Aspartame has been known as one of the most famous sweeteners and additives to food. Since its discovery in 1965-1969, it has now been developed into a commercial product in which several products use it to enhance its sweetness and taste. Because of this, it has also been a very prosperous commercial product where its company developers get much profit on. Nonetheless, it has been the subject of issue and controversy. Several reports and studies rebuke the suitability of it being a food product stating that it is more known as a poison. Since sugar prices are volatile and rising, manufacturers can substitute a small bit or part of its sugar using aspartame. This lowers down the production cost and the capital. Also the price for high-fructose corn-syrup, which is known to be an economical substitute for sugar has also been going up. Because of this, aspartame now acts as a sugar substitute at a cheaper price and it can be made available to the companies at a lower cost (Ajinomoto food ingredients, 2011 para. 2-3). This will then induce more profit for the food companies. Also, since aspartame has a taste stronger to sugar, a small amount of it can already be utilized to match natural sugar taste therefore this can result to lower cost per usage (Ajinomoto, para. 4).
