Nursing homes are places for those who are elderly or seeking extra assistance, twenty-four hour medical care and a place where people send their loved ones to gain the reassurance that they’re being taken care of professionally and with care. Nursing homes should be mandated in every community and staffed with caring professionals to ensure that elderly community residents receive the care they need, remain healthy and enjoy a fulfilling life. During the 17th through the 20th centuries, nursing homes as we know them today started out as houses called almshouses which were large, 2 story homes made from brick. Assisted living is similar to a nursing home but is less expensive and unlike nursing homes that are staffed with professional nurses and doctors, assisted living facilities are not, which means that assisted living staff aren’t allowed to administer medications, cover/care for wounds, monitor oxygens, etc, but instead can help patients and residents with changing, bathing and cooking meals (Comparing Assisted living and nursing home care 1). Another difference between assisted living and a nursing home is that assisted living mainly consist of residents who are able to move around and take care of themselves to a certain extent, unlike nursing homes where they consist of patients who are typically immobile and require skilled medical attention on a daily basis. According to a study by “Centers of Disease Control and Prevention” the average percentage of senior citizens that require skilled medical attention (IV monitoring, medications,etc.) on a daily basis has increased from 63.7% to 92.9% of seniors needing medical attention in 2015, which shows that nursing homes are needed everywhere more and are becoming a more popular as the years go on and the need for medical attention towards the elderly…show more content…
Nurses and doctors create relationships with each patient, which is great and very needed by those who may not have any family members available. Many of the activities that occur for residents in a nursing home are dog therapy sessions, where they invite service dogs to the facility to hangout with patients and lift their moods. Nursing homes also often have activities such as birthday parties for residents and outings. Having birthday parties for residents really help, to make them feel special and enjoy a wonderful day on their special day with their family not only their blood relative family but also their peers that become like family in a nursing home. The birthday celebrations and outings also helps residents create bonds with each other and is a fun way to help residents open up about themselves. The outings and field trips that they take nursing home residents on are great opportunities for people to be involved with life outside of the nursing home, and it’s a great way to enjoy some fresh air and helps residents feel free. Activities in a nursing home really help to get residents and staff members connected with one
