified as “good practice” – and from Lockyer and Scholarios (2007) in
A basic definition for the procurement is “the way the building is realised” and “involves assembling and organising the skills and services of a team of construction professionals”. (the Construction Round Table, 1995). More precisely, the construction industry describes procurement as “a system that establishes the roles and relationships which make up a project organisation”; hence the overall organisation and communication structure for the management, administration and control of a project is established by the procurement system. I was raised by my wonderful mother, and God family in Burton, Michigan along with my older brother and sister. My career goal of becoming a physical therapist stemmed from a growth defect I experienced during middle school that my primary doctors simply ignored. It was not until I went to a physical therapist that I was given a chance to get the medical care I needed that led to a corrective surgery. Once I was healed, I continued playing sports as my family instilled a love for athletics that will never go away. A drive that pushed me through my 14 year soccer career that was a large factor in who I am today. These experiences gave me a form of discipline that has carried into my college career which began at Adrian College, but an injury I suffered during my senior year in high school ended my time on the field, and my inability to play soccer at Adrian College.
They meet for open discussions using education, advocacy, and collaboration to further their mission in designing, carrying-out, and managing security protection programs in different kinds of healthcare settings and organizations (HIMSS & Society, 2010). Some of the members involved in the discussions include students, various stakeholders, healthcare professionals, physicians, consultants, IT vendors, and anyone else who is interested in the health IT industry (HIMSS & Society, 2010).
In college I will major in biology and earn a bachelor's degree, technically you don't need a premed major as long as you complete science course classes. I chose to major in biology because from recent studies, majoring in biology is a good choice to be ahead of the game. My career goal is to be a pediatrician, in order to do so I must complete a total of 11 years after high school. That is 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and 3 years of residency. The medical school will get me a medical degree, and I will learn basic medical sciences, clinical sciences then comes hands on.
My career goal has remained essentially the same since baking a brain shaped candy cake for my 10th grade psychology class. There have been many things that have shaped that goal into the specific path I have chosen since then. Prior to 10th grade, my career path was much less defined. I had the ideals I learned from my family, and a general idea of how I wanted to live, or more accurately, how I didn’t want to live. Early on, I had learned that one’s career is a huge part of what makes up one’s lifestyle.
Hi, I am Leanna and this is my second year at BCC. I am not sure yet on what I want to major in or what type of career I would like to pursue in. I am leaning towards psychology or nursing. However, I really enjoy history, mostly ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology. Right now, I am just taking several GED classes that relate to psychology, nursing, and history. Family, reading books, and watching movies are very important to me. Friends always seem to come and go, but my large family has always been a constant. I love to read and watch movies because they allow me to escape the pressures of the outside world for a few hours. I decided to take this class because I realized I do not know much about other religions except for the one I was raised
The current United States economy, more specifically the housing market, has had great affects on the construction industry with unemployment currently floating around 30%. Canadian Chemical, a global provider of better quality products and services is one of the many commercial construction companies that are experiencing problems. More construction companies are following a, “the low bidder gets the job,” mentality versus providing true quality products and customer service, which in return results in a company like Canadian Chemical to lose sales. TJ Wood who is the Vice President of Sales for Canadian Chemical understands the dilemma and is unsure how to better generate sales for the company. After reviewing the sales representatives, products being sold, selling expenses, and the income statement it is evident changes need to be made in order to remain relevant as a top seller in the industry.
It is my firm belief that if you are not passionate about your choices than you will not succeed in life. That has been my motto throughout life. I have witnessed many success stories in my life, especially in my family. Currently there are 3 pharmacists, 2 doctors, a nurse, and a computer scientist in my family, all of whom are happy with their career choices. I on the other hand, have found my calling in the form of helping the people in my community. With my community service background I felt that it was my duty to help needy families.
My whole life, there has always been one thing on my mind. That one thing that has always been soaring through my years of education is working hard to achieve a successful life. My parents were so proud of my eagerness for education and finding a career that fit my path. Since elementary I have been working hard on finding this path, what career I wanted, and how I would spend my life. I wanted a career that could provide me a decent house, provide me the ability to take care of my future family, and of course a career that I loved. I decided this career when I was 9, I chose nursing. My mind is set, my goal is to get through high-school, well educated, and ready for college. I will do anything to acquire my college degree.
There was a point in my life where I felt like I had nothing. I had been kicked out, had no job, and wasn’t even sure if I wanted to attend college. Even though I struggled, through determination and hard work, I excelled far above what could’ve been expected and threw myself into photography and journalism. An insurmountable amount of effort has gone into the career I’ve always wished for . Soon, my career is going to change my life and others. My career is going to enable me to practice my craft and do what I am passionate about professionally. The general public will become better informed as I will strive to always share the truth. Thought provoking and unique content is the only thing I plan on putting out..
Everyone has a story behind who they are as a person and how it affected them throughout their life. When my Grandpa passed away it affected me greatly because he was there for me through the good times and the bad times. For example, when I broke my bike by popping the chain off it made me very sad but he helped me fix it. Another time was when I got good grades in school he was very happy and took me out for ice cream to celebrate my success. He also taught me the importance of exercising and how it leads to a healthier life style. My grandfather is the reason that I am seeking a career in computer engineering.
Five years ago, I was a young teenage boy who had no idea what he wanted to do. Now, I am a young adult who is still a little lost. Over this time, it is hard to pick what has changed because so much is different about me. At the age of thirteen, I started realizing that some of my crazy career goals for the future were not going to happen, such as being an NHL player or playing in the NBA. I started focusing on academic goals, and I wanted to become a lawyer or an accountant. There has been a great number of different career paths I wanted to follow in the last 5 years. Now I think I have it figured out, I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, which is something I really enjoy.
“This exhibition the transformation industrial modes of production. We’ve been looking at how practices of labour and the organization of labour have changed with those transformations.” (12) Ibghy and Lemmens have developed a collaborative practice that combines a concise approach to the form and construction of the art object with the desire to make ideas visible. (13) Artistic practices represent a field of work where a lot of the characteristics that began to emerge in post-industrial production were present beforehand with the emphasis on collaboration, creativity, and self-motivation.
One thing I want to accomplish, is finishing school because I want to have a good paying job. I want to finish school because I can get many job opportunities that can be good paying or high paying. To get a job you want you need to take classes for the job. First I need to take classes for the job. Then I need to get the proper training for the job because it is recommended to know what to do. In addition these are reasons to get a job. In conclusion I plan to get to finish school to get a job.
The construction industry much like other industries is dependant with the distribution of “scarce resources” (Drake,1994). Many of its resources known as the factors or production i.e. labour, capital, land etc. are limited (Gregory-Mankiw, 2008), however, wants and desires within the industry are infinite (Myers, 2013). Kishtainy notes that this creates two problems; at any given time, there will be a fixed number of resource, against numerous wants. Sloman 2003 adds that in an effort to rectify this, he argues that we must make choices, in terms of choices within the construction industry Myers suggested that firms need to considered their investments made, how they construct and for whom they construct for.
