The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” had many characters with a variety of traits. Atticus was the good, Tom Robinson was the transitioning, and lastly Bob Ewell was the evil to this book. Atticus showed his respect towards others even if they were young. To Jem and Scout he talked to them as if they were his peers “I'm afraid our activities would be received with considerable disapprobation by the more learned authorities." He said this to Scout and the vocabulary he used with them were sophisticated out of respect. Now Tom Robinson being the transitional character he was in trial yet he still was a good man. Bob Ewell accused him of raping his daughter saying “I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin on my Mayella!” (231). but Tom never did such a thing and only helped he with …show more content…
This comes from chapter ten when Atticus was going to shoot the dog because it was was acting crazy. He said to Jem “I’d rather you shoot tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (119). This is talking about how these birds don’t do anything but sing so they won’t attack you and you shouldn’t attack them, they are harmless. Another part was when Tom Robinson was on stand talking about his arm and how he was disabled in his right arm so he couldn’t be much harm to other. But good ol Bob Ewell tried accusing him for raping his daughter “Robinson, you’re pretty good at busting up chifarobes and kindling with one hand” (263). This implying he only has on hand able to use. Then Tom was getting moved somewhere else but tried to run and while doing that someone took shots at him. Robinson never did nothing but try to run so they should’ve tried to injure him but the officers shot him seventeen times, Killing him right their. This is what I think the theme of the novel
Tom Robinson is a well respected, kind black guy who was defended by Atticus Finch against the charge that he raped Mayella Ewell. Atticus knew that Tom would never stand a chance to win the case because of the dark skin tone he had, but atticus also knows that Tom was innocent and that he must defend him.
Atticus as a lot of respect for everyone and this became evident when he went to the Robinson’s house to inform Helen of the death of Tom. On page 321 it says, “A little girl came to the cabin door and stood looking at Atticus. Dill said her hair was a wad of tiny stiff pigtails, each ending in a bright bow. She grinned from ear to ear and walked toward our father, but she was too small to navigate the steps. Dill said Atticus went to her, took off his hat, and offered her his finger. She grabbed it and he eased her down the steps. Then he gave her to Calpurnia.” This quote portrays Atticus as warm, friendly character that has a degree of courtesy to everyone no matter how big or small, black or white, how old or how young. Likewise, on Scout’s
Chapter 22 Even though Atticus did not wish to bring his children to the court, he defends Jem’s right to evaluate what is happening and happened. Why did Atticus let his children watch? “We've made it this way for them, they might as well learn to cope with it... It's just as much Maycomb County as missionary teas” (pg. 212). Atticus says this because Jem is growing up and has a right to learn and know about how Maycomb life really is.
The title “To Kill A Mockingbird” is taken from a quote in the book, where Atticus says "Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (lee Later, Miss Maudie Atkinson states that "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy." (p.177). This shows that mocking birds are innocent, and that is why Atticus strongly forbids his children to kill them. To Kill a Mockingbird novels theme is how prejudice affects the town of maycomb, alabama. Also, the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. All the birds do is sing for you and give you pleasure in what is natural and enjoyment to them (singing for you). Theydont harm,. They are fragile, loveable, weak, and helpless birds. In the
Respect is a very strong word that is very key to being a good person in life. In this quote, Atticus comes down to a table full of food and was in awe, “Atticus’s eyes filled with tears. He did not speak for a moment. ‘Tell them I’m very grateful,’ he said ‘Tell them-tell them they must never do this again. Times are too hard…’” (Lee 286). This quote explains how Atticus’s is so grateful for what he gets. He comes downstairs the morning after the trial, to a whole table filled with food. This shows how respectful Atticus has been because since he represented Tom Robinson in court, people want to repay him. Atticus is one of the all-around nicest person, I have ever read
Throughout the novel, Atticus displays that he is very well-mannered and civil. Atticus does his best to display politeness and respect to all, regardless of whom they are. He is very understanding, and tries to pass this skill onto his children. “‘You never really understand a person until you consider
Tom Robinson is an interesting character. He could be viewed differently from certain points of view. From the Bob Ewell views him as an animal and treats him terribly. Ewell believes that since Tom is a black man, he is worth less than himself, a white man. He says Tom is a rapist and a bad person. Ewell is disrespectful towards Tom. He threatens the accused. He treats him in accordance with the Jim Crow laws. From his own and Atticus’s point of view, Tom is a completely different person. Tom is kind to people. He takes time out of his day to help Mayella. He does not take money for his help either. There are people who claim Tom is a good family man as well. In court, Tom is quiet. He is respectful to everyone. He speaks of everyone as an
Maycomb County Alabama is a small town with small town folks. Everyone knew everything about everyone and that's the way it was. Atticus is the father of two children, Jem and Scout and also a lawyer in the town. Atticus said one day, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it," (Lee 31).
Meaning that since mockingbirds do nothing to harm our society, we should do the same in return. “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people’s gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”(pg 90). These quotes prove to the reader that a mockingbird is only full of purity and therefore they must be left alone.
Everyone respected Atticus’ wisdom, intelligence, and behavior. One can see this happen when Atticus teaches Jem and Scout about the Cunninghams and the Ewells. Atticus teaches his children about tolerance over people who are in a lower status. Also when Bob Ewells shouted
Introduction: Recidivism or, habitual relapses into crime, has time and time again proven to be an issue among delinquents, which thereby increases the overall juvenile prison population. This issue has become more prevalent than what we realize. Unless a unit for measuring a juvenile’s risk of recidivism is enacted and used to determine a system to promote effective prevention, than the juvenile prison population will continue to increase. Our court system should not only focus on punishing the said juvenile but also enforce a program or policy that will allow for prevention of recidivism. So the question remains, how can recidivism in the juvenile prison population be prevented so that it is no longer the central cause for increased
Atticus teaches scout and Jem self respect by setting examples for them. When Atticus decides to take the Tom Robinson case he teaches his kids self respect. After asked why he took the case he said that Atticus has been asked to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. It is a case he cannot hope to win, but he tells Scout that he must argue it to uphold his sense of justice and self-respect. He also shows scout and jem self respect by not showing off his God given gift. He taught Jem and Scout to have thick skin. He made sure to have them not allow someone to get under their skin. An example of a moment where Jem or Scout have to have a lot of patience for someone is when was throwing around the N word, tho she retaliated she didn't pay it that much attention. Another example is again when Atticus took the Tom Robinson case.
Tom Robinson is a black man in To Kill a Mockingbird. He was accused of rape by Mayella and Bob Ewell. As he goes through trial he shows a lot of his values and traits. Tom Robinson is selfless and kind-hearted. He is selfless because he is willing to tasks and small jobs for Mayella even though he has a family at home.
About 250 million years ago, Pangæa the supercontinent was split up and eventually settled on the current continental configuration. As civilization flourished, the inhabitants developed their own language and culture on each continent. However, trading and getting along with the neighboring communities forced many groups to learn more than their mother tongue. This pragmatic use of multilingualism is especially evident in Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the benefits of mastering more than one language has influenced other continents such as Europe to incorporate multilingualism into its society. Consequently, in the world’s population, multilingual speakers outnumber monolingual spealers.
