Upon coming across my decision on what my paper would be about, it was very evident that I would be discussing the Asian cuisine, due to me often watching a clips on YouTube of them eating live octopus, squid or fish. It amazes me to see some of the things they eat and how they eat it. In their tradition, it is polite to slurp your food while eating. It lets the chef know you are enjoying it or they prepared it just right. Food is very important to them, when they are walking on the street often before going into conversation, they may ask the person “Have you eaten today?”, that is equivalent to our American traditional question when starting a conversation, “How are you doing.”
Cooking is one of the oldest of human

This eventually led to the creation of uniquely 'Americanized ' Asian dishes such as chop suey, egg rolls, fortune cookies, and recently, 'Asian-inspired ' fast food salads. These days, traditional Asian cuisine is undergoing another transformation but instead of being combined with
Food and cuisine is one of the most important and influential aspects of how a country's culture is shaped and by looking at how this has been accomplished, it is clear to see direct links between dishes and aspects of Japanese and Australian Culture. REFERENE By researching a meal from each country, Okonomiyaki and Damper, connections are made and analysed between identity, culture and the communication.
The only thing I can find was a men name Li Hung Chang who had influenced the making of chop suey. I chose this because as I said before I love food and it still fascinates of how we went from eating with hands to putting food on a plate to putting in can. At the time it was first sold in America, a new act was pass it was called the Chinese Exclusion Act, which stopped newly immigrants from coming. During the time people were afraid that the Chinese were going to overpopulate American do to the mass amount of migration from Asia, what’s surprising is that even when they are afraid that the Chinese were going to overpopulate the area they are still eating Chinese food. The chop suey in a can shows how American has accepted Chinese
White American women viewed Thai food as a quick getaway for viewing the Thai culture as they made variations labeled as Siamese (Padoongpatt 21). This relates to the argument because Thai cuisine was able to create a false sense of cultural knowledge; much like how people will claim orange chicken is their favorite Chinese dish, they are both things that White Americans claim makes them more multicultural. This leads into Padoongpatt’s next major point of changing geography. During the 1960 and 70’s, an influx of Thais decided to come into the United States, legally and illegally, with it came the uprising of both domestic access to Thai ingredients and Thai restaurants. This brought forth the fanfare of White Americans falling in love with the Thai people through their culinary treasures presented in their aesthetically traditional restaurants (Padoongpatt). This phenomenon can be attributed to the liberal multiculturalism found in the Los Angeles area because only through Thai cuisine was Thai America able to gain
The Melting Pot on the Plate: Exploring the Influence of Vietnamese Food Pathways in American Cuisine. Thesis: The Gravy podcast episode "The Birth of Vietnamese America" sheds light on the profound impact of Vietnamese food pathways on American culinary traditions. Through an exploration of dishes like pho and banh mi, the episode illustrates how Vietnamese cuisine has become deeply integrated into the fabric of American food culture, serving as a symbol of cultural diversity, culinary innovation, and resilience. In the Gravy podcast episode "The Birth of Vietnamese America," the narrative looks into the migration of Vietnamese refugees to the United States following the Vietnam War and their subsequent culinary contributions to American
The imbalance between original Chinese cuisine and adapted Chinese American cuisine is also reflected in Chinese immigrant families with American born children, where “parents are convinced that their own ways are the best recipe for success and constantly worry that their children are becoming too Americanized too soon” (Zhou 188). People describe American Born Chinese as bananas because they share similar characteristics, yellow on the outside but white on the inside. Similarly, Panda Express is also a banana, a restaurant providing Chinese food with American adaptations in American society. Many people accused that orange chicken is not authentic Chinese food; however, what is authentic Chinese food? Food is always the best representative of a culture; but for China, there is no absolute definition of
When watching the movie, “Eat Drink Man Woman”, I was able to learn a lot about the Chinese culture and the food that they eat. Even though all the food that was prepared in the film was high end cuisine, I was still able to get a glimpse of what it had to offer. When a lot of Americans think of Chinese food, they tend to think strictly about American Chinese food, and that is not the case. Many meals were prepared in the film that ranged from elegant soups, chicken, duck, and fish, to fancy dumplings, and desserts. The film was able to show me a lot of what the food they eat looks like, even if it was five star meals, and had a great storyline to back it up.
