As Good As It Gets: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder I chose the film “As Good As It Gets” and to focus on the character Melvin. Melvin displays many different behaviors throughout the movie such as anti-Semitic, narcissistic character, mysophobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. I will be focusing on the cause and effect of Melvin’s dysfunction to do with his OCD. We will examine the character in the movie and explain the assessment, symptoms, diagnosis, causes, and treatments. “As Good as It Gets” (1997), is a romantic comedy about Melvin Udall (played by Jack Nicholson) who displays Obsessive – Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Melvin Udall is the main character in the film, and is depicted as a middle aged single man who lives alone in an apartment in New York, He works from home as an author and appears to be not only successful but intelligent as well. Although Melvin has no friends or visitors, and really doesn’t interact with very many people, unless out of need like his psychiatrists or publisher. Melvin is meticulously organized, his things are organized by color, quantity, and type. When in public he wears gloves and will not touch anything without them, and never uses the same pair of gloves twice. He clearly does not want to be touched or to touch anything in fear of contamination from germs He avoids walking on cracks in sidewalks, and will go around any pattern of sidewalk like cobblestone.
