News Analysis Assignment #1: Aggressive Mimicry in Assassin Bugs The news article I have chosen is titled “Assassin bug lures spiders by mimicking prey”1. In this article, author Mark Kniver states that researchers observed assassin bugs (Stenolemus bituberus) preying on spiders by mimicking prey trapped in a web through a behavior called “aggressive mimicry”1. Stenolemus bituberus will first disturb one of the strands of a spider’s web, tricking the spider into thinking that it has caught a bug. As the spider approaches the source of the disturbance, the assassin bug thrusts forward with its beak, and stabs the spider1. Another observed strategy that Stenolemus bituberus uses to catch its prey is through careful “stalking” of the spiders, …show more content…
When examining the frequency and duration of the web vibrations being produced by Stenolemus bituberus and the prey, the researchers observed that the assassin bugs created web vibrations similar to the low-amplitude web movements generated by exhausted prey. Additionally, the researchers found that the assassin bugs never generated the distinctive vibration caused by prey landing on the web, nor did they create the high amplitude long duration web vibrations caused by the wing beats of struggling prey2. They also found that prey continuously generated high amplitude vibrations as they struggled in the web, while the leaf only generated one large wavelength from its initial impact2.The researchers also found that the spiders generally had no response to the leaf, and that the female spiders responded to the vibrations of the courting male by assuming a copulatory stance2. However, the courting male spiders generated a repeated web vibration not observed from the other forms web stimuli, suggesting a method by which female spiders discriminate courting male spiders from the other web
The subject of the book “The Midnight Assassin” by Skip Hollandsworth is focused on uncovering the truth behind who is truly at fault for the murders of Mollie Smith and, several other victims. The murders occurred in Austin, Texas during the 19th century. Based on the first three chapters, three prominent characters have been introduced. All three characters are currently prime suspects. At the time, Austin was a prestigious town, equipped with the finest law enforcement made first hand by god himself, the Texas Rangers. When the young yellow skinned slave Mollie Smith was murdered, terror truly struck Austin. News reporters from all over Texas came to cover the story, thus creating conspiracies about each suspect. Evaluation of each suspect and their motives to perpetrate such a gruesome murder-Walter Spencer, a hardworking slave, who had never done any harm; Tom Chalmers, the brother of the land owner where the murder took place; Lastly, Dr. Ralph Steiner, the esteemed doctor.
The United Kingdom born writer Kristy Mckay was inspired by many things to write “The Assassin Game”. Kristy Mckay was inspired by others writing involving a same situation in their novel, but she just wasn't receiving the excitement and suspense in their writing. Mckay proceeded to then write her own novel that she knew she would be able to incorporate her own twist and style. Mckay knew of others books alike to the boarding school scenario but, choose the proceed with her idea in hopes of creating a better sequence of events during the book.
In The Small Assassin, Alice creates a baby with David that continuously brings them constant fear. Alice claims that this baby is out to kill her. She tries to convince David and Doctor Jeffers that this is truly happening, but no one completely believes her until someone gets hurt because of it. Between The Small Assassin short story, and film, there are many things alike, but many differences also appear throughout both.
During the experiment, the scientists also observed that the wasps generated unique sounds depending on what activity they were doing at the time. Because of this information, the following statement was made by a student.
Tarantulaś are harmless to humans even though their hairy bodies give humans the creeps. Tarantula comes from a town called Taranto Italy. The kingdom for a tarantula is called animalia because a tarantula is a heterotrophic that motile during one stage life. Phylum of a tarantula is arthropoda because it has jointed appendages, a chitinous exoskeleton, and a segmented body. The class that the tarantula belongs to is arachnida which also belongs to the subphylum chelicerata. Tarantula has eight legs and 2 more appendages that are used for sensory adaptations, feeding, and able to move. The order for the tarantula is araneae which have 4 pairs of legs, no antennae, and two body parts.
The common terrestrial inhabitant known as the isopod, pillbug, or roly poly, mostly uses chemical and tactile communication to determine its behavior. In fact, one antenna is a chemoreceptor
The texts “Eat Your Bugs” by Miguel Vilar and Laura Allen and “Insect Farmers...” by The Washington Post have both similarity and difference.
Redback spiders can be found in Australia, and normally, they will eat a variety of food sources ranging from small rodents, insects, and spiders. However, when engage in sexual activity, the females will consume the males. The females are bigger than the males, according to Stoltz and Andrade (2009) the males are only 1 or 2 % of the female body. It is extremely difficult for the males to find females for copulation, the chances are slim, so when a male finds a female, most males are willing to die for her. Sexual cannibalism in redback spiders is extremely interesting because the males can use chemical cues to detect virgin females, females are in control of the situation, and males offer themselves to females for longer copulation.
A photo of a spider looking like an upturned dish is able to easily camouflage itself in a twig. The photo of Wrap-around Spider shared on a famous information portal has prompted several nervous reactions.

Requiescat en pace; this phrase is Latin for Rest in Peace. During the 14th and 15th century many assassins used this when sending their brothers to the afterlife. Now imagine in modern society assassins existed. They would be silent deadly and virtually unrecognizable. Now starting in the 21st century assassins live in the shadows. They live, breathe, and die to protect the Apple of Eden, the Brotherhood, the Creed, and ultimately destroy the Templars.
I recently bought a black haired desert spider as a pet, the first thing i did with it was get it’s poison gland removed.
Batesian mimicry is a form of mimicry where a relatively innocuous organism mimics another organism: one that its own predators avoid because it is poisonous or otherwise unpalatable (Ruxton 2004). There is selection pressure on the harmless organism to become a closer and closer replica of its venomous model and yet, in nature, no model is quite perfect (in fact, some are poor approximations, such as the scarlet kingsnake’s cobbled-together costume of the vastly more venomous coral snake). Yet we find even these poor mimics have effectively reduced their species’ mortality due to predation, at least, in areas where they live sympatrically with their model (Pfennig 2001). Why should poor mimicry be rewarded with success, and why doesn’t there
All of the data collected from the surveys was used to give us percentage and numerical values of people’s opinions about, and participation in, The Assassin’s Challenge. The values we collected are not representative of the entire high school, but only of the portion that either 1) registered for the Assassin’s Challenge or 2) responded to the surveys in general. With that said, the data from the registration survey was used as the basis for determining and proving whether or not our project “tipped.” We determined our tipping based on participation. The number of people that participated is shown in the Registration Survey portion of our data where we had a total of 112 responses, therefore meaning that 112 people registered to be an Assassin