The Vietnamese immigrant’s cuisine mainly consists of rice, noodles, tofu, fish, pork, chicken, vegetables, and vegetable oil. Rice is always involved in any of the daily meals. Green tea, jasmine tea, and pure water are the daily drinks. In daily meals, a pair of chopsticks is always an indispensable tool with most of Orient. It takes the role of a fork in the cuisine Western. Among the Vietnamese immigrant’s cuisines in the United States, noodle soup has become the highlight of Vietnamese culture. In noodle soup, white rice noodles come together with sliced rare beef or chicken, meatballs, and brisket. The broth for noodle soup is practically made by boiling beef bones, white onion and herbs, such as cinnamon, ginger, fennel seed, clove, star anise, etc., Customers are served noodle soup with jalapeno, basil, bean sprouts, and lemon. In South Sacramento, among plenty of Vietnamese restaurants, there are dozens of noodle soup restaurants concentrated in the Little Saigon Supermarket and neighborhoods. Some restaurants are Huong Lan, Thanh Huong, King, Pho Bac Hoa Viet, Pho Garden, Pho Anh Dao, Bon Mua, Ho Tay, etc. Vietnamese cuisine has become a popular choice of food, for both those who have immigrated to the United States and those born in the United States. It has enriched the American

In an article written by Amy S. Choi entitled, “What Americans can Learn From Other Food Cultures,” Choi discusses food in ways that pertain to ones culture. Today, our younger generation has become less thankful for simple, traditional foods and more wanting of foods prepared in less traditional ways, almost as if, “the more outlandish the better.” Choi mentioned in her article that, “those slightly younger have been the beneficiaries of the restaurant culture exploding in Shanghai” (Choi, Amy. “What Americans Can Learn From Other Food Cultures.” Ideastedcom. 18 Dec. 2014. Web. 17 June 2015) being from America I agree with her statement. Food in many cultures has become a status symbol; I believe that dining in expensive restaurants that serve
As I contemplated on what my cultural plunge was going to be, it made me realize that I am lucky to say that I have been exposed and acquainted with maybe more than the usual. My ex-husband is Middle Eastern, I am Mexican, and I have homo-sexual friends, and have and had friends that are African-American, Caucasian, Japanese, Filipino, Jewish, and Korean. I finally chose to explore more of the Asian culture because although I have friends that are Asian I liked to know more about their culture. Being that I love to cook, I decided to go to an Asian market. As I searched the internet for suggestions on where to go, I found 99 Ranch Market to have the highest ratings. 99 Ranch Market is an Asian
In the great big world we live in there are several different countries that have their own cultures and civilizations. Within a country’s culture they have certain traditions and behaviors. All around the world traditions usually include something to do with food. In this research paper I will discuss information about Korea and some of its culinary customs.
There are specific foods that are reoccurring in the cultural foods in japan; Rice is one of
Tally Thai is located at the heart of Pensacola street and will satisfy any person who craves Thai food in the comfort of their city. Along with the fresh seafood for sushi, Tally Thai has a vest menu of items, with everything from tasty noodles to miso soup and ginger salad. As an individual who barely eats sushi, or food from Thailand in general, my roommates recommended that we eat at Tally Thai for this assignment. The menu, like most traditional places, is organized to easily understand. Beginning with traditional appetizers, this four page menu continues with soups, salads, then entrees. To my surprise, the third page listed Thai appetizers, entrees, and sushi rolls, which I found to be more conventional to culture in Thailand; with this, the menu ended on desserts and drinks, as most restaurants do. There is no question that the menu is, without a doubt, not authentic- instead it is Americanized. If it were traditional, the rolls, especially, would not have been in english. With basic names such as ‘Philadelphia Roll’ and ‘Gator Roll’, it is clear to see the menu works with the environment around it; being in a college town, most students would not be able to understand names of entrees in a different language. Exemplarily, dishes such as the curry duck would be called “แกงเป็ด” in this culture. Not Americanizing this menu would make it impossible for individuals to order. A few entrees on the menu do, however, represent Thai culture. Meals such as the masamun curry
There are different foods from different countries around the world. The different elements are noticeable in our foods. Chinese dishes are prominent and it is the ultimate food. People have different tastes in food though many people appreciate Chinese’s. It is famous for color, appearance, taste, aroma, and meaning. Around the bay area there are many Chinese restaurants. My family is Chinese, so Chinese food are something we eat almost every day. Even though I eat Chinese food every day, I still don’t get bored with it. My favorite Chinese foods are sweet and sour pork and fried rice. Sweet and sour pork is my favorite because of the sauce and fried rice because of its taste and it is simple to make when I have to make my food; both foods are the traditional dishes may be found all over the world.
For many people in Thailand today, food has become a very important aspect of any holiday celebration and special occasions. In the American western cuisine today, a regular restaurant quality meal consists of appetizers, followed by the main course, and ends with a serving of dessert, where each person would order his or her own food. In Thailand it’s the complete opposite to the American cuisine where they would never have any structure in their meals like beginning with appetizers and ending with dessert. In Thai cuisine the number of dishes is based on the number of people there are around the table, so for example if there are ten people, then ten dishes would be order. One interesting aspect about Thai cuisine is that everyone sitting around the table would equally share their food, so that no one would get stuck with eating the same plate of food, everyone gets the opportunity to enjoy the unique flavors of all the different dishes. The main reason that the Thais share their food is because they believe that it is bad luck for them to eat alone and they see that each meal is a big celebration of social and friendly interactions.
