I believe that the government should remove GMO’s and all genetically modified products off the market. A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. Even though they are beneficial, they cause a lot of bad side effects. Some of the effects are harmful to environment and to human beings. The effects of GMOs can affect us long term if we don’t handle it now. I believe that GMOs were created for one reason which is to profit agriculture businesses. After the pigs were slaughtered an autopsy was done. The uterus of the female pigs that were given the genetically modified feed had grown over 25% in weight. They also had more gestational problems and inflammation of the stomach and small intestines. Pigs were the animals of choice because they have similar digestive systems to humans. Humans also end up eating these pigs which leads to many health problems. Genetically modified organisms also have the potential to cause allergies. According to the Food Allergy Research and Education 15 million Americans have food allergies. These examples prove that Genetically Modified Organisms are not good for the body and cause nothing but harm. The only benefit is the increase in money in the food industry’s pocket. Furthermore GMO’s also cause a lot of issues for the environment. These crops and their herbicides can harm birds, insects, marine life, and soil organisms. They pollute water and the environment. Most genetically modified crops are herbicide tolerant which means that farmers are able to use herbicides to control the growth of weeds and not damage their own crops. Between 1996 and 2009 US farmers have used 283 million pounds of herbicide. Round up is actually the biggest seller. This creates weeds that are resistant to herbicide and causing farmers to use even more toxic chemicals every year. Therefore GM foods contain residue of toxic
