I discovered and learned many things about my image, one highlight were the importance of heavy guns such as the 15-inch howitzer and artillery in WW1. The essential need to advance technology and adapt to it was a must in order to keep up with the enemies or a way to win a war. Having units do specific duties ordered to them is important to be efficient and have experienced soldiers know what to do, such as the RMA. These are things that I learned from researching about my image.
Artillery in WW1 was a prerequisite for trench warfare and battle success. Artillery was key to counter trench warfare by firing upon enemy trenches, fortifications, and lessening enemy troops. Using Artillery gave the ability to armies striking enemies without directly facing them, it also can indirectly destroy barbed wire. Not only artillery affected enemies physically were their mentality. Imagine that you were a soldier, crossing no

A bigger howitzer was ought to be better than the smaller 9.2-inch howitzer since it was supersized. This was not the case, although it done its job of destroying deep enemy fortifications and had more explosive shells, the labor and time it took was not worth it. Thus, only twelve 15-inch howitzer was made and not mass produced. The size of the 15-inch howitzer made it difficult to transport and emplace, it weighed over 94 tons and took lots of labor to transport the pieces. This relates to advancing technology by developing the 9.2-inch howitzer into the 15-inch howitzer, the British thought it could be impactful in the battlefield, unfortunately the cons weighed the pros. British adapted to the fact to technology that could have a bigger impact or benefits outweighing the cons would be mass produced. Even though the 15-inch howitzer was bigger and had more powerful explosive shells, the 9.2 inch howitzer were to be better use mass
The Korean peninsula has had a long history of turmoil, miring the country in wars and disputes. Due to growing tensions in the region around the mid-1900s, it would soon become necessary for America to step in to assist in resolving conflict. The Air Defense Artillery (ADA), or the Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) during the Korean War, played a major role in supporting the war effort during the Korean War. The AAA played an important role leading up to the war, during the war, and the lessons learned from the war assisted in building the branch for the future.
The new weapons used in WW1 included: The Rifle used by every country involved in the war, The machine gun, Gas bombs which included chlorine in the early stages of the war then mustard gas in the later stages of the war, Flamethrowers, a Zeppelin or blimp which was a massive aircraft used by the Germans, Tanks 1st used in the battle of Somme, Planes which could dispense bullets at an incredible rate, drop bombs and even support a cannon, and submarines with torpedoes, to make easy pickings on the biggest ships. The rifle, machine gun, and the airplane were invented before WW1 but were upgraded into war machines that were devastating for soldiers.
Weapons in WW1 could decide who would win and who would lose. Newer weapons were brought into the War constantly as they were the most efficient in destroying and making other weapons useless. Making them more powerful for this reason making the death count rise double- time, however, not for long…
Another dynamic change of World War I on Artillery was Unit mobility. Horse drawn Artillery being the primary method of movement used by the American Artillery at the start of the War, quickly changed with the addition of self-propelled weapons and Artillery tractors. The creation of tanks as a countermeasure to trench warfare would be one of many factors to shift emphasis away from the coast. Using tractors as opposed to horses would allow greater range in American Artillery movements. These designs and innovations would help shape the American Artillery weaponry used in later American conflicts around the globe.
Trench warfare was adopted to maintain an area of land, to prevent the enemy from capturing that land. The importance of this investigation was to show the significance of trench warfare during the First World War and how effective it was on how it had prevented many full on, front lined, assaults. World War I could have had a great impact in history with the amount of war casualties, which would have been historically shocking, but instead it created the stalemate, which prevented such numbers of deaths from happening.
The United States Army is over 240 years old, and for every war the Army has been in, field artillery has played an essential role. The artillery and infantry have always worked hand in hand, a requirement if fire support is to be in direct support of maneuver. Artillery preps and shapes the battlefield; setting the conditions for battle. Throughout the conflict in Vietnam, specifically the Battle at LZ Gold, the Army made essential changes and improvements to the tactics, techniques and weaponry of field artillery to meet the ever-changing demands of battle.
