A hero is someone who does right. In Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird. the characters demonstrate heroic qualities. Atticus Finch, to be exact. Nellie Harper Lee is the author of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. The novel immediately won a Pulitzer Prize. The wonderful novel was inspired by the racist attitudes she observed as a child in Monroeville, Alabama. Harper Lee is currently alive and thriving at the ae of 89. Some say her book is based on education. Others say the purpose is to address racial issues, and judging people before you get to know them. Throughout the book, Scout has to learn not to judge. Atticus has integrity, because being judged would usually cause a person to give up. He even has a black maid! Cooking with grace, Calpurnia has to block out all of the people judging her. Atticus is a wise man, committed to justice and equality, and his parenting style is based on fostering these virtues in his children—he even encourages Jem and Scout to call him “Atticus” so that they can interact on terms as equal as possible. Throughout the novel, Atticus works to develop Scout’s and Jem’s respective consciences, through both teaching, as when he tells Scout to put herself in a person’s shoes before she judges them.
Atticus Finch is a father and lawyer who lives in Maycomb County with two children and a worker in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus is a man of integrity and wants to help people no matter who they are. This is why he decides to help a black man in a rape case against a white women. It makes sense for Atticus to take a stand for Tom Robinson because he is a man of integrity.
Another time Atticus exemplifies justice is when he explains to his kids why he is defending Tom Robinson. Atticus talks about how he is not supposed to defend Tom given social standards, but he does anyway because he believes in equality. Atticus says, “The main one is, if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 86). Atticus then explains that he will not win, but he will try anyway. He says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 87).
Atticus knows Tom is innocent and wants to defend him, since no one else wants to. Like he said to his son Jem Q2“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. ”(pg.119)What he means by that is that if you know someone hasn't done anything wrong and you do something wrong to them, it's a sin. He shows courage by helping an african american in a court case accused of raping a white woman with the only evidence to help is Tom Robinson's word for it.
Moreover, every other character in the story can be said to have courage, especially Atticus. The book revolves around Atticus and how he has no fear to defend a black man. Atticus is a lawyer that always had justice and never accepts injustice. He defends a black man named “Tom Robinson” who is accused of rapping a white girl whose own father had infact raped. “I’m simply defending a negro his name’s Tom Robinson” “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee,100). These quotes show that Atticus is not afraid and is brave enough to hold his head up in town even if he defended Tom, an inferior in their society. It also shows how well educated and mature he is that he even connects his job to his kids and he always tries to be good to be the best in his kids’ eyes. This one’s mine, I guess.” (Lee, 100-101) Atticus found that he did not need anyone else’s approval about his choices, he was going to make a difference for Maycomb and himself. His hope was to change Maycomb’s beliefs about human rights by maintaining his self-respect. If he lost this self-respect because he decided to conform to unreasonable standards, he would fail himself and his family.

It tells the tale of a young girl named Scout, and her family who live in Alabama in the 1930’s where blacks still do not have equal rights. A black man is on trial for the supposed rape of a young lady, Mayella Ewell, and one courageous lawyer, Atticus Finch, the father of Scout, decides to prove his innocence even though the odds are stacked against him. In the novel courage is defined by a quote that states, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what…” (Lee, 149).

Atticus Finch is a character from chapters 1-7 that demonstrates moral courage. Atticus shows moral courage. Atticus shows moral courage because he is an honest man. He often says to his kids to think of something from the others point of view, before someone judges them. “As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jems skin and walk around in it.” (Page 64 paragraph 1) He always looked for and opportunity to make his children better people. Atticus does not retaliate when Bob Ewell spits in his face, goes to Tom’s cell knowing there would be a mob, and does his best in court to exonerate Tom. Firstly, Atticus does not retaliate when Bob Ewell spits in his face. Atticus says “ ‘...if spitting in my face saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take’ ” (Lee 218). Atticus is being disrespected in one of the worst ways by a man he could destroy, but knows that he was helping a victim of abuse, Mayella, so he does not make things worse by retaliating. Secondly, Atticus knows there is a mob coming, but nevertheless goes to Tom Robinson’s cell to defend him. Atticus knows the possibly dangerous mob is coming, with Scout observing “He seemed to be expecting them” (150). However, Atticus recognizes that he is Tom’s only hope, and utilizes his immense courage to face the mob. Thirdly, Atticus does his best to defend Tom in court. As Scout tells us, “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” (241). Atticus knows from the beginning he has next to no chance to win the trial, but still tries for Tom’s sake, for the other black people in the community, and for the chance he could appeal it and change laws for the good of African Americans. It is rare to find a courageous and sympathetic person who is willing to stand against social injustice. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus represents this rare hero. He is a lawyer and a single parent to his kids Jem and Scout. He understands that society should not be black and white and helps those who are mistreated. Not only does Atticus demonstrate acts of courage and empathy, he is also an excellent role model to his children. Atticus represents the qualities of a true hero by exposing injustice, and through courageous and sympathetic activities, teaching his children moral values.

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents Atticus Finch as a principled lawyer, committed but single father to Scout and Jem, and a law-abiding citizen. Atticus is a respectable gentleman in society and a role model for his children. Throughout the book we see evidence of his honorable intentions, though he doesn’t seem to reap the rewards. He is morally upstanding, even-keeled, and daring. Because of these things, Atticus is a man who deserves great respect and admiration.
