Introduction: Working with families, social services workers may see families with a variety of problems. They help families deal with poverty, abuse, and health care concerns or problems. There are variety jobs under the social service category. Some workers might help people find homes, or temporary shelters, while others help families deal with the effects of abuse such as sexual and physical. Other workers might deal with families that are being affected by a health disorder such as mental illness. Mental illness affects people of all ages. One of the most common mental illnesses that is found in teens and greatly impact their development and families is Major Depression. Depression: One of the most common mental disorders in the U.S. is Major Depression. Depression is not simply the act of being sad or angry, Depression is disorder that affects how the brain controls emotions. Depression is considered an episodic illness, sometimes a person can improve without any help, and sometimes it can become a recurring problem. A depression episode usually can last two weeks or more. It can affect a way the person thinks, personal interactions, feels, and how they see the world as a whole. Depression effects seven percent of the population, majority of them women. A person usually experiences their first episode of depression in their adolescent and young adulthood years. According to the National Alliance for Mental illness eight percent of teens may experience a depressive episode in a given year. Twenty percent experience depression during their teen years. Females are more likely than boys to be diagnosed with depression. Numbers show up to eighty percent of teens with go untreated. Teens in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community are at a higher risk or experiencing depression due to their sexual identity. There are many different type of social workers and what they do. Child and Family social workers protect vulnerable children and support families in need of assistance. Assess client’s needs, strengths, and support network to determine their goals. Develop plans to improve their client’s well-being. Help clients adjust to changes and challenges in their lives, such as divorce, illness or unemployment. Research and refer clients to community resource, such child care, heath care and food stamps. Help clients work with government agencies to apply for and receive benefits such as medicare. Respond to crisis situations such as child abuse. Advocate for and help clients get resource that would improve their well-being. Follow up with clients to ensure that their situations have improved.

People with major depression experience symptoms such as a change of appetite, restlessness sleep, decreased energy, feeling of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, and/or suicidal thoughts. A major depressive episode can lasts for about 2 weeks or more. A major depressive episode can be caused by stress, social anxiety, or other reasons. People with a milder depression are able to function and seem normal (DSM-IV-TR). A major depressive disorder affects about 14.8 million adults in America with 6.7 million at age 18 and older in the United States population. A depressive disorder can develop in any age and more likely to occur more often in women than in men and any person who is going through a hard time can develop depression. A treatment for individuals with depression is medication, psychotherapy, or attending social groups, 80 percent of the people who follow up with these treatments begin to show improvement with in four to six weeks. Depression is one of the leading causes of death in the world (Moreh and O’Lawrence 3). Approximately 121 million people around the world are affected by depression symptoms (Moreh and O’Lawrence 2). Depression is different than normal sadness that everyone experiences in their lives. Depression is “a common psychological disorder…..that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest” (Moreh and O’Lawrence 2). Depression is often thought of as an issue that only affects adults, but at any given time 10 to 15 percent of teens and young adults are depressed (Moreh and O’Lawrence 2).

Social work is a very significant career. Social worker’s responsibility is to help children and families going through physical and/or emotional challenging situations. Social worker helps children out of unfit living conditions in hope to better the child’s future. There are various types of social work. There is mental health, child and family, school, community, medical social work. There are advantages and disadvantage to life as a social worker. An example of an advantage is they touch the most vulnerable people in their community. Social workers also find ways to help families if they have an illness and cannot take care of the child or children they have. They are also authorized to put children in a foster home, if caretaker have a problem with drugs or alcohol and are unfit to care for the child or children. The social worker gets to decide if the home is a safe environment for the child to grow.

Depression a word we’re familiar with especially when it comes to adults, we know adults get depress and we understand the reasons, with the high demands in life it’s not uncommon to get lost in the shuffle. Depression in adult is something we have known for many years, but what has surprised many of us is that adolescents also get depressed. I myself still don’t fully understand the reasons why or how this happens. I see it very often adolescent coming in to the ER because they are depressed and want to hurt themselves, and each and every single time I’m shock. What could be so bad in their lives that would make them think they have no way out? This is the reason why I choice this topic, I want to learn more of how this disease affects so many children and teens and what we can do to stop it.

Today’s teenagers are faced with the ever changing world around them and the biological changes of their bodies. Many teens are also faced with depression. Approximately half of teenagers with untreated depression may attempt suicide, which remains the third leading cause of death in this age group. (Bostic). This depression affects their school, family lives, and robs them of their self image. Depression affects many teens and often goes by unnoticed and untreated.
