Case Study Application: L.B. Jensen Middle School 1. What is meant by the following terms: adequacy, equality, equitable, human capital, quality?
Within the case study, all of the terms mentioned seem to directly apply to the student population, and what a school should be offering them. Also, is describes the qualities the leaderships members need to keep in mind. Everything is to be done for the betterment of the students, and these terms are there to justify that thought. Budgeting should be done with thoughts of the students at hand. All students are to be offered an equal, quality and fair opportunity at an education and these terms correlate with that. Another example is that our school recently received a grant from the State of Ohio Department of Education to roll an Adult 22+ program out. The school understands the value of the students and the quality of education they have obtained, so they worked hard to get this program within our school. Now, those above 22, who have previously aged out, are able to enroll in our 22+ program and still gain their diploma. This is giving those individuals who have finally realized the importance, the chance to make a difference and we at QDA realize this. The funding from the grant will not fully cover this program, but we as a school understand the value.
The expense for these programs is just something that we know we need to budget for because the outcome is much greater. This is producing more, productive members to contribute to society. 3. Can educational services and funding be provided with equality and equity? Support your answer.
I think that this is possible, but only if the person in the leadership role understands the difference between the two. Equity, “involves trying to understand and give people what they need to enjoy full, healthy lives” while equality, “aims to promote fairness and justice, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs the same things” (Clow, Hanson, & Bernier, 2015, p. 1).
