The Importance of Arts Education Joining the orchestra program at Alexander Graham Middle School in the sixth grade has changed my life drastically in ways I could have never foreseen. Music is my comfort and my motivator; orchestra and marching band are often the things I look forward to most in my day, because they give me a time to explore things I’m passionate about. I’m not the only one who feels this way; I know plenty of other people in the performing arts department at Myers Park who feel very appreciative and glad to have such a great resource at their fingertips. The College Board did a study in 2012 that showed arts students’ SAT scores on average were 91 points higher than those of non-arts students. “Data from The College Board shows that students who take four years of arts and music classes while in high school on average score about 100 points better on their SATs than students who took one half-year or less. Additionally, those who had more than four years of arts and music scored 105 points more than those who had only a half-year or less of arts instruction” (Americans). Arts education also helps motivate students to stay in school and out of trouble. According to an article by Law Street Media, “Art classes are beneficial for students in many ways, but especially for children who are low-income and live in impoverished neighborhoods. Art programs can keep at-risk youth off the streets, and, consequently, away from correctional institutions. Not only can art programs provide incentives for these children to stay in school, but it can also improve their academic performance, including reading and math. At-risk students with a history of art involvement have higher college enrollment rates than their at-risk peers who didn’t pursue art education. They are three times more likely to earn Bachelor’s degrees than their peers. Students who didn’t take art classes are five times more likely to drop out of school before graduation. Art can help disadvantaged children to realize their full potential as it provides a safe harbor for those students who may lack a supportive environment at home” (Metla).
