The Atkins Diet: The Atkins Diet is formally known as a low-carbohydrate diet. Proponents of this diet claim that you can lose weight eating as much protein and fat as you want, as long as you avoid foods high in carbs. Like a large majority of the FAD Diets, this specific diet was once said to be “unhealthy”, due to the amount of saturated fat being at such a high level. However, new research had been done and the Atkins Diet, and the level of saturated fat used in this diet is shown to be harmless to the body. Phase 4, the maintenance part of the diet, states that the person undergoing the diet is allowed to eat as many healthy carbs as they wish and they will not regain any unexpected weight. How does the diet work biochemically? Insulin is one extremely important hormone that is in the body. The Atkins Diet gives a better control over insulin and blood sugar (glucose) spikes. The Atkins diet is often known to put your body in a state of ketosis. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process, that happens within the body. It is the result of when the body does not have enough glucose for energy, so instead it burns stored fats and causes a build-up of acids called ketones. A few symptoms of ketosis could include a fruity scent coming from your breath or urine, the urge to pee more frequently, and reduced cravings for foods. How does the diet affect systems within the body? The Atkins diet can help to enhance cognitive performance, and possibly lower the risk of heart disease factors in some cases.
