Assignment 2: A Separate Communication

Billie, I love when people who are communicating information to people are clear and direct with what they want to say. It seems like your former boss was a great communicator and knew what she was doing. There is a fine line between being a good boss and a bad one, and I feel communication is a huge part in that. The fact that she kept in contact with you goes to show that her communication skills are still great.

I demonstrated the skills in explaining the purpose of the meeting from the 0:14 to the 0:50 second marks. The skills demonstrated in this segment were explaining the purpose of our meeting and discussing confidentiality, thus these are important skills to explain in the first meeting (Chang at el.,2013).

Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to educate and inform my audience of the risks inherent from unintended hypothermia. I’m eager to alert perioperative staff of the potential dangers as well as the preventative measures that can be taken in order to avoid complications associated with unintended hypothermia. My central idea is hypothermia management saves lives.

Effective communication is important as verbal interaction is needed to integrate as this allows people to hear tone of voice, see their body language, and whether or not they maintain eye contact. All of these things help us to see if what has been said to someone or asked whether or not it has been understood or respected. Also, a person’s body language and eye contact can tell us how they feel about us when we ask them to do something. Our style of speech needs to be adjusted depending upon the age of the person we are talking to, as we can’t talk to adults as we would children as this would be seen as disrespectful. While the messages are being transmitted, the sender examines the stream of returning acknowledgments. If it receives an NAK, the sender retransmits the needed messages. Chapter 8 is about communicating nonverbally, one concept that I believe i'm good at applying to my life is body movements. I define body movements as using looks, facial expressions, hand gestures and self presentation to express yourself. For example, when someone is talking my body language tells you if i'm interested in what hey are saying or not. If i am interested i sit up straight, i make eye contact and i'm completely focused on them and every word they say. But if i'm not interested, I tend to slouch in my chair, look around the room, think about other things. And if i'm really bored i will continuously play with my hair. Communication within the workplace is vital, and maintaining communication regarding progress is very important. As this can lead to better working relationships, team support, and an effective work practice.

Planning an outing with somebody I don't know very well is rare for me. As the book states, communication is something that everyone can improve upon, therefore meeting with someone you don't know very well is a good way to begin working on individual communication. This exercise will only work when both parties involved know and agree on the meetings purpose. On July 9, 2015 at 8:30 in the morning, Russ and I met at the White Rabbit coffee shop for our communication excursion assignment. I found out these processes can be harder than you think three years ago. My father got remarried and I was forced to become up close and personal with complete strangers, my step family.
