Sophia and Lulu practice an insane amount of time every day, and vacations are supposed to be about relaxing and enjoyment. Unless they enjoy practicing instruments that much, I don’t think they should be forced to practice while on vacation as well. From previous readings, we learned that Sophia and Lulu practice for about five hours a day. I don’t think that a couple of days off would cost them all that much; in fact, they probably deserve a few days off. On page 94 of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, we hear Amy’s parent’s opinion on this matter: “I didn’t see why we should miss a day when we were traveling. Even my parents were disapproving. ‘That’s crazy,’ they say, shaking their heads. ‘Let the girls enjoy their vacation…” Reading further, we get an understanding of how difficult it was for the family to have Sophia practice piano. As Mr. David H. Thomas states, “All types of practicers, from compulsive bingers to disciplined regulars, may experience a fresh sense of perspective and clarity about their goals and weaknesses after some time off. The body's repetitive stress injuries have time to heal; the mind can expand and visualize being a better player.” This man plays the clarinet and understands music and the impacts it can have on individuals. He believes that everyone should take a break every so often and take it easy. In the Chau’s case, what better time than to take it during a relaxing family vacation? Sophia and Lulu would enjoy themselves away from home with their families and relish an appropriate rest from their instruments. Clearly, vacations without the kid’s instruments would be more hassle-free and could even help them in the long
