1) How does Atticus Finch represent the ideas expressed by President Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address? Why?
Atticus Finch represents the ideas expressed by President Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address because Atticus believes that we should follow and respect the constitution. Atticus Finch represents these ideas because he follows the Constitution, and respects it by honoring the 6th and 14th amendments. Atticus Finch honored the 14th amendment because the 14th amendment states that people are guaranteed equal protection under the law, which means that everyone is guaranteed their bill of rights. He followed this by honoring the 6th amendment in the bill of rights, which states that the accused have the right to a speedy and public trial, witnesses for and against them, a lawyer, an impartial jury, and they are informed of their …show more content…

Sheriff Tate’s actions did not represent this because when Atticus and Sheriff Tate were talking on the porch after Bob Ewell had tried to kill Scout and Jem, Sheriff Tate knew that Boo was the one who killed Bob because he was trying to protect the children, but insisted on telling everyone that Bob fell on his knife, instead of telling the truth to the people of Maycomb County. This can be shown here: "I may not be much, Mr. Finch, but I'm still sheriff of Maycomb County and Bob Ewell fell on his knife. Good night, sir." (Lee 62-63) Because Sheriff Tate was breaking the law by not telling the people of Maycomb County the truth, and the idea that was expressed in the Gettysburg address was that we should follow the constitution and the law, Sheriff Tate’s actions did not represent the ideas expressed by President Lincoln in the Gettysburg
