In Greco-Roman Culture, humans imagine the deities of mythology to be and act certain ways, due to the needs they must fill. People invented certain deities for reasons that align with what they needed from them. To examine how a deity has a certain purpose, one must first examine what they are like. Athena and Ares are examples of deities invented for very specific purposes. One must first look at Athena and Ares’ similarities and differences in relation to their characteristics, their sexuality and physical appearances, as well as their different powers and how they are worshipped, to discover why they were created. Athena and Ares share many common characteristics and many differences. One major similarity is that they are both deities who’s realm of power deals with warfare. The difference in this, though, is that Ares is a god of brutal and simple warfare. He is sometimes even known simply as a butcher, and the Greeks did not respect him as much as Athena. Athena, on the contrary, is a goddess of strategic warfare, and is very respected because of it. Another similarity they hold is that they are both children of Zeus, although under very different circumstances. Ares had a normal birth, whereas Athena was born out of Zeus’ skull after Zeus had swallowed Athena’s pregnant mother. Another area where Athena and Ares have similarities is in their physical appearances, however their sexualities differ abundantly. Artists often portray Athena wearing all her armor as if she were preparing for war. She often holds the aegis, her shield, as well as a typical spear. Artists often show Ares as if he is ready for war; sometimes he is shown wearing armor, and other times he is shown naked. In either depiction he usually has a shield on sword with him or nearby. While there may be some similarities in their physical depictions, their sexualities differ greatly. From birth, Athena always remained virgin and pure, like the goddesses Artemis and Hestia. Hephaestus was the only one to ever make a sexual advance toward her. However, Athena remained pure in her integrity and conviction. Ares differs greatly from her because he had multiple sexual partners. He is known to have laid with the goddesses Eos and
Athena Polias, one of the most important roles of Athenian history. She is the daughter of Zeus, the great god of ancient Greece, and Metis. Her birth was unlike any other. Once Zeus discovered that upon Athena’s birth, she would overthrow his power of ancient Greece, he flattered Metis until the opportunity that he could swallow her along with the unborn child. One day, Zeus had been complaining of a headache, and ordered one of the gods to split his head open to discover what had been going on. Once his head was sliced with an axe, Athena appeared fully grown and complete with armour, ready for battle, giving for the name “goddess of war”. Though what seems to be an obscure normal father-daughter relationship, it is believed that Athena

Throughout the ancient Greek time period, there were many myths, including many different gods and goddesses. Many gods shared certain characteristics, while others differed in every way possible. Thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece, there was a strong and handsome war god called Ares who have never surrendered to anyone, except for Athena. Athena was the warrior goddess of wisdom and purity, the small princess and favorite child of Zeus, which gave reason as to why Ares would just fall to his knees before her. Even though most Olympians God and Goddess do not like Ares, Athena always admired Ares because of his battle skills. She, who was at that time still figuring out the ways to help the Achaeans fight the Trojan War, enjoyed sparring with him in order to learn war from him. Athena was the Goddess of Wisdom but not Battle thereby she had trouble during the first few fights, as her mind was spinning with so many thoughts. What is a better way to handle war; being cruel and brutal or to be wise and thoughtful? Athena was reason who fought battles by being smart, while Ares was passion, the brutal god of war kills. To him, fighting need a clear and strong mind. So Ares taught Athena to do that. Then one day, she allowed the warrior nature to consume her, and so she challenged Ares. On top of the Olympus Mountain appeared a woman who wore the most stunning armor, wreathed in snakes. One of her arm carried an enormous shield that revealed the once feared Medusa’s head, in her other hand she held a long sharp sword that a few scratches and dents from the previous fight. Athena is an important goddess who has been given many different attributes by Greek people. She’s known as the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, the arts, military victory, crafts, and skills. Although Athena was known for many attributes, she was mostly known for her skills regarding war. She was said to be the female counterpart of Ares, the god of war, or even superior to him as she would look at the strategy side of war, while Ares was just thirsty for blood. She was described as a fierce and ruthless warrior in the Iliad, and a angry and unforgiving warrior in the Odyssey. As shown in the picture, she was depicted as a goddess holding a spear and an aegis, and wearing a golden helmet and an armour. The armor mentioned before is very important and significant as it is said that she was born wearing an armor. Myth says that one day, Zeus had a big headache and asked Hephaestus, the smith god, to help him. As a result, Hephaestus cracked Zeus’head open, and Athena came out yelling a cry of war, fully grown and wearing an amor. As it is evident, Athena did not have a mother, however, it is believed that Metis, Zeus's first wife, was Athena’s mother. However, Zeus ate her after he heard a prophecy that stated that if a male child was born from Metis, he would be more powerful than Zeus. Zeus did not appreciate the fact that someone would become more powerful than him. As a result, he tricked Metis, and turned her into a fly and swallow her. However, Metis was already pregnant with Athena when Zeus ate her, so she emerged from Zeus’ head. Interestingly, Athena is known as Zeus’ favourite child. He loved her so much that she was the only one who was not punished after Zeus found out about Hera’s plan to take over Zeus’ throne. She is also the only other god, besides Zeus, that is allowed to use his thunderbolt. Additionally, the aegis that she is usually depicted with, was given by Zeus and was made of the skin of a goat that had nurtured him as a child. As shown, Zeus’ relationship with Athena was good, as well as her relationship with most of the other gods. However, there were times where she would collide with other gods. For
In Greek mythology Athena’s historical background or mythical past states that she was a Greek goddess. The way of her birth was from her father Zeus (King of the gods). He consumed Athena’s mother (Mites) in order to avoid her from giving birth to a son who would later “take over his thrown” as it stated in a legendary oracle. Later, Zeus had the need for an axe to strike his head which resulted in Athena being born (Skokou et al. 1). Athena, while screaming for war, jumped out of Zeus’s head fully equipped with an armoured attire including: “a helmet, breastplate, shield, and a spear” (Collins, Chrisler, and Quina 1). When Athena saw her father, she put down her weapons as a sign of respect towards him. From then on, they had a strong father/daughter relationship. (Skokou et al. 1).