The most common weapon used in the trenches by the British were rifles. The rifles that the British used were robust and were ideal for the harsh conditions in the trenches. This rifle was called the bold action rifle which could fire 15 rounds per minute and could kill a person from 1400 meters away. Machine guns in WW1 needed approximately 4-6 men to work it, they also had to be on a flat surface. The machine guns had roughly the firepower of 100 guns. The artillery
World War 1 also known as the Great War (1914-1918) started due to the assassination of the Hungary-Austria archduke Franz Ferdinand. The war was fought mainly on the “Western Front”. and was a war fought only by industrialized countries such as the UK and France. This war had a strong effect on technological advancement of the world as new inventions kept needing to be created to stop the stalemate between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. This essay will use source material to outline how the nature of trench warfare in particular affected these soldiers in a significant and long-term way.
In 1775, thirteen colonies began a fight for their independence from Britain’s rule. Without formal training in artillery tactics or a proper armament of artillery pieces, early units had to overcome adversity and hardship. But with courage and dedication the artillery and its leadership were able to play a vital role in the success on the battlefields, and ultimately the victory resulting in America earning its freedom.
Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the world’s greatest military strategists, led the French at the Battle of Waterloo. During his time as a General, even in defeat, his tactics in the way he used artillery were beyond reproach. His successes and errors made throughout the Battle of Waterloo had a direct effect on how we use artillery today.
Light machine guns and sub-machine guns were invented during World War I as small arms, but the larger machine guns were modernized as well. Flame throwers were used as an offensive attack against trench warfare.[ix],[x]
There was a 17% difference in casualties from the Napoleonic Wars to World War I. This can be credited mainly to the new weapons. There were many different weapons in World War I, whether they were completely new or just variations and improvements of previous weapons. Some of the new weapons included machine guns, mustard gas, Zeppelins, and planes, while some of the improved weapons included the bolt-action rifle, the Howitzer, and pistols. The innovative new weapons that were introduced in World War I have forever changed the way wars were fought.
With World War I being the first modern war, armies could do nothing more than dig trenches in defense. What made World War I the first modern war is all the new technologies that came with it. Technologies like gas masks, powered flight, and U-boats affected the war in a major way. During the war, both sides used poison gas against their enemies. The gas could destroy organs, cause blisters, or even kill the soldiers. Gas masks filtered the air to help keep soldiers protected from the gas. At first, aircrafts were used for spotting enemy positions, however, as the war went on they became used for bombing and fighting. Lastly, German submarines called U-boats were used to sink supply ships and later used to sink Allied and neutral ships.
American army officer Omar Bradley once said,“If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.” The meaning of this quote lies in the destruction and devastation of humanity and geography during war. If we do not stop advancing in ways of killing and causing suffering, we will soon face the consequences of these technologies. Throughout World War I and World War II, there was a ginormous technological boom in which countries were competing to invent new weapons or vehicles used in warfare. Specifically, World War I could be blamed for the start of the creating of new technologies used in warfare even today. These technologies were often invented or created during World War I,
The first world war was one of the most brutal and remorseless events in history; ‘the global conflict that defined a century’. Over nine million soldiers and a large amount of innocent civilians lost their lives. Empires crumbled, revolution engulfed Russia and America rose to become a dominant world power. Huge armies deployed new weapons of devastating effect from rifles and pistols to torpedoes and flame throwers. These weapons were used not only in the trenches but by tanks too. This was an advantage to those who were able to access such machinery as they could easily launch bullets and missiles at nearby enemy bases. The downfall of the tank was the fact it was unable to cross the trenches. Tanks were not the only pieces of equipment that could access this machinery but U boats and planes too. The British carried ‘bolt action rifles’ in which fired 15 rounds per minute at a minimum range of 1,400 metres away. This allowed the British to take out foes at a far greater range. By using machinery in which rules out the need for getting up close to the enemy was a great advantage during world war one. Soldiers ran from trench to trench attacking with all that they had. This resulted in a massacre as the soldiers running toward the trenches were shot down. Machinery such as machine guns and heavy artillery were the weapons used in the trenches. In modern day society, machine guns are the main weapons used by soldiers. This wasn’t the case around the 1914s. They took four
