Growing up, college has always been drilled into my head as not only an option but rather a requirement that must be fulfilled in order to achieve a sufficient lifestyle, or even better, a successful life filled with many accomplishments. As I grew up, the idea of attending college grew on me as I worked hard in my classes, striving for As but knowing that it was okay to make mistakes sometimes. Attending a college preparatory middle school made my dream of attending college a most viable option. As I learned more about the hundreds of colleges around the world, many caught my attention, but I knew that I would have to set the bar high for myself in a world full of colleges dominated by predominantly white scholars and low expectations for students of color.
Learning about Historically Black Colleges and Universities lead me to a path that was not quite

Going on this trip would give me the chance to learn about the complicated college process and how to get through it. It would also allow me to travel around parts of the south, viewing and learning about the schools that I might not get the chance to explore thus disabling me to even apply when they could process what I am looking for in a college. Also, by attending this trip in the spring, I will be able to start picking out what I want in a college as I will be applying for colleges in the fall. The HBCUs visited will open up a perspective that I have not used in a while, as I am faced with people who may appear like me, but come from all walks of life. Lastly, on this trip I will get the chance to network and create friendships with fellow travelers. The opportunities that this trip will provide me with are ones that will help me with future planning and ones I will cherish
Going to a Historically Black College is important for me to attend because I want to carry on a legacy. A HBCU is already inexpensive itself. If I go to a HBCU, my future children could have more opportunities like scholarships and have a better higher
With America growing at the rate it is, it is very important to grow with it. College is the best way to prepare someone to be out in the workforce and survive. Going to college is not essential for success, but it will give someone the extra skills that will help them in their career and in life. College helps people get a good job, prepares them for adult life, and will help them make more money.
Today, African American students are under-represented in college and universities, and the reason is the ongoing disenfranchisement of African American students. Our education system needs be more responsive and needs to pay more attention to the college preparation for these students. People of color historically have been misrepresented, exploited, silenced, and taken for granted in education research (Dillard, 2000; Stanfield, 1995), (H. Richard Milner IV, 2008).
Before applying to college, there is this understanding for all applicants that regardless of where you go and what you major in, the next four years of your life will remarkably change you. Constantly, reminded that the four years spent in high school won’t compare to the experiences found in college, you prepare yourself for that transition. From the classes to the teachers, college in general has a different feel and rhythm. The beauty of college is that it allows for choice. Each student has the power to decide how much they want to invest in their education. College does not contain the constraints of mandatory attendance or study hours required to excel. This is what makes college unique and transformative. It gives you the power to decide
Another major predicament that plays a large role in the amount of African Americans that do not receive a higher education is once they get to college, they do not have a typical or enjoyable experience once there. In today’s society, it is hard to imagine that there is still racism and segregation in schools and colleges today but the reality is, it still does very much exist. This is especially true when black students attend predominantly white universities. Even though most colleges promote themselves by talking about how diverse their
Attending UPenn would be a monumental step in shaping my future and solidifying the goals I have set for myself. Becoming a veterinarian is a dream of mine and I believe attending UPenn would erase any of my doubts of becoming one or it will guide me to new career path in life. Its flexible and broad curriculum, welcoming and diverse social community, and intellectually and academically challenging classes will all benefit me into becoming an educated and open minded adult.
College can be very helpful in more ways than just giving people more head knowledge. I do not disagree that people will benefit from learning a trade skill. In my personal opinion I think we should teach the basics of some trade skills in high school, and let the student decide if a college education is something they want to pursue. After coming to a college I do see that people should come even if it is for two years. The debt is always in issue when coming to school, but there are plans you can make to pay them off. Coming to college can do a lot to help anyone, but for the students that are coming right out of high school, college can be a safe place for them to experience the real world. In some cases it can give them some much needed
At the moment allot of people not only in the united states but in the world are indecisive about going to college. Some of them are scared of the hardwork and dedication that they would have to commit to but the money that they would have to pay. There are alot of people that didn't go to college and are very successful. Although teachers make it seem like its a requirement to go to college, it’s not, it’s the students decision. It is not gonna help the teachers out when people go to college.
Coming to college has shown me information and knowledge I never thought I was capable of learning and it will be knowledge I will use for the rest of my life. I came to college last year for my own personal growth and to expand my horizons. I thought about what I wanted to do after high school and continuing my education was number one on my list. I’m here simply to better my future, expand my knowledge, increase my potential, and learn more about myself. I want to make my family and myself proud by completing college and getting a degree. Bettering my future and making sure I have the information to be able to do my future career is my top priority because it’s the only thing I have continually been working for since the 9th grade. Expanding my knowledge in these courses that will soon get me to the school I need to be at is a compelling reason for me to stay motivated enough to wake up in the morning and push myself to come to school. I hope to increase my potential and develop into
Coming to college is a monumental thing for me and having the opportunity to go to the College of Design is equally as big and frightening. I am excited and ready to start the school year and to learn all that I can during my studio classes but I am worried about the time commitment it entails. I see this as a challenge though. A challenge I’m willing to go through. I would say this is my biggest concern about the College of Design but not my only one. I have seen examples of older student’s work and seen how they have improved tremendously and although that fills me with awe and ease, I still feel a sense of worry because it takes me a small amount of time to pick up new methods of learning.
College is a privilege that is now accessible to many people. It has not always been this way though. Lack of money, being deprived of representation, or racism hindered one’s chances in to getting into higher education, especially a minority’s chance. In order to raise against the barriers, President John F. Kennedy created the affirmative action program to provide equal opportunities for everyone, whether in education or in the workforce. Even if this was a program created in the 1960’s, problems continue to present itself as shown through the many court cases, such as Brown vs. Board of Education, Fisher vs. University of Texas, Grutter vs. Bollinger et al, and Hopwood vs. State of Texas. Thus, racial inequality and affirmative action
The main reasons why I chose to go to college was, get better education for myself, be a role model for my children and to earn my degree to get a high paying job.
College is awesome in many different ways. When you are in college, you have the independence and freedom to do anything that you would like to do. Another good thing about college is the variety of courses that different colleges offer, and also chance to focus on what you really want to do as a career. Although all colleges are different, they all have to same goal. To help and to see students become successful.
Going to college and having an education is the must impotent thing I can do to succeed in life. One, of my reason for going to college, is the better my life. By going to college expand my knowledge and used that has a tool to do better in my future. The second reason, why I'm going to college is because I want to have more in life. In my experience no having a good education you have to work so hard to get what you want. By going to college, I'm making a big sacrifice but I know
