Introduction In his work, On the Incarnation of the Word, Athanasius of Alexandria provides a systematic approach to explaining why the Incarnation was needed and how to interpret the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Athanasius seeks to clear up any misconceptions as to why the Son of God needed to humble himself to become man, only to die a humiliating death, that would later be scorned. Athanasius ends with evidence as to the truth of which all Christians celebrate and seek to share with all who will listen. I will explain Athanasius logical approach to the Incarnation by explaining the need for God to respond to man’s sin, the manner in which God brought redemption, and the grace that can now be celebrated. This loving and kind God sought to redeem His creation, as “It was, then, out of the question to leave men to the current of corruption; because this would be unseemly, and unworthy of God’s goodness.” God’s good nature ensured a redemptive response, the Incarnation. Why Incarnation Athanasius explains that God could not forgo men’s punishment, as that would make Him a liar. God gave men the law, with both benefit and punishment. It would be against God’s nature to forgo the consequences that He spoke as law. But God would not redeem mankind with spoken Word, as with the nature of creation, for corrupted nature needed to be healed from within. But why could it not be man to redeem themselves through repentance? Repentance was not an acceptable path to redemption due to its’ limited power. Athanasius argues that repentance is fine for a minor offence, but inadequate to turn men away from the death that they have brought on their own soul. For repentance does not “call men back from what is their nature – it merely stays them from acts of sin.” Men’s nature became subject to the rule of death, and repentance could not change
