1. The Atkins diet is a well-known low carb diet created by cardiologist, Dr. Atkins. The goal is to lose weight and keep it off by limiting carbohydrates and sugar intake so the body uses fat as a fuel source instead. The Atkins diet is not recommended for people with high blood pressure or high cholesterol because it focuses on protein and animal fats. Processed foods, whole grains, and dairy are not allowed. There are four phases to the diet with a two week induction, introducing more foods in phase two, reaching your goal weight in phase three, and maintaining it for however long needed in phase four. There are no extra costs aside from shopping for groceries for your balanced meals. One of the main advantages is your appetite goes down
“The Atkins Diet” has many foods that are prohibited. Since the diet restricts almost all
It is important to manage the carbohydrate intake week-to-week (Atkins par. 7). The third and fourth phases of the Atkins diet are for maintenance phases. Dieters should avoid any foods that could possibly cause weight gain, and continue to watch the intake of carbohydrates. The intake of carbohydrates may be increased during this phase but still must be managed (Atkins par. 8). The Atkins diet has had some controversies and some successes as well. This diet is a high-fat diet and the government health agencies only recommend thirty percent of fat in our diets. The Atkins diet requires the dieter to consume much more fat than that, easily (Atkins par. 9). A success that the Atkins dieters have experienced is not only weight loss, but an improvement in health as well (Atkins par. 10). Although this diet has been very time consuming for dieters, it has had wondrous outcomes.

3. What is “metabolism”? What does human metabolism have to do with energy balance and body weight? Answer: metabolism- the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life. Food is measured in calories which the body processes as energy. Additional calories must be burned through exercise or physical activity or it will be stored as fat.
main functions - primary energy source, fat and protein metabolism, energy reserves in stored glycogen, blood glucose fuels brain and CNS
In comparison with my DRIs, my intake of kcalories from carbohydrates, protein, and fat are all within or below the recommended ranges. When I compared my Macronutrient Distribution to my DRI, I realized that I was very close to recommended amount of fat intake. One thing that I could improve on is my protein consumption. My carbohydrate intake is also something I can improve on being that it was below the daily-recommended intake. Looking at my Energy Balance report and comparing the calories that I consumed versus my energy expenditure I can interpret that I did not burn any of the calories that I consumed. Over the summer my goal was to do at least an hour of cardio daily. Since the semester has started I have fallen off. Therefore, I am creating a plan in which I will incorporate cardio into
Two friends of yours, Janine and Mitchell, join you at lunch. During your conversation, Janine comments on Mitchell’s choice of food: a small bowl of cottage cheese, a chicken salad with vinegar and oil dressing, and a glass of ice water.
The Zone and Atkins diets aim to achieve lower levels of insulin in the bloodstream. The Zone diet reduces carbohydrates by structuring calorie intake to a 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, 30% fat ratio. The ratio decreases the amount of carbohydrates consumed, inturn lowering overall insulin levels. The Atkins diet also lowers insulin levels by lowering the quantity of carbohydrates ingested. This four phase diet begins with extreme limitation and gradually allows small amounts of carbohydrates. Though these diets implement different approaches they both reduce the insulin levels in the bloodstream.
Individual’s diets are influenced by various circumstances which means everyone’s diet is unique to them. I live in student housing at IUSB so I provide my own food the majority of the time. I keep the apartment well stocked, so food is always available. I usually eat lunch on campus at the Grill or Sub Connection, where food is also in abundance. The food I eat on campus does not cost me anything since I use the money put on my crimson card by the school. I receive $300 dollars a semester on my card since I live in housing. I do not spend a large amount of money on the food that I buy myself to stock the apartment. It probably adds up to around $50 dollars a month. I provide my own meals most days. When I go home, my parents always make dinner.
The three-day diet analysis was interesting. There were many positive attributes to it and definitely negative ones. Over the course of the three days, which were Friday, Saturday and Sunday: and figured this would give a good depiction of what I was consuming on a regular basis. In some places I was consuming more than I should be and in some I was consuming less than I should be. There were also those places were I was getting just the right amount. It is so interesting to me to be able to find out what I am consuming and how I am consuming it. Being an active male, it was most interesting of what I ate, what my average of the three days were, and the plan on how I would correct the way I eat to make it a more healthier lifestyle.
In the Atkins Diet you will be cutting out most carbs and eating low-carb. There are about 4 phases to the diet. Phase 1- cutting out almost all carbs and eating mostly vegetables for any carbs you would get that day. While cutting out carbs, you will be eating for protein. Phase 2- You are still eating the vegetables, you will start adding berries and nuts. Phase 3- Adding more foods to your diet. Adding more carbs back. Phase 4- Maintaining your weight and continuing to eat healthy.
Throughout my experience using Pearson’s my diet analysis program I learned that my diet plays a very significant role in my life. Keeping track of my diet was completely essential, which I didn’t realize until I started using the diet tracker. My diet is very important to me which is why I wanted my analysis to be as accurate as possible, due to this I chose days that I’d be maintaining physical activity as well as eating healthy. I chose weekdays (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) because I knew my analysis would be more precise as opposed to tracking my diet on the weekend, where I knew I’d be lying in bed all day. During the weekdays, my dietary habits are more constant because I’m keeping the same routine throughout the week. During the three-day
Following a low carb diet can be a real challenge some days. For example, I love to go to the movies, but the popcorn is so tempting because I love that as well. Since I only allow myself one cheat meal a week, the idea of using that cheat on popcorn usually isn't at the top of my list. Having some low carb snacks with me can help.
First, let’s look at some of the background information of low-carb diets. Also, we will look at a couple different diets and what their different phases are. A low-carb diet is one that restricts the intake of carbohydrates for the purpose of losing weight. Foods high in carbs, like sugar, bread, and pasta, are often replaced with foods containing a higher percentage of fats and protein, such as meat, fish, and eggs. Other foods low in carbs, which include some vegetables and fruits, are also acceptable. It is also important to
The majority of low-carb diets are based on the assumption that "obesity and most of its related problems are often (maybe even usually) caused by an insulin problem, not chronic overeating, fat consumption, or refined sugars per se" (http://www.syndicomm.com/lowcarb.html). Therefore, a low-carb diet seeks to curb carbohydrate cravings by lowering overall carbohydrate intake. The philosophy of low-carb diets is that when the cravings have subsided, not only will carbohydrate intake be substantially lower, but food intake in general will decline, resulting in weight loss. There are many low-carb diet plans that are available. Some of the most popular include:
