As one of the most controversial novels and top banned school books, To Kill a Mockingbird has it’s uniqueness. In the story, one of the most important character is Atticus Finch. He is a white lawyer of the fictional Maycomb County and the father of 2 children, Scout and Jem. Although the Maycomb society is always portrayed as peaceful and reasonable , the reality underneath their skin is a “disease” that Atticus Finch says most of the people in Maycomb have. “Reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up.” It is caused by invisible “standards” that basically everyone follows. You do not have to follow these standards however, if you choose to do so then your reputation will be ruined. One of the society’s “standards” is to not help a black person. Atticus is a character that lives by his own standards and believes that you always have to do the right thing no matter what happens. He always had an excellent reputation in the society until he decided to defend Tom Robinson, an innocent black man that is accused of raping a white woman. He was chosen to defend Tom Robinson so he could’ve simply chose follow the society’s standards by giving zero effort in defending Tom however, what makes Atticus Finch such a great character is how …show more content…
Atticus knows how racist the group of men are and the trouble he will get into however, he continues to do what he believes is right. He goes to the jailhouse and blocks the group of men from the entrance. The group of men had guns so it was possible that the Atticus would be badly hurt. If Scout and Jem didn’t arrive at the jailhouse, terrible things would’ve happened. Atticus went to the jailhouse without the knowledge of Jem and Scout following. This shows his courage, how much he is willing to risk in order to do what he believes is

Atticus Finch is a father and lawyer who lives in Maycomb County with two children and a worker in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus is a man of integrity and wants to help people no matter who they are. This is why he decides to help a black man in a rape case against a white women. It makes sense for Atticus to take a stand for Tom Robinson because he is a man of integrity.
Atticus Finch, the father of Scout and Jem and a lawyer in Maycomb, is a compelling character in To Kill a Mockingbird. He catches the eye of many readers because of his honesty, courage, and his ability to be a outstanding father. We witness these qualities when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, helps his children grow, and the way he conducts himself with the angry white folks of Maycomb, AL. Atticus Finch is one of the main characters in this book portraying a role of a lawyer defending a black man, in a small-town with a majority of white supremacists. This essay will provide examples of the previous three traits to display how Atticus is a compelling character.
Atticus did the right thing by standing up for Tom, because he was an innocent man and he shouldn’t be imprisoned for what he didn’t do. Atticus knew and believed this and he did whatever he could to save Tom Robinson “ “Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson…” “(Lee, CH.25). This shows us that Atticus truly wanted to save Tom and he knew that Tom was an innocent man. If Atticus wouldn’t have stood up for Tom the chances are no one else would and Tom would never have a chance of freedom. Atticus also knew that Tom was innocent when Tom began to explain that he was sorry for Mayella “ “felt right sorry for her” “(Lee, CH. ?). This shows that Tom was truly innocent because if he wasn’t a black man would never say that they felt sorry for a white women. This helped Atticus understand that he was innocent, and made it the right thing to do when standing up for him. Atticus also knew Tom as a friend, they were always kind to each other and never treated the each other any different from the other. Atticus knew that Tom was innocent and when guarding Tom’s cell at the jail Atticus stood by him the entire night. “ “Mr. Finch? “A soft husky voice came from the darkness above: “They gone?” Atticus stepped back and looked up. They’ve gone,” he said. “Get some sleep, Tom. They won’t bother you any more.” “ (CH. 15). This shows that Atticus truly cares for Tom and if Atticus
Atticus Finch is a man of high moral standing. Throughout the book Atticus is threatened, mocked, and verbally abused, yet he doesn't give the reactions that you would expect from a “Southern man” from Alabama. At one point his life was even threatened by a man named Bob Ewell. Mr. Ewell spat in his face and told him that he would”get” Atticus. Instead of Atticus getting angry and retaliating, he just wipes off his face and walks away, Another time Atticus show good morals is when he tond Calpurnia to tell the black community not to bring him anything else and that times were too tough. This shows he wasn’t representing Tom Robinson for respect or attention, rather he was doing it
In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch violates the rules of conduct in his society. Mr. Finch goes against the grain of his society when agreeing to defend a black man named Tom Robinson at a trial. Finch resists the pressure to follow conventional rules in his society by believing a black man over a white woman in the trial. Additionally, he resists the pressure to conform his children to the expectations that society has due to their gender. Furthermore, Finch’s unique parenting style raises many questions and concerns from the other adults in Maycomb, Alabama, but he does not change his way of raising his kids.
Atticus is an important character throughout the novel, he has a large influence of the community of Maycomb County that he is strongly valued in. He is revealed to us through his words and actions as a courageous and unprejudiced man with good values and morals. At the beginning of the novel Atticus Finch takes Tom Robinson’s court case, Tom Robinson is a black member of the Maycomb town who has been accused of rape of Mayella Ewell. In the 1930’s this was a very controversial case for Atticus to be supporting as throughout the community and the Unites States there was a problem of racial inequality. Blacks were not seen to have equal rights as whites and were seen as the lower class and “trash”. Atticus says that “When it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins”. This shows that although he is exposing himself and his family to the anger of the white community, he would rather stand by his moral values than join the rallying community of racially
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view,” (33). Perspective is paramount to Atticus, and also for cohesion of society and keeping innocence untainted by sin. Unfortunately, not everyone in Maycomb County is as receptive as Atticus Finch, and he faces some challenges because of it. He is almost murdered in front of the county jail for guarding Tom Robinson and keeping him safe from the hateful, ignorant mob determined to lynch him. Beyond that, he is judged and looked down upon by the townsfolk because of their own prejudice against black people and anyone who would dare to defend one.
Set during the early 1930s, in rural Alabama, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird covers too many deep and significant subjects to count–even today, though this work was published in 1960, many of these topics still pose as real issues in our world. Strung and sewn through each of these portrayals of injustice is Atticus Finch, the widowered father of Jem and Scout Finch, and a lawyer of the fictional Maycomb County. Atticus parents his children using non-disciplinary ways, an idea that irked many townsfolk, even bringing them to think of him as “much worse off without his wife”. Although the townspeople of Maycomb are made uncomfortable by the way Atticus’ parenting style, forbearing character, and liberal views challenge their way of life,
and Mahatma Gandhi. This is because Atticus was against racism, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela were, and this is shown when he defends Tom Robinson in the trial, despite expecting to lose because Tom would have been charged as guilty since he was black. He also demonstrates being against racism when he tells Scout that repeating the derogatory name people in Maycomb County called the Negros was wrong and didn’t deny to be the derogatory name people called him before the trial took place and stated that he loves everyone. Like other great people, Atticus was brave enough to stand up for what was right and face the consequences. While great people faced assassination and threats to their families’ safety, Atticus faced threats from Bob Ewell and his attack on Scout and Jem.
In Maycomb County, the residents live in a world of racism and injustice, so much so that even young children are affected by the results. Through standing with Atticus and his decisions, Scout undergoes constant indirect racism when her cousin says, “I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I’m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family-” (Lee, pg. 94). Even with family, Scout begins to understand that not everyone shares her close family’s views, and that she may even be discriminated against for protecting her and her father’s beliefs. To add, Atticus always stands his ground, though the things and the people he defends cannot always win, such as when his only evidence is “a black man’s word against the Ewells’” (Lee, pg. 100 ). Atticus can believe in someone regardless of their skin color, yet the majority of his town is filled with racists who won’t believe him, even with
