UNCLASSIFIED//FOUO Unit History (Abbreviated) The 7th Cavalry Regiment was constituted on July 28, 1866 in the Regular Army as the 7th Cavalry. It was organized on September 21, 1866 at Fort Riley, Kansas as part of an expansion of the Regular Army following the demobilization of the wartime volunteer and draft forces. From 1866 through 1871, the Regiment was posted at Ft. Riley and fought in the Indian Wars, notably at the Battle of the Washita in 1868. From 1871 through 1873, Seventh Cavalry companies participated in occupation duties during the Reconstruction period in the South. Albert Sidney Johnson was a Troop Commander in this battle. Johnston was born in Kentucky and obtained his education at West Point. He graduated in 1826. Johnston's first taste of active service came in 1832 during the Black Hawk Indian War. He resigned his commission afterwards only to return to active duty in 1836. He fought against the United States Indians on the River Neches and served in the Mexican War with Major General Zachary Taylor. Taylor made Johnston a paymaster during Taylor's presidency. He continued his rise in the ranks by becoming a colonel in the 2nd Calvary, a brevet brigadier general commanding the Utah military district and in 1861 the commander of the Pacific Coast.
During the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the 2nd Infantry was ordered to cover the retreat from Strasburg, Virginia in the battle at Front Royal on May 23, 1862. In this engagement Shaw received a minor wound and was recognized by his men for exhibiting courage and a cool composure during the fight. But the 2nd Infantry would not experience their real baptism of fire until the Northern Virginia Campaign at the Cedar Mountain wheatfield, August 9, 1862. The regiment suffered terrible losses and would be tested again on September 17 at the Battle of Antietam, considered the bloodiest single day in the war. Shaw, now a captain in the unit, received a minor wound but felt the excitement of the battle as never before. However, after experiencing the horrors of this event, he wished more than ever that the war would end. Shaw was offered a deal to take command of a new All-Black Regiment. A cavalry commander in the United States Army, Custer fought in both the Indian Wars as well as the Civil War. He was born and brought up in Ohio and Michigan and West Point admitted in 1858. During the Civil War he gained a reputation that was strong because of whom he associated with. The Battle of Bull Run was his first major involvement. He had a temporary promotion to major general but returned to captain at the end of the war. After the Civil Wars, he left for the west and the Indian Wars. He led the 7th Cavalry in the battle of Washita River. Later, in 1873, he was sent to the Dakota Territory to help protect a railroad survey crew from attacks by the Lakota Indians.
Governor Isham Harris of Tennessee was pivotal in the foundation of the Army of Tennessee. In early 1861 Harris moved Tennessee away from the Union, and established the command structure for the Provisional Army of Tennessee. The Provisional Army was very well organized, and became the foundation of the Army of Tennessee. When it was transferred to Confederate command, officially July 31, 1861, it contained “24 regiments, 10 artillery batteries, an Engineer Corps, Quartermaster and Ordnance departments and an Ordnance Bureau” .
